An indulgence here, hope you don't mind.  I have a beautiful niece,
Tahnee, who lives in Hampstead, London-town.  She sent me a CD of
her favourites as a little gift for Christmas, the usual suspects:
Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, The Killers, Futureheads, Scissor
Sisters, Razorlight, Black Eyed Peas, you name it.  A pretty good
comp as it happens.

But listening to it, I was reminded of how much XTC seems to have
influenced all these Johnny-come-latelies.  So I made a compilation
of music for her from our boys - just the one CD.  Here's the
tracklisting.  What do you think?

The other week I was talking to Dave about his somewhat neglected
Guitargonauts site: www.guitargonauts.com .

Anyway, he mentioned in passing that he was just making his annual
Guitargonauts calendar, featuring 12 of the instruments from his
collection. "How many of those do you do?" I asked. "Oh, just the
one," came the reply.

So, naturally I asked if he would do one for me, and while he was at
it, would he like to do one so we could give it away in a little
competition here on The Hill. (I think we'd rather have run the compo
from Guitargonauts- but that would be too complicated.)

Some huffing and puffing later, the calendars arrived, accompanied by
a typically meticulous Dave note, including this comment: "Owing to
the appalling cost of consumables, the 'Limited Edition' must end
here at the grand total of three (I have the other one!)."

</willy-waving>

Anyway, it's rather a nice thing. Lots of key guitar-related births,
deaths and anniversaries, and a guitar per month, photographed
outside Dave's shed. (Yes, he's got a shed too.)

It's not exactly hand-carved, having been made on Dave's computer,
but it is still a rather special thing. He certainly punched the hole
in the corner.

So, let's have a little competition.

Here are the questions:

1. What was Dave's first electric guitar, where did he get it and how
much did it cost?

2. What do these nicknames refer to, in the context of electric guitar?
a) the log
b) the snow-shovel
c) the frying pan

3. What was the name of the band Dave was in, immediately before
joining XTC?

And because they are so easy, I'm going to have a tie-breaker, to be
judged by a panel of experts (all right, me).

I'd like you to answer this question, in 25 words or fewer: What did
Dave bring to XTC?

(Don't ring him up and ask him. That would be cheating, as well as
being embarrassing.)

Swindon radio in December '05.  It is absolutely fantastic and
typically hilarious.  Yet very revealing and informative.

Regrettably, the music tracks Andy chose are excised largely, but
the whole thing is so VERY good!

If anyone wants to make a viable reciprocal offer, call on me and I'll
see what I can do for you.  But you won't get off lightly.

It's priceless stuff - Andy is well and truly on fire!!!!!
