I first heard XTC in Canada, when they played Nigel on CHOM-FM quite a
lot the summer I graduated from high school. I wrote them off as another
one of those herky-jerky Devo wannabes and didn't pay any further
attention, I was of the opinion that anything played on commercial radio
must be crap. How wrong I was in this case. I finally got hooked a couple
of years later by a friend in college who indoctrinated me with Black Sea.
XTC's always been more popular in Canada than the rest of the world.
Drums And Wires actually went gold, as I'm pretty sure English Settlement,
Skylarking, and Oranges And Lemons did too.

Hi folks, been a while, but I thought I'd pop in real quick, even though
I've yet to read the 200 or so Chalkhills that came out since AV1 was
released. Here are a couple of Christmas songs you may want to include
on your list:

1) Christmas In Suburbia (Martin Newell)

This is probably my favorite MN song, and what's more, Andy produced
it, along with the rest of the 'Greatest Living Englishman' CD. A bit
depressing, but hey.

2) Happy Christmas (War is Over) - (John Lennon)

Great song, in spite of Yoko's presence.

3) Wonderful Christmastime (Paul McCartney & Wings)

Not his best tune by a long shot, but it's cheery and kind of fun.

4) Charlie Brown Christmas Soundtrack (Vince Guaraldi)

This is the only Christmas Album anyone really needs. The
instrumental version of 'Christmastime is Here' is worth the CD price
alone.

5) Always Winter, Never Christmas ()

Fun song, not really a Christmas tune, but the word Christmas is in
there all over the place, and that should count for something.

6) Little Saint Nick (Beach Boys)

     Fun Christmas song, California Style.

Well, that's all for now. See you in another 6 months or so.

Waiting for AV2,

Constantine Pappas

Andy called me again on Monday the 18th! Sheesh, what a pest! I wish this
guy would stop bugging me! Doesn't he have better things to do?!

Ahem... Kidding. Totally kidding.

Actually, the reason he called was to convey some new lyrics.

Becki diGregorio had acquired a demo of a song called "Susan Revolving"
which was originally passed over as a potential Dukes song. The demo was
just Andy playing acoustic guitar & singing and the song wasn't finished...
it just... sort of... stops.

Considering that the song was never released, it is not covered by BMI or
ASCAP. Therefore, Becki asked if I would get permission from Andy to cover
the song. After expressing his amazement over how far some of his
cast-offs and odd demos have travelled, Andy then remembered that it wasn't
even finished.

He said that Becki can cover the song but that he wanted to finish it
first. He then asked if I'd send him the lyrics from the demo! I did and
he replied back killing one verse and adding two more.

Becki is working on her new recording. It's going slowly but she is quite
pleased with the results thus far. With the exception of covering (the new
and improved) Susan Revolving, there is no other planned XTC or ex-XTC
involvement.

For those who don't know, Becki's first CD, "seven worthies of the bamboo
grove" features Andy Partridge on a bit of "knob-twiddling" and Dave
Gregory on acoustic guitar, electric guitar and keyboards on three songs.

For more info, contact Becki at ziglain@cruzio.com or visit her website at:

Hi Fellow Chalkhillians,

I'd really like a shot at organizing an xTc Chalkhills CD. I'm
fairly new to the list and am unaware of any prior CD's that may
or may not have been realized (I haven't checked the archives,
silly me). However, I was involved in a similar project about a
year ago on another pop music discussion list and it turned out
great. Here's some proposed guidelines:

1) The CD will be limited to 74 minutes of music, so first come,
first reserved. Anything with reasonable sound quality will be
accepted. So, come on you bedroom Brian Wilsons! Give it your
best shot. Note: I want the exclusive right to submit my own
version of either Humble Daisy or Mermaid Smiled!

2) Email me with the xTc song (and its length) you'd like to
cover.

3) Once I have sufficient commitments for a full CD, submitting
artists will send me a their xTc cover song on CD (preferably) or
cassette, along with a blank *audio* CD-R. I'll dub the final
product onto this blank *audio* CD-R and return it to you, the
artist. Also, I'd like some info and perhaps a picture of you/your
band for inclusion in the CD booklet (such as it will be). I'd
like all submissions in by, say, late January of next year (the
holidaze approacheth!).

