Because they are? I for one am very happy with both, and am especially
surprised by how good the quality of songwriting in Colin's contribution is.
Andy's is, of course, full of Bouncy Andy Goodness. Luscious harmonies,
muscular guitar, hooks that sink in deep ... what more could you ask for? A
whole album? Well, yes, but...

FWIW, people who are waiting to simply get the two songs, they will be
available for individual sale on the IDEA site very soon. Your patience will
be rewarded.

Can I be the first to point out that the long-rumoured and
controversial Google Print (print.google.com) has finally been
launched, offering plenty of amusement for anyone typing in our
favourite three-letter band name?

It all comes as a bit of a surprise for anyone who thought Google
Print was going to consist entirely of dusty tomes free of copyright
problems. For a start, there's the whole of Chris Twomey's
"Chalkhills & Children", plus a lot of minor references in other
recent books.

I particularly liked this, from The Rough Guide to Cult Pop: "XTC
used the Uffington White Horse on the sleeve of English Settlement,
baffling American fans who thought the famous chalk-hill cutting was
a very bad drawing."

And then there's "The Lyrics of Civility: Biblical Images and Popular
Music Lyrics in American Culture" by Kenneth G Bielen, which declares
of "Dear God" that "In very clear, meaningful language, XTC proclaims
its refusal of Christianity".

Great insight , Ken.

Latest issue of Paste has a Paul McCartney interview with the
following tidbit:

One band you get compared to is XTC. "English Tea" from your new
album, sounds almost like something Andy Partridge would've done. Do
you listen to XTC, and are you influenced by their work?
Yeah, I listen to XTC and did a little bit of work with one of the
guys once, but I wouldn't see the connection. I don't know anything
of theirs that's like "English Tea." To me, it's more like Noel
Coward. Do you know Noel Coward?

Anyone else on the list a big fan who's been looking forward to her next
album for as long as I have?

Anyway, tomorrow sees the release of Aerial, and you can bet I'll be down to
the shops to buy it.

She has to be the most intelligent and interesting female artist and one of
the most interesting across the board.

Folks:

Oh man, I just ordered my copy of the APPLE BOX, after mulling over whether
or not mere packaging and the promise of two tracks (and a couple of
T-shirts) was really worth it. Yet, okay, okay, okay, I'm a sucker for
reissues, repackaged to honor the wonderful thing that we all knew they
were when they were initially released, even though I won't get rid of my
original copy of APPLE VENUS, VOL. I because both Andy and Colin signed it.
Heck, I stood out in the bitter cold in front of Downtown Tower Records in
the Village for nearly two hours to get that thing, with absolutely *NO*
booklet of lyrics or digipack type cover art, but I guess that is a mere
one of many reasons why the lads were not really all that satisfied with
the way they were treated even by this small label. Eegads, if the *SMALL*
labels won't even treat their artists with respect, what are we, as fans,
supposed to do? And don't be blaming the artists for expensive attempts to
get their stuff out there the way they'd like! I don't know what type of
lessons that the big label thinks it is trying to "teach" Andy and Colin,
but the lesson they teach me, personally, is that they just like to play
this nasty game of cat and mouse just to stick it to the artists for some
reason I'm obviously not privy to while the consumer ends up eating crow
just for being fans!! I can't blame an artist for trying!

I know that, another kind of campaign to get old music of interest out
there comes from the former members of Gentle Giant. I have only recently
learned that there is indeed a website around this band. I guess that some
of you might even have that rare box of "stuff" from the band, including so
many rareties and outtakes, etc. I bought a good majority of their old
albums as 35th anniversary editions with one or two bonus tracks apiece.
Actually, I bought these because the sound is so incredible when put up
against those horrible issues just tossed out there by their former label,
Capitol Records. I don't know if their Columbia albums have also been
bought up by the Shulmans and are also being distributed and sold in retail
stores under the new imprint. If so, I will eagerly seek these out as
well. The sonic upgrade is fantastic here, although a very interesting
remix of the entire FREE HAND album was circulating out there at one time.
It couldn't, however, stand up to this new original mix.

So, has anyone gotten their APPLE BOX as yet? Is it packaged similar, say,
to the Rolling Stones' singles boxes? At least that is how I imagine it.

A wonderful set I'm enjoying again and again is the Band's fantastic
MUSICAL HISTORY set. Even the material from the original albums is
startlingly clean and as good as the original masters are ever going to
get!!

I'm also enjoying the Talking Heads' set, although I'm noticing that some
DVD players don't always accept the dual disk formats. The basic CD music,
though, is so full, so much better than any CD issue of any of these
albums. Kinda sorry that I never witnessed the now very rare Rauschenberg
cover for SPEAKING IN TONGUES, but this almost makes up for it, even as
fragile as it is.

But, please, major lable honchoes, take it easy on the artists and
especially on the consumers!! Artists gotta make money; that is obvious,
but we consumers gotta be able to afford it all so we can enjoy the goodies
that are floating around out there waiting for tangible release!

Looking forward to Kate Bush.

Kevin

Hello Chalkfolk,

Has anyone who purchased the Apple Box had any problems getting access to
the singles?

My recent email to Idea has gone unanswered for going on three days and now
my pin # does not work.

Any suggestions?

How many poor peacocks may have been harmed in the making of the Apple
Box? Hmmm...

1) Stupendous presentation, as to be expected. A lovely artefact to
    add to my XTC "shrine".
2) The new songs: "Spiral" might have come off "Mummer". Vintage
Andy, jaunty and witty, top guitar interplay and I'm lovin' the
"brass". Not necessarily top-shelf drop-dead XTC, given the
height they've previously set on the bar, but entirely worthy for
all that. Proves they've still got it, no? Stylus dropping onto
vinyl at the end is a cute touch. "Say It" continues Colin's
fascination with domesticity (as he has remarked himself), couched
in that cosy traditional Kinks-y structure he seems to have lately
favoured. A warm vocal performance and clever wordage ("never
    leave home without it")...
3) Can someone "in the know" tell us who, if anyone, is supporting AP
& CM instrumentally on these numbers? Who produced? All that
stuff, some of us need to know.

The actual AV discs seem to have been mastered "hotter" than the
original pressings (has anyone else noticed?). All up, a splendid
investment for the XTC completist (and aren't most of us just that?)

No doubt those well-heeled discerning layabouts who bought the "Set"
can reveal to we paupers what the mystery surprise inclusion is? Over
to you, Mark...
