Hello again, people of the collines,

I checked out that Fano site. First I was amazed my work computer
LET me check the site, but then I was much MORE amazed at what I saw.
Holy Mother of XTC Collectibles -- that thing is simply gorgeous!
Makes me want to learn guitar!

Thanks for sharing, Erik! I wish I had $5200 in spare change...

Au revoir,

Jeff

What a beaut! If only I had a spare $5000!

And I hadn't heard Andy's "I'm Playing My Fano" song, but hey, it counts
as new XTC material in my book -- great little song!

**Entering Tourette's-free zone**

A Chalksibling recently mentioned hearing XTC on an
ideologically outspoken American radio network. This
observation was greeted with silence, which I take to
be sound of every other Chalksibling nodding his head,
thinking "that's nice," and moving on. There has been
no eruption of Tourette syndrome in this instance;
this time nobody told the writer to "shut the
[obscenity] up." This is good. Of course it doesn't
prove much, because National Public Radio is solidly
within the comfort zone of most American Chalkers, but
I take it as a promising development nevertheless.
Perhaps benign silence will also greet the next report
of hearing XTC on an ideologically outspoken network
or show which happens not to be on the "approved"
list.

Last year I expressed my hope that Chalkhills could
become a Tourette's-free zone, and I got tut-tutted
for utilizing overly-provocative terminology. Soon
afterward, another Chalksibling, who went on at
eyeball-glazing length in defense of objects Andy
Partridge is famously of the belief should be melted,
was told, not to take it elsewhere along with his
detractors, but to "shut the [obscenity] up."

Golly, I think my terminology was right on the mark. I
repeat my hope that Chalkhills becomes a
Tourette's-free zone.

Musical thought out of nowhere: How long before George
"I Gotta Cobra Snake For a Necktie" Thorogood will be
enlisted to help pitch the diet supplement Hoodia?

I still want to place my extremely belated Merry
Christmas/Happy Hanuramakwanstice "card," or rant,
which includes a tribute to the great Lalo Guerrero
and references to his buddies Los Lobos and Ry Cooder
-- plus nine, count 'em, nine, images of Muhammad --
in the hands of as many Chalksibs as are willing to
email me off-Digest and give me a real-world mailing
address. I mailed the 2004-'05 rant to twelve of you
and I want to surpass that total this time.

>Here's an interesting tidbit from the latest blog
entry of Mike Keneally:

"Marco [Minnemann] also played on a couple of the
demos which Andy Partridge and I made together in
2003. Recently I heard those demos again for the
first time in at least two years, then subsequently I
got a phone message from Andy in which I learned that
he had just done the same thing, so looks like it's
time to return to THAT crime scene. Very fun."

First I visit the Fano guitar site, which has Dave
Gregory mentioning he has been working with Mike
Keneally, then I read this.

So Mike "accidently" has Dave over when he is working
with Andy, Collin arrives with some beer, and we have
an XTC album half done!!! Mike as a guest guitarist,
how off the wall that would be... I love that Skunk
song he wrote, very cool bass line.

I can dream,

Hey Music Lovers;

I've been put to task by some of my soccer teammates to do a compilation of
songs about or reference soccer/football in someway. I have a couple, like
XTC's Senses Working Overtime, Robbie Williams, Del Amitri and The Referees
alphabet by Half man Half Biscuit.

Your suggestions are appreciated! And may result in a kick ass (pun
intended) compilation.

Goal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, come on: This isn't a house and it was just a suggestion. Are you
seriously meaning to say that no constructive criticism of the digest
should ever be offered?

I don't think *anyone* wants this list to become a forum. But most other
lists I'm on offer the option of individual mail vs. digest--makes
everyone happy.

May I participate and comment on some of the contents of a fine Digest
# 12/18, please? Got nuthin' much better to do so here goes, please
indulge me, and I hope my comments are helpful, valued somewhat, and
suitably sugar-coated (tee-hee). And there IS XTC content-

From: "Danny 'da freeq' Phipps" <phipps117@earthlink.net>
Subject: so poetic!

  damn almighty!!
isn't he just the most POETIC thing?? god, his wording is so
sugarcoated and sweet, it actually makes my teeth hurt to read 'em!
maybe he can send some of his "quirkdom" to the oil companies and
miraculously reduce the price of our gasoline!! we can then look upon
him as "the new messiah!"
  (( *** ... a bed is creaking as the new messiah comes! *** ))
hmmm ........ now i'm wondering if he's wearing any SHORTS under those
levi's?

  >>> Is this an attempt at IRONY? Or are you actually being nice and
conciliatry, and holding out the olive branch? And FWIW, I try to
avoid skid-marks on me dacks. And for what further it's worth, I
always found Freeq Phipps to be one of the more entertaining and
nicely-natured contributors to these hallowed Hills. I love it (and
feel affinity) when he occasionally makes a passionate appeal for more
new XTC music. Only wish his enthusiastic pleas could penetrate to
the inner sanctum, because Danny tends to echo most of our sentiments,
doesn't he?

I agree with Paul Culnane - the Australian Pete Murray
is good. He's playing at the Shepherd's Bush Empire in
June. I'll be there.

>>>Rory, get prepared to widen that grin. Hope you enjoy the show.
Please report back to us, or just me if that's more appropriate and if
you'd care to-

Subject: Re: Digest format.

For the love of Stu Sutcliffe does everthing have to be immediate with
you people?

  >>>Good points Mole, about digest formats and stuff. Ta. Hey, a
friend just gave me a huge framed portrait of Stu Sutcliffe done by
Astrid Kircherr. It's just too beautiful. I'm gonna mount the
picture over my bed. It will replace my huge pic of Aladdin Sane,
that's now gonna go into the entrance foyer.

From: "Wayne Klein" <wtdk123@msn.com>
Subject: All That Jazz

No real XTC news or discussion here...just wondering for those that
purchased the Apple Box if the sound quality is significantly better than
the previous editions. I would doubt it but you never know...

>>> Here's my impression Wayne. I think the Apple Box edition is
slightly, er, "phatter", it's got more depth and sonic thickness.
Juicier. Maybe I'm letting my imagination get away with me, but I did
an A-B comparison between the box discs and the original discs (I'm
running the UK Cooking Vinyl CD pressing of AV1 studio version; the
Jap Pony Canyon version of "Wasp Star" - art booklet included; the
US TVT of "Homespun" and the Pony Canyon of "Homegrown" - extra
tracks). The Apple Box stuff is definitely mastered louder, and has
more balls.

As you'll glean, original mastering for AV1 was by Tim Young at
Metropolis in London. Wasp Star original was mastered by the
illustrious Bob Ludwig in Portland, Maine. Tim Young and Ian Cooper
tackle the demo discs. These credits remain intact with the Apple
Box, but, shivers, it still sounds better, I reckon, so enjoy. And
you get a bonus replica peacock feather, yay!

Whatever happened to George "Porky" Peckham? (check the inscriptions
in the run-out grooves of yer old XTC vinyl, trainspotters)-

I enjoyed what other people said - sometimes a Chalkhills bulletin
can be really magic and can inspire. Thank you! But for now, I'll
grab me coat.
