In Digest #14-19, Christopher Coolidge wrote "Like them or not, ZZ Top is
the one band who's been together longest with the original lineup without
breaking up or changing personnel at any time."

Sorry Chris, but the Four Tops, who originally formed as the Four Aims, had
the same four man line up from 1954 through to 1997, when founding member
Lawrence Peyton sadly died. That's 43 years - half a decade more than
Messers Hill, Gibbons and Beard have managed to date!

And I'll bet there's another one out there somewhere too...

Am I the only one that checked this out? First of all, it's a little
weird, with unaswered snippets of questions which make me think the
page wasn't totally up when I saw it, or when JP posted... That said,
this intriguing (!!!) snippet was within:

  Getting back together?
2nd May 2008, Andy Partridge announced during a short interview with
Mojo, that XTC will be back together before the end of the year ...

ANYONE? ANY NEWS OF THIS????

ChalkAll,

Further (not very easily accomplished) research gleaned an actual
answer:

Getting back together?

Q. 2nd May 2008, Andy Partridge announced during a short interview
with Mojo, that XTC will be back together before the end of the year
and touring for the first time since 1982. This is astonishing news to
fans of the band who, whilst knowing that Partridge was speaking to
Dave Gregory again, never thought XTC would play live ever again after
so many dormant years.

Any weight to the claim?

Kev

A. Well me old Kev, somebody has got some crossed wires going for sure
and what a mistake to read anything on Thickipedia. NO,we wont be
getting back together again for any purpose in any forseeable future
as long as I've still got a hole in my arse.

How do these rumours start? I suppose it's from the same source that
gave the world snippets like "Andy wears armour and has a collection
of more than 50 bycycles" (which journalists have actually asked me
about in all seriousness).

Sleep well. Andy

Sorry if any of you had your hopes momentaruly raised... If it seems
too good to be true....

Anyone who says "I hate ZZ Top," with or without the obscene adverb,
hasn't listened to "Waitin' For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago"
recently. No posing, no cheap sunglasses, no sharp dressing, no dames,
no street rods, and no synths -- just blue men playing the whites, and
nearly on a par with the Messrs. Allman, Betts, Cropper, Dunn,
Clapton, and Mayall.

Oh, and I don't think the rest of the band ever sued their drummer for
"making too much money." Chris Coolidge is right: Zero personnel
changes since 1970 is a remarkable achievement. Maybe there's
something to be said for overdosing on barbecue instead of smack,
crack, and meth.

I don't own any post-1981 ZZ Top releases, but some of their early
stuff is essential. Granted, it got overplayed, but "Heard It On The
X," along with Wall Of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio," nicely encapsulates
the adolescent pleasure of surfing for distant radio stations after
dark. With an ordinary AM receiver, I mean, not shortwave. This was
particularly rewarding here in the American southwest, where signals
from as far away as Chicago and Mexico City rode in strong on the
still dry air, but "DX-surfing" could be done anywhere -- maybe even
by future Chalkhillians throughout North America, Europe, and
Australia.

"Country Jesus hillbilly blues, that's where I learned my licks" -- I
think that line would make Andy Himself crack a smile.
