While XTC wears its love for The Beatles, music hall and The Beach Boys like a badge of honour, the elegant, uneasy noise they make is like no other. Trainspotters will be gladdened by "I'd Like That (Say A Sunflower)", recorded by Partridge on a cheap cassette player minutes after writing it. 8/10. I just got one this weekend. Among other things, I'd like to download some MP3's. It has become apparent that 99.9% of the MP3's out there are songs by unsigned/unknown bands. This is because major record labels wouldn't want to give their products away for free and little local bands need a way to get people to hear them. Have any of you discovered any great indie bands out there with MP3 files? There's thousands of bands listed at MP3.com, but who has time to listen to them all? I just got Homespun, and I love it. Its worth every penny. I would recomend those of you who have not bought AV or Homespun to buy Homespun first. It gets you into the new songs and AV just sounds better and shows the finished product. Homespun should have been released first in my opinion. It is creating some confusion in the marketplace (same songs / similar artwork) and TVT, having shipped something like 17,000 in the U.S. are going to stop distribution at 20,000. It may later be offered via the web. It was only mentioned in reference to the U.S. and I'm not sure it's even "official" yet. Yikes! Buy yours NOW, everyone! I was in Tower Records on Clark St. here in Chicago last weekend, and they had at least a couple dozen copies in stock, probably more. On sale for $12.99, if I recall. So those in the chicago area know where to find it. I would make the offer of picking up copies for people, but I live all the way across town from Tower, and don't get up there very often.(But if you plead your case I'll see what I can do). Oh, it's really good, and you need it! RE: They Might be Giants I love them too, although I haven't kept up on the last couple of albums. I highly reccomend Lincoln and Flood, their best two records, imo. Lincoln was the soundtrack to a rather rough spot I had about seven years ago, it's only recently that I can listen to it w/o bringing up a lot of bad memories. I met TMBG a few years ago when I was a humble employee of a record store in Ann Arbor. Unfortunately, they were pretty much pricks. Hasn't stopped my liking their music, however. I tried to justify their behavior-if I was on tour and exhausted, I would probably treat some record store geek/fan badly as well. Did end up with a photo and some autogtraphs, so It wasn't all bad.

AND .......Homespun is due in stores today in Canada (that is if TVT have shipped it after all the confusion???) I will be heading to several stores at lunch time to try and get a copy. I look forward to hearing a good quality copy of the demo's. I haven't listened to them since AV1 came out but I know that there are moments that I liked better than the final product. Well, I'm not sure what I wrote was successful in being sent in so I'm making this a lot shorter. John Hiatt is a truly amazing artist that maybe some XTC fans will enjoy. He has nothing even closly related to the XTC sound, but if I have gone to all the trouble of buying seven of his cds in the past two weeks ( I did roughly the same after my first XTC experience- Nonsuch!), I gotta be here to recommend his music to you. I noticed Paul Wilkinson, the guy who spearheads the best Martin Newell website, is into some of his stuff also, so at least I'm not alone. Also, the Texas Longhorns are going to get creamed this Saturday. Sorry, had to jump in on our football fun here- college is better that pro don't you know. Cheers

My best friend and her husband are adopting 2 kids this year - they picked up their sweet infant son from the Marshall Islands in July and hope to collect their beautiful baby girl from Guatemala yet this year. They are familiar with XTC, mainly because you can't talk to me for more than 5 minutes without hearing about them, but are not fans. And I have no aspirations of converting them, but I do want to make a lovely Welcome to our World tape for them and their wee ones. As for the future, I have plans to put up a website wherein contributors could send me their tape, it would be encoded as MP3 and put up on the site for download. Voting would then determine which songs would make it onto a CD for distribution. I have written the specification and it is now being reviewed by my webmaster.