4) Final versions of the CD will be made available to
non-contributing members of Chalkhills for a reasonable fee. Due
to possible time and budget constraints, this may turn into a
*very* limited run. I'd like to think that this CD could be fully
completed by April 1, 2000.

I'm more than willing to do this if you are! Please email me
off-list if you're interested in helping me make this happen.
Also, anyone who'd like to help me with the CD booklet (maybe with
design, but mostly duplication and assembly), please feel free to
volunteer! I live in the most beautiful city in the world, Los
Angeles, so any LA-area Chalkies, email me if you like.

Again, I've got dibs on either Humble Daisy or Mermaid Smiled!!!

BTW, on Ian C. Stewart's excellent Rare/Live xTc website, I was
listening to the boys on a radio station show in Boston and after
one of the songs, the DJ said "That was great!" to which Andy
replied "Great, didn't they?". I think "Great! Didn't They?"
would be a silly-cool title for this project, but any other
suggestions would be more than welcomed.

Well, I await your email with great anticipation!

Sincerely,

Kerry Chicoine

The recent spate of postings on the musical equipment possessed by the

Compulsory reading for all is an article by Walter Becker (of Steely Dan

2) XtC covering McCartney thread: I'd like to hear our boys tackle
"Rockestra Theme" (off "Back To The Egg") with the following line-up: Andy,
gtr, ld vox; Colin, bass, bg vox;
Dave, ld gtr, bg vox; Barry, kbds. On drums: Terry Chambers, Pete Phipps,
E.I.E.I. Owen, Prairie Prince, Pat Mastellotto, Dave Mattacks, Chris
Sharrock, Brian Doherty and that new chappie who's doing AV2 with them. With
the London Session Orchestra. All double-tracked...

3) Musical instruments thread: I sold my Burns Bison and Dan Armstrong
see-thru years ago. That leaves me with a battered cowbell, a single maracca
and a fertile imagination.

Finally, to blow my own french trombone for a bit here (oo-err!), it's well
nigh on a year since I conducted interviews with both Terry Chambers and Andy

In #5-288, Richard Pedretti-Allen said there might be legal complications
of releasing Fuzzy Warbles since EMI owns all them thar songs.

Does this mean that Idea is not going to buy up their Virgin/EMI back
catalogue? It'd probably cost a pretty penny (and probably quite a few
ugly c-notes) but it's always to good to see artists own their own work.

Which is a shame, really. I could see the luxurious treatment that Elvis
Costello got from Ryko ie., alternate takes, b-sides, digital remastering,
etc., would look good on our lads.

Can anyone write a song like Andy?
I'm always confused by people who want other bands to
sound just like XTC. If you want to hear XTC, play
their records! I'm glad there aren't a bunch of pale
imitators out there to spoil it for us.

In regards to your question, I'm guesing you're
looking for intellectually and emotionally stimulating
songs that aren't stuffy, with a rich sound and good
production.
Well, I've recommended this one before on this list,
but you really need to get a copy of Joni Mitchell's
Hejira. Put aside any preconcieved notions you may
have about her, and just get the damn thing! I
GUARANTEE you won't be disappointed. Exceptional
songwriting (the New York Times doesn't call her one
of the most significant songwriters of the century for
nothing), beautiful voice, excellant arrangements
(Jaco Pastorius' bass sends shivers down my spine).
Score: 9.5 out of 10 (ten being unatainable
perfection).

Joe Jackson's Heaven & Hell is another must have.
Classical and rock have never blended so seamlessly or
engagingly. Incredible songwriting, guest appearances
by Jane Siberry, Suzanne Vega and others. Wonderful!

You might also check out Los Lobos' supurb Kiko album.
The songrwiting isnt as stellar as Andy's but it sure
sounds great!

Diamond, that was a gem.

I am an avid collector of XTC parodies - I always love to see them here.

Yours took me back - I first got to know SWO via MTV, and my sister and I
had motions we did during the chorus and everything. One thing we liked to
do was shout out or whisper "Six!" in the pause between "five" and
"senses". You think I was a strange kid, but wait till you hear that I was
at least 14 at this point.

