Hi Chalkholders,

This is your annual reminder slash holiday greeting to dust off your copy of
XTC Live at the BBC 12/22/1980 and blast it from start to finish one more
time. It can be found on Transistor Blast Disc 4
http://chalkhills.org/reelbyreal/a_TransistorBlast.html
or the original live release
http://chalkhills.org/reelbyreal/a_BBCLive.html

It always sets the holiday mood for me in true XTC style and it takes me
back to a fond place a long time ago.

Happy New Year,

Jamie Lowe

Ok, so I have been reading Andy's twitters for about a month. I don't
have a "working" Twiiter account, so I just go the web page, which
Andy has been very good about putting out personal messages as well as
answering some of the people out there about these and other
matters. I appreciate how I can sort of, in a jeopardy way, get the
question asked. Or not...

Be back to talk in a few days, undergoing a close death at the
moment. At Crassmas too. Tough times.

Andy has been talking about some music with Hitchcock that may not see
the light of day as a shelved project. Mike Kenneally (sp?) has
announced up coming material in 2012. But mostly Andy has been talking
about his teeth health, specific dental surgery and more to come, so
I am giving him a bit of a break from thinking he wants to celebrate
any thing musically, and especially vocable, at this point. Always
nice to read Chalkhills on a Christmas Eve Day. God Bless him, all of
the musical friends we get to listen to, and all you Chalky people,
enjoy Christmas in your hearts. I hear the jingle bells still!

Here is to a better 2012!

In response to Mr.McCrea's message:

"I think Mr. Partridge has already embarrassed himself by making his
Fuzzy Warbles releases more of a priority than focusing on new XTC
material. During that span, there could have been at least 5 or 6 new
XTC albums for all of us to treasure. And now the band is kaput? I
still cannot believe this turn of events. It angers me to no end. My
favorite songwriter thinks he's washed up? Give me a break, Andy."

(It sounds like Mr. Notarian's message was along the same vein.) It
angers me to no end when people get upset that XTC aren't together any
more or that Partridge doesn't come out with a solo disc. If an artist
doesn't feel like they have it in them to write then who are we to
complain? Artists aren't some kind of slave/pet that MUST create when
WE want them to. At least Andy knew when to stop unlike some other
washed-up acts that continue to make records that are nothing but a
simple waste of plastic. Andy Partridge and XTC have a catalog that
most artists couldn't even touch when it comes to volume and flat out
consistently excellent work, and their fans should be happy enough
with that. And as for Partridge releasing Fuzzy Warbles, it was a
project that put some money in his pocket, and it was a pleasure to
hear how some of his songs evolved and to hear some of those songs
that didn't quite make the cut throughout the years.

In the words of Mr. Partridge:

Everything decays, forest tumbles down
To make the soil, planets fall apart
Just to feed the stars and stuff their larders
And what made me think we're any better
And what made me think we'd last forever...

The songs of XTC have more than fed the creative soil of this universe.
Let's "treasure" what we have.

That was another Bonnie, Bonnie Bramlett. And I suspect they both were
drunk at the time. Bonnie Raitt's too much of a class act to do that,
she'd probably give him a good piece of her mind though.

One of the many reasons I love this band is because of songs like
this. I got on board when "Black Sea" came out, so by the time "Big
Express" was released I was used to going "Huh? What the hell is
THIS?" when I first heard certain songs and then by the 4th of 5th
"listen" I was like "Man, what a great song!" Most of "Big Express"
was like that for me. I didn't know what to make of it at first, but
my faith in the band caused me to keep listening and I ended up loving
it! [Note: The other version on youtube was just the album cover but
the recording was sketchy so I took this version. I have no idea of
the video is good or not - I just minimized and and listened.]

If you have any interest in XTC then you must get a copy of
Shigemasa Fujimoto's comprehensive chronology of XTC.
This is an extremely important and definitive work.
It is the culmination of nearly twenty years of research and study.
It has had full cooperation from Dave and features an appendix that
charts Dave's career.
This is an absolutely brilliant book. Lots of useful information presented
in a concise logical format.
It gives all the record releases but is not a dry discography. It assembles
the day by day story of one of the most
overlooked bands of the last thirty five years. Lots of photos and rare
press clippings that I have never seen.
Beautifully done and self published.
It is a true labour of love and absolutely required if you have even a
passing interest in XTC.

I have an XTC sighting to report. Well, a hearing. And this time it's
not as bumper music on a free market-individualist radio show, my
mention of the host of which ruffled a feather or two on this Hill a
decade ago, as I recall.

No, this time it's on a music podcast of socialist-collectivist bent
called Sound Opinions from WBEZ-FM Chicago and PRX, the public radio
network that keeps changing its name. In the episode released on
Christmas Day, titled "The 2011 Desert Island Jukebox Special," Andy's
"Desert Island" can be heard around 19:49 in. Hosts Jim DeRogatis and
Greg Kot never named the song or credited XTC during the podcast,
although perhaps they did at their website (soundopinions.org).

The podcast is worth subscribing to -- I bought CDs by Trombone Shorty
and Le Butcherettes for gifts this past month based on Jim & Greg's
recommendations -- and you can get it for free at its own website or
via the iTunes Store.

Happy New Year!
