Not that I don't have any, because I do, but I highly recommend taking a look at www.listen.com. It's a fairly comprehensive, cross-referenced and reviewed index to downloadable music, covering the known and the unknown alike (including the useful stuff on mp3.com), with a not-entirely- useless "sounds like..." feature. Favorite lyricists: I really can't get it down to 5, but I will anyway. In no particular order: Andy Prieboy, Jeff McGregor from the Solipsistics, Randy Newman, Aimee Mann and that Partridge guy. And speaking of lyricists, some of you may be interested in knowing that Anton Barbeau has a new CD coming out on Frigidisk in about 2 weeks; check it out at, oddly enough, www.frigidisk.com. So, if you own them already, you have to make a decision as to whether you want to lay out a modest amount of money for 2 new CD's worth of great live and BBC product. If you don't, it's a no-brainer. Suffice it to say that the sound quality is real good and the performances are energetic and tight; they were a very, very good live band. Also, they stretch out a little bit in places and you get to hear Dave's solos without them being layered into the mix as some of the studio recordings tend to do. Peace and music, Mike

I'm guessing that the Homespun thing is a rumor. I just don't believe they would do that. AV1 has been out for a while and I don't think its confusing people at all. Jumping in Gomorrah has to be my favorite track from GO 2. I just loved that track. I was listening to their new stuff and I really don't think they changed so much. I mean yes, there is a significant change, but I still feel that overall, their sound has many similar qualities. I loved the old stuff, as I love the new, so either way, they have continued to make music the fans would love. They grew up with us in a way... Sort of like Boingo. OH, as for TMBG, Lincoln would have to be my favorite record. I mean, going to visit the cow beneath the sea?! That was brilliant! As for the favorite lyricist thing, this is hard for me. I have so many, in so many genres of music, but I will have to go with whatever pops into my head. Which by the way, I wont mention people like Duke Ellington or Cab Calloway, to me, artists like that are above favorite lyricist lists. I mean, they are like the apostles of music sort of thing... David Lowery (Camper Van Beethoven, Cracker) Robyn Hitchcock (GOD) Mark Mothersbaugh (DEVO <Midget... damn, who could think of lyrics like that?!>) John Lydon (Sex Pistols, PIL) Bob Marley (If you don't know...) Chrissy Hynde (Pretenders) Mick Jones (BAD, The Clash) Joe Strummer (The Clash, The Pogues, Solo) Dale (Missing Persons) Frank Black (Pixies, Solo) David Byrne (Talking Heads) Ivan (Men Without Hats) Elvis Costello (come on, if he is not on the list then you gotta be crazy!) Daniel Ash (I did not enjoy the new stuff much, but overall, Love & Rockets, TOT had some really great stuff.) Jello Biafra (The outspoken punk himself of Dead Kennedy's.) Adam Ant. (Just the way he pushed his music with Marco... I don't know, I just loved it!) Beck. Though I am very old (moving on 26) and don't like a lot of the Pearl Jam aftermath groups, Beck is a great lyricist. Though I have not heard him in a long ass time, Howard Jones was also deserving of this list. (I would like to have Pauline Black <The Selecter> up here, but she did not write many of the songs she performed so I didn't put her up here, but she is one of my favorites.) Worst 1 of all time: Morrissey (don't hate me please, but after that "stop me I think I've heard this one before" song, I kept saying that to myself as all the songs became weak and boring. Anything before the later stuff and solo stuff was good.). I love J Marr though, and I enjoyed The The, but Electronic was a big disappointment. Though I like the members separately. Neil deserved this list also. I loved PSB!

It could've been worse, you know...I shudder at the string of horrid puns we could've faced after an exhortation to avoid the word "diaeresis" instead. (Rimshot.) Tanka. Tanka very much. Take my amphibrach! Please! New purchases: A big wad of Joni Mitchell. What can I say? I woke up with a craving. "For the Roses" is my favorite so far. (XTC content: still waiting for "Homespun". Maybe Andy consider it as some erratic improvised part but each time I hear it, it makes me laugh, I don't know why, but there's some early XTC essence -whatever it is-on it ,in one word : lovely. In my last message I wrote Box of Rhythms instead of Drum Machine, that's because in Spanish it's called Caja de Ritmos. The first time I heard xtc was a few years ago when my brother downloaded a short 40-second computer animation of a lot of gears moving. Why sould you care? Well it featured the song "Towers of London". After I heard it I was an instant fan. But anyway, does anyone know who made this or where I could find it? Soul Coughing is one of my favorite bands, but i've never heard of this song before and I know its not on any of their albums, so does anyone know where I could find it? He also mentioned e-mailing vh-1 to try and get them to make a "Behind The Music" on Xtc. I think it is everyone's duty who is a fan of Xtc to e-mail vh-1 right now about this! If we all e-mail them a lot maybe they'll do it because there are a lot of people on this list. I loved the "Where are they now" segment they did on them, but they pronounced xtc's name wrong! In fact, just about every time that i've heard someone interview them or talk about them on tv or on the radio, they always pronounce it wrong! I wonder if this makes Andy or Colin mad? well, since there's been some discussion lately about XTC fan tributes I
might as well at least hint about the cat I have in this here bag. See,
it goes like this:
BIZARRE DEPICTION is proud to announce O+L: THE XTC FANS' TRIBUTE TO
'ORANGES AND LEMONS.' All of the tracks have been reserved already and
the assembly process has begun. The fun part (the recording, the
compiling, the mastering) will take place over the next 6-8 months in
various parts of the world. Upon its completion, "O+L" will be
distributed via a website. ORDERS ARE NOT YET BEING ACCEPTED.
In the meantime BIZARRE DEPICTION will be re-releasing all of its XTC
tributes on CD and offering them separately and as a box set. THESE ARE
NOT AVAILABLE YET EITHER. I'm just making conversation at this point.

