This review of Homespun appeared in the Sydney Sun-Herald of 17 October:

Certainly one for buffs, yet anyone with an interest in the creation of
stellar pop might like a peep at Andy Partridge at work in his shed: Homespun
is the demo versions of the songs on XTC's last album, Apple Venus Volume 1.
While XTC wears its love for The Beatles, music hall and The Beach Boys like
a badge of honour, the elegant, uneasy noise they make is like no other.
Trainspotters will be gladdened by "I'd Like That (Say A Sunflower)",
recorded by Partridge on a cheap cassette player minutes after writing it.

8/10. Cross reference: Phillip Glass, The Beatles, Squeeze.

Someone mentioned on today's list that they just
purchased a new cd burner. I just got one this
weekend. Among other things, I'd like to download some
MP3's. It has become apparent that 99.9% of the MP3's
out there are songs by unsigned/unknown bands. This
is because major record labels wouldn't want to give
their products away for free and little local bands
need a way to get people to hear them. Have any of you
discovered any great indie bands out there with MP3
files? There's thousands of bands listed at MP3.com,
but who has time to listen to them all? Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Veronica

your perspective on the group, who I feel is the best group of this era.
Yes, in my oppinion, Danny and the boys rip XTC. Not saying they are
better, but they are really good in what they do. I am asking because
very early Boingo had a very similar sound to XTC. Anyway, let me know
what your thoughts are on this.<

I'm a HUGE Boingo fan (I'd have to say that for me, they are the BEST
band that ever existed), and am personally responsible for the vast
majority of Boingo MIDI files you will find on the Internet (well, I
am).

I don't know what your liking of them has to do with any supposed
ignorance(?) of people on this list, but I've heard from a few here who
like them, too, so we're not alone.

If you'd like to talk about them, you'd probably want to do so in
private. I doubt a long-winded discussion here will be looked upon
favorably. ;-)

Oh, BTW - XTC rocks, too, but in a totally different way.

See ya,

I just got Homespun, and I love it. Its worth every penny. I would
recomend those of you who have not bought AV or Homespun to buy Homespun
first. It gets you into the new songs and AV just sounds better and shows
the finished product. Homespun should have been released first in my
opinion. I have not bought the Transistor Box set yet, thats next. What
did everyone think of that? Is it worth the money?

RE:
Lastly, it appears that "Homespun" may be pulled from
distribution. It is creating some confusion in the
marketplace (same songs / similar artwork) and TVT,
having shipped something like 17,000 in the U.S. are
going to stop distribution at 20,000. It may later be
offered via the web. It was only mentioned in
reference to the U.S. and I'm not sure it's even
"official" yet.

Yikes!
Buy yours NOW, everyone!
I was in Tower Records on Clark St. here in Chicago
last weekend, and they had at least a couple dozen
copies in stock, probably more. On sale for $12.99, if
I recall. So those in the chicago area know where to
find it. I would make the offer of picking up copies
for people, but I live all the way across town from
Tower, and don't get up there very often.(But if you
plead your case I'll see what I can do).

Oh, it's really good, and you need it!

RE: They Might be Giants
I love them too, although I haven't kept up on the
last couple of albums. I highly reccomend Lincoln and
Flood, their best two records, imo. Lincoln was the
soundtrack to a rather rough spot I had about seven
years ago, it's only recently that I can listen to it
w/o bringing up a lot of bad memories.
I met TMBG a few years ago when I was a humble
employee of a record store in Ann Arbor.
Unfortunately, they were pretty much pricks. Hasn't
stopped my liking their music, however. I tried to
justify their behavior-if I was on tour and exhausted,
I would probably treat some record store geek/fan
badly as well. Did end up with a photo and some
autogtraphs, so It wasn't all bad.

surreal enough to enjoy)
I saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus - John Mellencamp's version
Thanks for Christmas-You know who
Father Christmas-The Kinks
Christmas in LA-Tom Petty
That Kate Bush tune that also escapes me at the moment..
2000 Miles-The Pretenders

As to football, well, its an acquired taste just like many of the
bands cited throughout previous issues of Chalkhills.

As a longtime fan (came on board with Black Sea, although began to listen
with interest around Nigel), I have to concede that Go2 has some very
interesting fun moments and has been in the CD player with AV1).

