So. If you download this great song of Colin's, you're probably in for
a bit of work to get it changed into an MP3.

Mine came in from the XTC site as an MP3 just fine.

OK, I'm not a cyber-genius. I'll admit it. First, I thought you had to buy
the Apple Venus box to be able to download the new songs? True? I have no
clue. Anyone who can give me some assistance on how to download the three
tunes and burn them, I'd appreciate it!

Don't know if it's been posted here yet, but the Who have put up an
officially sanctioned site, http://www.longliverock.org

I've downloaded two DVDs and two audio discs, great stuff!

Hi Folks,

AUS$1.08 for Colin's 'Where Did the Ordinary People Go' - an absolute
bargain my friends! A dead-cert top-level Colin track. For those of you,
who like eriC and I couldn't play m4a files natively in their mp3 players
etc I'd like to also recommend 'Free Mp3 Wma Converter'.

http://koyotstar.free.fr/indexEn.html

I found it via cNet and I'm quite happy with it. If you have dialup access
to the internet the installation of the optional Wma codec takes about 10 or
so minutes - but is worth it IMHO. I converted WDTOPG to Mp3 and Wma using
VBR 50 and the quality is fine, no audible conversion glitches that my
abused ears can detect.

Oh, and it's free! What can I say?

I also really love 'Spiral'. Some have made comparisons to 'Playground', but
I feel 'Spiral' just pips it as a killer track. I love the track breakdown
before the ending - it does it for me. 'Say It' is a nice enough track but
isn't a fave Colin number in my book.

What else? Hmmmm.....

Oh yes! Obscene language (There is no Language in our Dungs?). I was
emailing a mate and his work's lexical blocker started bouncing my emails.
Apparantly his Boss (he works in the tech area) laid down a very arbitrary
list of blocked terms. I asked him to fire a copy off to my account for a
looksee. OK, quite a lot of those should be blocked, some made no sense to
me & some were just weird. The fun part was my mate had quietly excised sh!t
from the list. As he said, there's just so much of it in the corporate
correspondence that he's subjected to that he felt it was only fair that
people can email it too. Way to go, Big Fella!

I'll get out of your way now.

Andrew Gowans

BTW - anyone like a giggle? Drop me a line if you'd like to look at the
block list.

Hey folks,

The recent release of "Where Did the Ordinary People Go?" reminded me
that there were so many wonderful songs from the "Nonsvch" sessions
that never saw the light of day. So let's open the blinds and expose
(rawr!) them for all to see.

I've placed demos for Colin's "It Didn't Hurt A Bit," "Where Did the
Ordinary People Go?," and Andy's "Always Winter Never Christmas" in
my Public folder on .Mac. E-mail me off list and I'll tell you how
to access them. I know I've got a copy of the demo for Colin's "Car
Out of Control" somewhere, and I'll bet I can even dig up the
original version of Andy's "Rocket" from the Ernest Noyes Brookings
tribute CD that Sean Slade did.

Spread the wealth, feel the love!

David Edwards wrote in the last 'Hills:

"On another t(r)ack, do people agree that the the quintessential XTC moment
is the squirting, discordant guitar at the end of the chorus of 'Love At
First Sight' immediately after Moulding sings those words? It is tangential
perfection - the thing that makes XTC unique."

Yeah, I would agree. That and the opening riff to Sergeant Rock, which is
not dissimilar. But funnily enough, when I think of the boys (and I do
several times a day), the sonic signature that flashes across my head is the
opening riff to ELLA GURU, which of course is by Captain Beefheart, but
first time I heard it was the XTC version on the B-side of Mayor of
Simpleton back in 1988.

Fast and bulbous, I'm sure you'll agree.

For subscribers of Rhapsody or the Real Audio equivalent, you will see that
Andy's albums on the Ape Record label is now available for 'download' or
stream from said music service. Included are all of the Fuzzy Warbles,
Andy's "Through the Hill" record, as well as that Orpheus THING that Andy
worked on with Peter Blegvad.
The bonus feature is an "exclusive" interview with Andy Partridge wherein he
discusses such topics as the whole Fuzzy Warble project, why he lives where
he does, being 'married' to Colin, and "Plans for a New XTC Album." Don't
get excited, he doesn't have any plans right now.
The only part that I listened to was 'Plans'. I'm too busy raising the kids
to listen to an entire interview. (It's all I can do to have a little Black
Sea playing in the background. I often have to wait my turn on the trusty
changer just to spin a disc or two of mine. Bloody Disney Princesses!) The
quality of the interview is not great. It was obviously done over the
phone, if you don't subscribe to Rhapsody it probably wouldn't be worth you
while. One could find someone who does subscribe and ask them to burn a
copy for you.
If you don't subscribe you may want to consider. Since I started spending
my paper and iron more on diapers and dolls, and less on cds I have found
that one way to listen to what is out there is to subscribe to a service
like Rhapsody. What I like about it, is that I can listen to a record
before I decide to purchase it, AND I can listen to stuff that I kinda like,
but not enough to lay down the dough for shiny the plastic circle. What I
hate about it is that I cannot directly download to my hard drive. I have
to burn it to disc and then rip to the drive. I rarely purchase music from
Rhapsody for that reason.
Well, right now I must go. I have a four-year-old "ghost" trying to scare
me out of my seat.
Cheers, Poppy in Philly

This Friday's list of reader-suggested songs in The Guardian will be on the
subject of fire.

A couple of readers have already suggested Set Myself on Fire and Great Fire
on the blog. I've added Sacrificial Bonfire.

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/culturevulture/archives/2006/02/10/con_fuoco.html

The top ten will be published on Friday.
