Hope you're all well. It's XTC-quiet these days but it's scary when I
realise I've been on this list for over a decade.

Well I'd like to suggest to Andy that he write a rock opera--yes a ROCK
OPERA (or even one of those Broadway Andrew Lloyd Webber things). He'd do a
great job. Andy returns to many common themes in his work so I don't think
it would be very hard to assemble one with a couple of new tunes thrown in
for good measure.

Thanks to Todd for the great 'Then She Appeared' interview.  It pretty much
confirmed my theoretical chain of events between 'Difficult Age', 'Then She
Appeared' and 'Goodbye Humanosaurus', especially now recording dates confirm
'Age' was the first recorded.  It's just a shame Andy isn't prouder of the
finished song.

A thousand times no!  How can a simplified band arrangement compete with
that level of studio craft?  How empty would the arrangement sound?  Can you
imagine the unrest the standard gig poseurs would cause when confronted by
'Mermaid Smiled'?

I actually think it's the incredible attention to detail in 'Skylarking'
that has kept it fresh to my ears for 21 years.  I've recently figured out
that i listen to music by following layers of simultaneous melody - the more
at once, the more exciting it is to my ears and keeps my interest level high
through subsequent listens.

To my ears, 'Skylarking' is a perfect album for interesting, detailed
multiple layers of craft - and has outlasted contemporary recordings I was
obsessed with at the time but never listen to now, like 'True Stories',
'Life's Rich Pageant', 'Hounds Of Love', 'They Might Be Giants' and 'Liberty
Bell and the Black Diamond Express'.

Why have I never grown bored of it?  Why has it outlasted everything and has
stayed constant in my life?  Will I still be listening to it in another 21
years?  Why have I only heard one album since then that's created a similar
'out-of-time' obsessiveness to detail effect in me?  (That would be the
self-titled album by 'Great Lakes Myth Society', 2005 - and whose new album,
'Compass Rose Bouquet', has traded in that album's chilly winterscape for a
'Skylarking'-style warm summer's day, and is highly recommended for lovers
of intellectual folk-rock music).
