Message-ID: <6.2.3.4.2.20051108195543.0275cbb8@mail.comcast.net> Howdy all, Thought you might be interested to know that I heard "Spiral" on the radio today (Nov. 8), on the great KEXP in Seattle. Heard it in the car and it took me a few seconds to realize it wasn't the "usual" XTC spin (Mayor of Simpleton, Dear God, King for a Day, etc.) -- fortunately, I'd downloaded the song just a couple of days ago, so I didn't go off the road in shock hearing an unknown XTC song. It was quite cool to hear it, and regardless of whether they play it again, I highly recommend that you tune in to KEXP (for the most of you not living near Seattle, just go to www.kexp.org to listen on the Internet) on a regular basis! They're essentially the NPR of very cool music (that is, they're listener-supported, so no commercials!). Spiraling out, Dave Gershman

It may be possible that no song by anyone will ever blow my mind like "River of Orchids" did upon first hearing, but I think both these songs are worthy entrants into the XTC catalogue. And honestly, both seem fully realized to me. They feel more like Beeswax than Fuzzy Warbles. You can listen to it again by following this link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/6music_aod.shtml?6music/sequence_mon Fast forward to 17:10 or so (a little earlier if you need to hear Easter Theatre) and you're good to go. Be warned that this week's show will be replaced after next Monday's broadcast (which is probably when this will end up on chalkhills -- drat!), so don't delay.

If you're not in the UK (or indeed if you are) you can listen online at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2, and the shows are archived for a week. Apologies if this is old news, but I've missed a few digests. Jason
------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Nov 2005 22:46:49 -0600 From: "eriC draveS" <zoom98@mindspring.com> Subject: Ha Ha! An Actual XTC Review! Message-ID: <004c01c5e5b1$c32f5b80$0a0110ac@XLZOOM2> THE DOWNLOAD SPIRAL I joined the Chalkhills mailgroup back in... oh, I don't know, started with a 2 or something. Way way after their last official album. Now, of course, there still is no new album yet, but now we have 2 songs LABELED XTC, and I think 'Spiral' and 'Say It' are excellent, so my saying this should count as a review. It was great to hear CM (whose initials also stand for Captain Marvel) in a new composition. I notice he's slowing somewhat, like in other recent ones of his (Boarded Up, In Another Life, Frivolous Tonight), but it's all because we're still accustomed to the incredible energy of "Cross Wires" or other early works of his. This later CM is something to really appreciate if only because he takes the time to get the notes right. The AP work "Spiral" has already been criticized by several parties, but I can listen to it and that's what matters. Remember that we are dealing with a tough group to listen to in the first place, what with style changes every couple of albums and obscurity in songs that takes several listenings to really "get". (Probably be another 1,000 listens before I get "The Dub Experiments", but I digress.) The best criticism I could find was the one about rhymeing "spiral" with "spinal", and "45s" with "45s". Eh, I've heard worse rhymes (remember "umbilical"? How about "cuneiform"?). I suppose this review will be pointless if these songs are put in the new album (a ploy of groups like Stone Temple Pilots), but it hardly matters, because two songs are better than zero right now, and presumably by the time the album comes out we'll have taken a better liking to them. WHEN YOU QUIZ ME I HAVE DIFFICULTY Got 89% in the XTC Trivia game, it really annoyed me on a couple of questions though (not everyone can get the rare stuff!). When the song titles I never heard before were mentioned, I wanted to tear things to bits. (And no, I don't consider "Sargasso Bar" an XTC track.) LIFELESS LIKE THE BURGER ON MY PLATE The local Burger King continues to play "King For a Day", wonder why? Next to that is the local grocery store which continues to play the Billy Joel song that goes, "Anthony works in the grocery store..." BANAL FOR A NOISY DAY Here's a link to some music: http://www.juno.co.uk/products/158490-01.htm It's not important (in fact, it's a pile of excrement droppings, if excrement could further drop anything by itself), but it does appear to be by three people named Andy, Colin and Dave (in that order). With odds of a zillion-to-one (which are probably also the odds of their work being bought). ACROSS THIS BLEU DISQUEHEAP (Non-XTC content starts here): Since I last posted, there's been too much going on with me, including my filling the holes in my music collection (Police, Led Zeppelin, etc.), but most of it is from before 1990 so there's not much new to report. However, I did buy Madness' "The Dangermen Sessions Vol. 1" and really enjoyed it. It's all ska covers, but very nice ones at that. I was hoping for some new material (six years is a long time, but it seems short because their last hiatus was fourteen years!), however there's so much music out there it hardly matters. I could also go on about Duran Duran's "Astronaut", Les Claypool's "Purple Onion", Jet's "Get Born" and other recently discovered works, but why bother? By now they've either been discussed to death or dismissed to an equal extinguishment. DE DO DO DO, DE DA DOODAH Fans of the Bonzo Dog Doodah Band may with to purchase the DVD "Do Not Adjust Your Set", one of the two precursors to Monty Python, because the band appear in every episode and usually sing something (isn't that what bands are for?). They look quite creative and interesting. Sometimes they even get in on the act. Not being a fan, I was still quite amused by their silliness and costumery. Also interesting is the mock serial at the end, titled "Captain Fantastic". Isn't that supposed to be by Elton John? ---- Until 2006 (barring a December release), eriC "The wind just blew it off his head and sent it spinning, straight to nowhere."

Message-ID: <OF2AC24554.79240A8E-ON852570B5.005270A2@jpmchase.com> Folks: I guess I should approach this with kid gloves, but I'm a little puzzled here since I just ordered my APPLE BOX from the Idea website, but I'm reading the most recent Not Lame update which also happens to be selling a great tribute to the DB's and Nick Low as well, and I notice this: XTC - Apple Box (4 CD's) Order Today -- $35.00 UK only, 4 CD box from XTC!! This box set contains the complete Apple Works recordings including the demos of Apple Venus and Wasp Star which gives a fascinating insight into XTC's recorded works. Each disc is packaged with new artwork in a cardboard wallet and the 64 page booklet has for the first time all the lyrics to all the songs, plus new sleeve notes by Andy and Colin. This is a limited pressed box, do not wait! CDXTC9 CHECK IT OUT! So how is *THIS* possible? I ended up paying over $100 for mine, and suddenly it is appearing for only $35? Again, I'm not trying to squelch orders to Andy and Colin, but I'm sure that more than a few of you have already noticed this update and are also questioning as to what this is about! Is *THIS* the same APPLE BOX? Of course, this copy probably won't come with the link to the two new songs, but it just left me speechless for a moment. Kevin

Worth the wait. Stone cold Bush!!! Wow. I am an army dreamer. Ba-ba-babooshska!!! Thank you Kate. (She shares my birthday, you know, that's why she's beautifully weird. The other one is the gov of California, but he hasn't got those tits, nor the beautiful music). Listening now, this music she has made is the culmination of all that she promised and threatened to deliver. Everything was fine up until now, but here it really is!!! Oh, I melt...