Good question Molly! Unfortunately I don't have my XTC thinking cap on
at the moment. I do, however, have my Dukes of Stratosphere hat on and
here is what I think the Dukes should cover:

"Incense and Peppermints" - Strawberry Alarm Clock
"See Emily Play" - Pink Floyd
"Queen Bitch" - David Bowie
"Life on Mars" - "
"Sunshine of Your Love" - Cream
"A Well Respected Man" - The Kinks
"Drivin'" - "
"Daydream Believer" - The Monkees
"Downtown" - Petula Clark
"Westminster Cathedral" - Someone will have to fill me in on this one..

I have to stop now, I'm getting the giggles.....

Molly was talking about more christmas songs:

>Oh Kate Bush did a song, but I can't remember it now,
>it's on the Edge of Christmas CD.

I believe it's called "December Will Be Magic Again".

and Iain said:

>....and I think (Sir) Cliff Richard's done at least one Christmas song, but
>I can't think of its name.

He did one called "Little Town". ***

Well, I can't compete with Todd's mass of stuff, but here's my usual
noisemakers

King 3-B trombone
Yamaha 612 bass trombone
Bach 42-B trombone
Korg 01-W/FD
Mac OS 8 using Band in the Box, Finale

I often use a tambourine too, but i can't remember who made it. ***

I've given 4 Apple Venus 1s to friends so far. One I gave to my friend
Corey. She's a trombone player also, and her husband plays tuba, and all 4
of their children are all playing instruments of some kind. Their oldest ,
David is 15, he plays the trombone, violin and bass guitar. Bass seems to
be the one he's taking to most. So I showed him AV1 and told him to check
out the best bass player in pop music. He really likes it and I'm gonna
bring him more. What an education!

No real xtc content here but some of my favourite pop Xmas tracks
that are worth looking for your ultimate holiday tape.

Captain Sensible - One Christmas Catalogue
Chris Stamey (ex DB's) - Christmas Time
David Bowie/Bing Crosby - Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy
Jona Lewie - Stop the Calvry
Martin Newell - Christmas in Suburbia
	NRBQ - Christmas Wish
The Partridge Family - My Christmas Card to You
Patty Surby & the Canadian VIP's - I Want a Beatle for Christmas
	The Pretenders - 2000 Miles
The Ramones - Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight)
	The Turtles - Living Doll
	The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping
	The Kinks - Father Christmas
Kirsty MacColl & The Poques - Fairytale of New York
Stevie Wonder - Someday at Christmas
	XTC - Thanks for Christmas

And for any of you who happen to be really interested in Christmas
music...I have been making Christmas tapes for my friends and family as
gifts for the last eight years. They have been prized possessions for the
lucky receivers. I have an Excel spreadsheet listing all the 300 or so
tracks from these tapes if someone wants a copy for some inspiration.

	AND

.......Homespun is due in stores today in Canada (that is if TVT
have shipped it after all the confusion???) I will be heading to several
stores at lunch time to try and get a copy. I look forward to hearing a
good quality copy of the demo's. I haven't listened to them since AV1 came
out but I know that there are moments that I liked better than the final
product. It will be interesting to hear them again.

	Cheers.

>>I recently bought the latest Mr Bungle cd: California. It's really great,
with more weight on melody than before. It's even got some (almost) normal
songwriting on it.

I'll second that! A classic album if ever there was one, and a must for all
Zappa/Beach Boys fans.......dig that crazy Tibetan throat music mayhem!

>>To me you can either like Squeeze or XTC, not both,
but I like both.

Cough.

>>There's nothing like sports to turn
usually normal functioning people into incoherent,
violent idiots!

....or at least a tiny minority of sports fans. The rest of us, being
sentient and erudite individuals, are able to enjoy sports AND music without
feeling the need to pontificate about the faults of either. Funny
that.......

Oh yeah, Up The Hammers! Now that's football.......

>>I really disagree with Andy Partridge when he says XTC
aren't cool. XTC is dripping with coolness!

Well yes, but I think you mean cool in the sense of "good" (or to be more
accurate, in the sense of "as favoured by me") as opposed to the usual sense
which implies other adjectives like fashionable, trendy, "hip" etc (that's
right....I'm hep to the new jazz thang kids! nice...). Andy is totally
right. XTC are not remotely "cool" in the most generally recognized sense of
the word, which is precisely why they can release albums as astonishing as
"Apple Venus Vol.1" without immediately becoming obscenely wealthy and more
famous than God (who, it has to be said, has all the worst tunes). Apart
from anything else, they're from Swindon so coolness really isn't an option
I'm afraid. Not even with that roundabout.

>>But like my Limp
Bizkit loving neice tells me and what I've heard from
a lot of people at her young age of 19 have told me-
XTC sucks.

