Folks,

Just a note for your information. Some so-called spam filters are
refusing to deliver Chalkhills because of "obscene language". What
the fuck is that about? Perhaps it's because some spam is for porn
sites and contains "bad words". Or perhaps the spam filters are
trying to enforce somebody's idea of acceptable language. Or perhaps
the spam filters are written by lamebrains. I don't know.

Do with this information what you will. Just do it while we talk
about XTC.

Oh yeah. Them.

Speaking of XTC, Ben Gott pointed out that the Nouvelle Vague album
with the cover of Making Plans for Nigel is now available on iTunes.
And Ben Gott's covers of XTC and Andy Partridge songs are now
available from Loquacious Music.

I also discovered that the very strange "Polish" flexi discs thought
to be issued by MOHO records are actually on the Russian label BudKon.
MOHO is "mono" as in "monaural" in Cyrillic. Serious collectors
believe the flexi discs may have been manufactured in Poland, but the
label is definitely of Russian origin. Thanks to Paul Hilcoff,
maintainer of the Husker Du discography, for much of this information.

Fuzzies on the horizon...

Hi
Today is the 1st of February.
I opened up Apple's QuickTime Movie Player while connected to the
internet and was presented with an Apple link to an XTCidearecords
quicktime page. This page has a link (blue button) that allows you to:

*read lyrics and view photos while streaming audio* through quicktime
... a pleasant surprise!

heres the link:
http://www.xtcidearecords.co.uk/qt/xtcqta.htm

Maybe someone has already spotted this.
Worth repeating the news since its fun.

>>Anyway, he mentioned in passing that he was just making his annual
Guitargonauts calendar, featuring 12 of the instruments from his
collection. "How many of those do you do?" I asked. "Oh, just the
one," came the reply.<<

Now I totally want one of those calendars. Any way to convince Dave to
upload the pictures to something like cafepress.com and have them print
it out per order?

The XTC site has a new digital download for "Where Did the Ordinary People
Go?" which is 0.50 pounds (forgot how to make the fancy "L", sorry about the
American keyboard) and sounds gorgeous.

The first hint of trouble came when I tried to play it, as it opened up Real
Media (and for some reason, I couldn't turn off the animation) instead of
CORE Media (which I normally use). Then I realized it was an AAC file
instead of MP3.

A little research turned up the fact that apparently some people can convert
these to MP3 using something on iTunes, unless they bought the file with
iTunes! Apparently AAC files are encoded so you can only burn them to CD a
certain number of times, and iTunes wants repeat sales.

Well, this wasn't very helpful as I could not burn AACs to CD at all! So I
had to download a converter (the imTOO Audio Encoder, if you're wondering)
which did the job nicely, though I had to use the "LAME" encoder (and I am
told not everyone has this, but apparently it can be downloaded from
somewhere).

Finally, there is the fact that changing the song to MP3 introduced some
audio loss which could not be prevented even though I set it to 320kb and
44KHz. (FLAC would be best, but almost none of my software supports it!)

So. If you download this great song of Colin's, you're probably in for a bit
of work to get it changed into an MP3. Is it worth the effort? Definitely.
However, if they make me go through something even more convoluted next
time, they might as well retire.

I'm really encouraged by the last two songs to emerge. I like CM's
latest a lot (Where Did The Ordinary People Go?) - and I haven't been
able to say that since about Nonsuch. Also really loved Spiral.

On another t(r)ack, do people agree that the the quintessential XTC
moment is the squirting, discordant guitar at the end of the chorus of
'Love At First Sight' immediately after Moulding sings those words? It
is tangential perfection - the thing that makes XTC unique. Anyone
know who thought it up and who played it?

Cheers
