Recordings

  1. Single version, 3'03.
    Produced by Martin Rushent.
Released on 27 September 1978 as a single in the U.K.
Also available on some releases of Go 2.
Andy: “I remember Martin didn't turn up until really late. We were all plugged in, buzzing and ready to go at ten, and he turned up about seven in the evening.”
Andy: “I quite like themes of communication or breakdowns of it (as in ‘No Language in Our Lungs’). I got jilted quite a bit as a teenager and I thought it was because I couldn't speak to girls. I later discovered it wasn't speak they were after. By the way, Son of Sam, who pokes his head up somewhere in the middle of this song, claims his dog talked him into being a murderer.”
  2. Promotional video (using the single version), 3'03.
    Distributed for broadcast in 1978.
Released in 1982 on the Look Look video compilation.
  3. Live version.
Recorded live 20 July 1979 at the Marconi Club, Sydney, for JJJ radio, Australia.
    Engineered by Keith Walker.
Released in October 1979 as a B-side to the Making Plans for Nigel 7" single in Australia.
Andy Partridge - Guitar, Keyboard and Vocals
Colin Moulding - Bass and Vocals
Dave Gregory - Guitar, Keyboards and Vocals
    Terry Chambers - Drums
  4. Live version, 3'18.
Released on BBC Radio 1 Live in Concert.
    Also available on Transistor Blast.
Andy: “Up goes the rocket, down comes a shower of burning ‘Are You Receiving Me?’ sparks. I'd lost my voice by the end, but strangely and satisfyingly, I'd also lost that cold!”
  5. Go 2 out-take.
Recorded at EMI Studios, Abbey Road, London, in August 1978, during sessions for Go 2.
Produced and engineered by John Leckie.
Released on 25 March 2002 on Coat of Many Cupboards in the U.K.
Andy Partridge - Guitar and Vocals
Colin Moulding - Bass and Vocals
Barry Andrews - Keyboards and Vocals
    Terry Chambers - Drums
Andy: “The version that came out as a single was a re-recording made later with Martin Rushent. This earlier attempt didn't quite click somehow, although, as I listen to it and write these notes, it sounds perfectly fine to me. What wasn't right about it in 1978? Working in Abbey Road had obviously rubbed off on us as my guitar solo seems to have more than a tad of George Harrison about it. I loved some of Barry's squelching organ tones. The sound of pulling your wellington boots out of the mud.”
  6. Live video version.
Recorded live 18 November 1979 at Théâtre de l'Empire, Paris, France, for Chorus.
    Produced by Antoine de Caunes.
Released in October 2010 on Sur la scène du Théâtre de l'Empire à Paris - Chorus - 18/11/1979 in France.

Lyrics

Are you receiving me?
You are deceiving me I know, see I know

When we're out walking
Your mouth ain't where it's supposed to do the talking
When we're in kissing
Your lips are missing, are they out on loan to someone else
Are you listening?

I put it in a letter, what could be better?
I put it in a note, one night I wrote
I put it in a telegram, just like the son of Sam
Babe there's something missing
Your TV's just hissing