Hey, I like XTC and Limp Bizkit. Wow, that must make me rilly rilly cool,
right? Or do the two things cancel each other out? Oh how I wish I was young
again!!!

>>My
own strange thought here- XTC are so cool, they're the
type of band that Pulp Fiction's Mia Wallace would get
into. (I like Mia, although it should be noted she is
dumb for snorting heroin or any drug for that matter).

You do, of course, realize that Mia is a fictional character? Besides which,
she thought it was cocaine, so snorting it would strike me as being the most
sensible course of action. And being a fan of hard drugs she would probably
be more yer Dukes aficionado than yer standard XTC acolyte, although I may
be talking bollocks. Again.

>>Andy called me on Monday and we talked for almost an hour. It was great
fun!

Git.

>>Would anyone like my list of the hair products I own?

Well it would certainly be of more practical use than a list of items of
musical equipment which, incidentally, proves nothing more than that the
people concerned have a lot of disposable income and a desire to impress
others....(far easier to achieve by not boasting about the size of your hard
drive, in my humble etc).

>>Norman Cook formed Beats International, then that
disappeared, and now he's Fatboy Slim. Erm...whatever, Norman.

A slight over simplification, but not to worry. Pizzaman anyone? Freak
Power? He's a local lad you know...often seen chomping on a chip butty by
Brighton pier. That's a chip and caviar butty, in case you were wondering.

>>Paul
Heaton, on the other hand, formed the Beautiful South. Go buy all their
albums right now. I'll wait.

Well, buy the first two at least and then borrow the others and wonder what
exactly went wrong. The lyrics are still good (on occasion) but what
happened to the imaginative and quirky tunes? I believe they moved to
Blandsville, Idaho. And that bloody awful "Rotterdam" song should never have
passed the quality control test.

>>"Twisted Tenderness" from Electronic, which is ten
times better than their previous,
easily-available-in-the-States-but-who-exactly-would-want-it album)?

I'm sure I'm not the only person who can't stand to listen to Electronic due
to the appalling way Johnny Marr has pissed away his talent since leaving
The Smiths. Considering that he was widely acknowledged as THE guitarist of
his generation, it has always struck me as hugely disappointing that he
couldn't bring himself to do anything more interesting than that sub-New
Order drivel, inaudible guitar parts and all. What a waste.

>>Here's a few good christmas records:

Here's my favourite......"Tijuana Christmas" by The Torero Band. Like the
theme to "Terry & June" played by PCP fiends, for over an hour, with
virtually every Christmas carol included. Wonderful stuff, and almost
guaranteed to have your neighbours in tears if you play it loud enough.
"Good King Wenceslas" is a particular favourite of mine. Seriously.

>>Why does everything I say on this list tend to piss so many off?

Speaking from experience, I'd say it's because you're totally up yourself.

>>Can I
state my oppinion or are we all so close minded that I have to agree with
everything that everyone else says?

You do what you like mate, but better spelling and grammar would probably
help to put the pedants off the scent! Aw, I'm jest kiddin' ya!

Salut!

I'm not sure what I wrote was successful in being sent

Hey Moms & Dads-

What XTC songs particularly resonate for you as regards the parenting
experience?

My best friend and her husband are adopting 2 kids this year - they picked
up their sweet infant son from the Marshall Islands in July and hope to
collect their beautiful baby girl from Guatemala yet this year. They are
familiar with XTC, mainly because you can't talk to me for more than 5
minutes without hearing about them, but are not fans. And I have no
aspirations of converting them, but I do want to make a lovely Welcome to
our World tape for them and their wee ones. Here are the tracks I'm
including (or at least considering) so far, in the order in which I thought
of them:

Garden of Earthly Delights
Pale and Precious
Holly up on Poppy
Then She Appeared
Pink Thing
Hold Me My Daddy
Making Plans for Nigel
No Thugs in Our House
Angry Young Men
Scissor Man
Toys
This World Over
I Remember the Sun
Earn Enough for Us
Chalkhills and Children
I Can't Own Her
Knights in Shining Karma
the Giant Peach demos

I want songs that will mean something to them with their new perspective as
parents. Something they can listen to late at night when they're up with
Mr. and Ms. Fussy-Pants, and possibly that the little ones themselves will
groove to when they're big enough to groove. I want songs that have to do
with children and childhood and parenting and the parent-child relationship
and growing up. Any more suggestions?

Dear Chalkers,

thanks to all who suggested snips and criteria for the anthology I
wanted to send to my XTC-less sweetheart.