I have been meaning to post my own weirdalifying of this song, but so far I
only have the chorus:

I've got 1-2-3-4-5 Chalkhills issues I'm behind
I'm trying to read them all but I've got . . .

I'll try to flesh that out this weekend. You've thrown down the gauntlet,
so to speak.

Anyone else got some they're hiding? If you don't care to post them for all
to laugh at, at least send it to me so I can laugh at, I mean appreciate,
it.

Misty mentioned "Why not XTC?" for the upcoming album of

dibs on doing that, as he co-wrote it.

Salutations, Chalkhillians!

First of all, thank you to all those who responded both personally and on
the list to my request for Xmas songs.
Unfortunately the only new one (besides that Band Aid song!) I've been able
to find in my collection is a live version of "White Xmas" by Stiff Little
Fingers. I've been in touch with MinerWerks privately about his astounding
collection.

I probably won't be the only one to respond to Iain's request for info on
the Captain Beefheart tribute album, but here goes:
Title : "Fast 'N Bulbous" (1988) - imaginary Records (UK)
12 tracks - mine's vinyl - dunno if it was issued on CD.
Features XTC "Ella Guru", That Petrol Emotion "Hot Head", Sonic Youth
"Electricity", The Mock Turtles "Big Eyed Beans From Venus" (my favourite)
etc, etc.....need more info? Email me privately.

Musical Insruments I own:
1976 Fender Telecaster Deluxe
Ibanez Bass (black)
crappy Korean or something Acostic/electric 6 string (pickup doesn't work)
Dan Armstrong tube amp
Various pedals, echo unit etc

Musical Instruments I am incompetent on:
All of the above.

I'm interested to hear Minster Hill......

I try to imagine XTC doing "Bohemian Rhapsody" and it just can't be done,
like having an orgasm during root canal.(hey, unless you're Jack Nicholson
in Roger Corman's Little Shop Of Horrors!)I'd like to see a cover album XTC
might actually do, along the lines of the covers REM used to do to close
their shows. They'd come up with some weird choices that actually worked,
and some that were pretty accurate reflections of their musical
influences(the one time I saw them in '86 they did Billy Preston's "Will It
Go Round In Circles," and Television's "See No Evil." Guess which one
reflected their musical influences. :-)). I'd like to see XTC do an album
of covers like that.
So Molly had a couple of great ideas:
1. Baby, You're A Rich Man- The Beatles
2. Circle Sky- The Monkees
and I'll add:
3. The Castle- Love
4, I just Wasn't Made For These Times-The Beach Boys(either Dukes or XTC,
Colin singing)
5. My World Fell Down- Saggitarius
6. Autumn Almanac- The Kinks
7.Hold Your Head Up- Argent(Colin singing)
8. Green Tamborine- The Lemon Pipers(Dukes or Fuzzy Warbles)
9. Mary Anne With The Shaky Hands- The Who
10. Eating The Bear- Joan Armatrading(hey, Andy played guitar on her version)
11. Nadir's Big Chance- Peter Hamill
12. Let Love Reside- Kevin Coyne

I was trying to think of songs XTC themselves might find intriguing
choices, hopefully I succeeded.

Subject: more Xmas tracks

Hi all,

"Thanks For Christmas" is a good pop song, not soppy at all, I love its
englishsettlementesque 12-string strumming sound.
As to "Countdown to Christmas Party Time" it's funny , like a
divertimento, it's just another XTC level, isn't it?

Yes, I've finally found myself involved in that Christmas songs thread,
so there a few more:

- Christmas Song (Jethro Tull,1968 -Living in the Past)
- Christmas in Suburbia (Martin Newell, the Gratest Living Englishman,
sorry, has this been already mentioned here?)

perhaps no particularly on Christmas, but it may help

- Goodbye December (John Mayall- Back to the Roots)
- Shipbuilding (Elvis Costello-Punch the Clock; yes, I know it's mainly
about Falklands war but...)
- Famous Blue Raincoat (Leonard Cohen- Songs from Love and Hate)
- (mmmhhh....)

To Chalkhers who are doing some kind of compilation with this: I would
thank private e-mails from you for updates -I've lost the last digests
~~~~~~~~~ --- ...  ..   ..  .   .
Regards
Imanol