Regarding Oingo Boingo (now called Boingo) (formaly the mystic nights of
Oingo Boingo) I have a strange tale (Strange tail) Regarding them in context
with XTC and They Might be giants. Let me start at the begining...
My best friend and I were both RABID They Might Be Giants fans, they were
our favorite band. But then, last december, he found a band called... Oingo
boingo! well, he really seemed to like them. In fact, that week he but FOUR
of thier CD's. Well, I figured if he bought for of thier CD's in one week,
they must be good. So I asked him about it... and he made me promise never
to buy anything by them ever.
Is this strange? He has this... complex, I guesse, that makes him want to
keep everything to himself. He has "denied" me the right to buy anything by
Frank Zappa, Steely Dan, or Stephen King, just to name a few. I have no Idea
Why!!!
At any rate, about a week after he denied me the right to buy an Oingo
Boingo album, (December 18 to be exact) I bought my first XTC album. well,
so far I've heard nothing by Oingo Boingo that beats XTC, so I'm not to
worried.
But still, does my friends actions seem... a little strange to you? He's
always been an extremely neurotical and paranoid person (He looks just like
woody allen when he puts glasses on... another person I'm not allowed to
"Get Into" as he puts it)
He's also tried to make sure I don't get into Oingo Boingo by saying "I'd
never get into XTC"
to which I reply "I don't care!"
I'd love it if he got Into XTC!!!! The More The Merrier.
As of now, he has Oranges and lemons by XTC, which I made him buy. He really
like it, but he doesn't let it show very much.
Anyway, hope you enjoyed or scrolled down before you got to bored.

For one, I heard a band that had toured with them as their backing band talk about how much they hated TMBG after the experience, to the point that they'd stolen the license plates off John and John's van out of spite for being treated so badly. I wasn't sure I bought this story, and then last year a professor of mine, Adam Potkay, who was the lead singer of the New Jersey-based band SPIRAL JETTY, told me about their experience touring with them. He said they were basically assholes-- something that surprised me since Adam is truly one of the sweetest men I have ever met with an always-sunny disposition whom I had never heard say an unkind word about anyone. (I liked him as a person, I hated taking classes from him-- that cheery stuff will start to drive you nuts.) So, I don't know, I think it's a shame that they act like that, but it's nice to know there are others to counter it (I haven't had the chance to meet XTC, but it sounds like it's been a good experience for most. I did meet Mark Eitzel, formerly of American Music Club, a couple of times, and he is very friendly.) m.

I don't remember them ever being mentioned here, so I'll go ahead and do it. Their music can best be described as frenetic acousti-pop..... The two CDs they released are: "Giant" and "Wooden Footcops On The Highway"..... I highly recommend both of these, if you can find them. Anyone happen to know whatever happened to the Woodentops? thread-so much fun we have here on Chalkhills! I do
an oldies radio program on the weekends, so I scanned
the oldies catalogue I use to write the weekly
playlist. As I'm sure you'll agree, XTC doing oldies
should really be a Dukes reunion...1. The 59th Street
Bridge Song(Feelin' Groovy)- Simon And Garfunkel
(Scarborough Fair would be good too). 2. The Rain,
Park and Other Things- The Cowsills. 3. Surf's Up-
Beach Boys (an expensive track to buy on Ebay I might
add). 4. You're Lost Litte Girl-The Doors. 5. Sunshine
Superman-Donovan. 6. Marrakesh Express-Crosby, Stills
and Nash(maybe a lost b-side from The Big Express?).
7. Playground In My Mind-Clint Holmes (it has the
lyrics.."my name is Micheal and I've got a nickel",
remember that one?) 8. Moondance-Van Morrison (and
Todd Rundgren is back to capture the slick jazzy feel
of "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul"). 9. Octopus's
Garden-The Beatles (marking the return of Terry, not
only on drums, but on vocals..ha ha ha!) 10. Shapes of
Things-The Yardbirds (a good one for Colin?).
Honorable mentions...Spill The Wine by War (maybe
not), Tighten Up by Archie Bell and the Drells ("ok
Colin, Tighten Up on that bass"...) and Sugar Shack by
Jimmie Glimmer and the Fireballs (and yes Barry is
back for that one).