Of course XTC-wooing had to share space with girl-wooing, so I had to
include a few more romantic items (*blush*), and then, what the heck, I
also included some of *my* favourite songs!

In case you care to know, here's the song list:

1. Making Plans for Nigel
2. Rocket From a Bottle
3. No Language in Our Lungs
4. Jason and the Argonauts
5. Snowman
6. Beating of Hearts
7. Me and the Wind
8. Grass
9. Seagulls Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her
10. Garden of Earthly Delights
11. Mermaid Smiled

First of all, I can understand this business of not having "a
chance to listen" to Go 2 - you should reserve at least 4-6
weeks of listening time to allow the record to properly grow
on you. Take some time off from your job, if you can; cancel
any dates or parties you might have planned to attend. Second,
surely the whole idea of "best" and "worst" songs is hardly the
sort of thing you'd really worry about with the greatest album
of all time? (Mind you, this is just my opinion, etc., but hey,
that's what you asked for.)

Satanas Diablo writes:

>Ba ba ba ba batery brides... Am I cool now?

You mistyped "battery," but yes, anyone who quotes a song
from Go 2 is automatically considered Cool! Congratulations!
Keep up the good work, Brian! (I'll hold off on the obvious
"Andy paints you" comment.)

>In? Hip? What is Hip anyway?
>God. This could go on forever...

I've never actually seen God, but I can't imagine His hips
going on *forever*... I always figured God would be a fairly
svelte type, but who knows, maybe He's just big-boned.
Someone told me once that my arms were too short to
box with Him. Ha!!! Like I'd ever want to try doing THAT!

re: Another XTC fan tribute?????

There have been six XTC fan tributes (excluding Testimonial Dinner):

Obscene Collection, Beasts I've Seen and Skylacking, all compiled by
Bizarre Depiction.

Chalkhills' Children '96, Chalkhills' Children '97: Don't Ring Us. and
Chalkhills' Children '98: Modern Time Neros, all compiled by me.

These are no longer available.

As for the future, I have plans to put up a website wherein contributors
could send me their tape, it would be encoded as MP3 and put up on the site
for download. Voting would then determine which songs would make it onto a
CD for distribution.

I have written the specification and it is now being reviewed by my
webmaster. He is promising a feasability assessment and cost estimate on
Thursday.

Then comes the tricky part. ...making it happen.

Cheers,
Richard

Subject: VH1 onslaught

Hello everyone!

This is a request, no, a call to arms...going out to all you American
chalkers, and you know who you are! How about we try and persuade VH1 to do
a 'Behind The Music' episode on our jocular boys, eh? I know, I know, it
has been proposed before, and now again (thanks, Cathy)... I think we might
have a shot at it, IF we all join in!

How about, in addition to our own thoughtful requests, we ask several good
friends to do the same..."and they told two friends..and they told two
friends, and so on...and so on....." Even if your pals aren't big fans,
don't they owe you one?....who watered their crummy ferns while they were
out of town?...then there was that lift to the airport during rush hour
traffic....and what about the bail money, huh??? .... oh yes, it IS payback
time, isn't it?

I think perseverance is the key to winning this one...how about a letter a
week for (insert length of time here.) I know there are more eloquent
chalkers than myself (amen!), and I'm counting on YOU folks to turn the
tide. I shall do my part as well...now all I need to do is get some friends...

Try the following addresses:

or-
go to VH1's website and click your way to SHOWS, I believe--

Moving on to the Christmas music thread, here's a few:

Santa Claus Is Smoking Reefer- The Squirrel Nut Zippers
Suzy Snowflake- Soul Coughing
The Little Drum Machine Boy- Beck
Christmas Piglet- Presidents of The United States of America
Mele Kalikimaka- Reel Big Fish

That's all for now, folks....

thank you, dear. I, for one, missed your presence on the list (and even
after reading Harrison's accounts, still regret no longer living in DC).

hm, to the fellow looking for Xmas music, I always liked the Bowie/Bing
Crosby thing. I know there were a lot of people who hated it on principle
(sell-out, whatever), but I'm too young to be bothered by that (it was
recorded the year of my birth), and anything sung by Bowie tends to make me
happy.

hm, XTC content-- I find it well and truly disturbing that it was ten years
ago that Pulse! magazine named English Settlement album of the decade, and
that people are now talking about the album of the nineties...

oh, yes, to Mark-- I finally went and looked at Guitargonauts, and I must
tell you, you have a very nice site there!

apples on trees, sending their dead melodies to me"
