Belinda opinded quite rightly:

"Given the above, isn't there the space on TV for a better more in
depth music quiz? TV Executives and commissioning editors are now in their
forties and some are even (shock horror) fifties (and to a certain extent
this is reflected in some of the programmes we're seeing - tho not
necessarily reality shows which nevertheless are beginning to decline in
numbers of new ones, only to stack up on day time cable channels for ever!)
- and so they may be keen to consider it. A Saturday tea-time sort of slot
comes to mind. Discuss! But remember, formats are everything, as Endemol
the makers/creators of Big Brother will tell you."

Yet, baby, consider this: ...and I'm in between Andy and Dave re age,
you know, it's really only relative (in more ways than one). Please
don't write the old fogeys off. I for one might be kidding myself,
but if you reverse my birth-age, that's how I think and act. This
year might be different if you apply the same formula, but it will
still be applicable with my friend Ben (from this parish) with whom I
enjoy a great rapport, and with whom we're gonna rock your world
together with our new forthcoming CD!

Age is relative and ultimately irrelevant. You can be a guy and wear
29" waist Levi's and get away with it, even if your hair is going
grey. Just let it rock!

Brings a whole new meaning to "Holly Up On Poppy", doesn't it? Ooops...

With love
Paul Pan

cap, as it were. add my list to the list then --

01. xtc: english settlement
02. the beatles: abbey road
03. yes: tales from topographic oceans
04. elton john: goodbye yellow brick road
05. genesis: a trick of the tail
06. spock's beard: v
07. porcupine tree: signify
08. pink floyd: animals
09. ayreon: the human equation
10. nick drake: pink moon

this would just about cover every mood i'd experience while being
alone on a desert island .... for who knows how long?

bring on the shipwreck then!!

SoundClick www.soundclick.com seems to be a lot of home musicians'
site of choice. Unlimited free uploads, and they recently added
"stations", similar to how mp3.com used to have.

I wouldn't call it "most happening," but Amazon.com has a Digital Music
Network service:

Has anyone heard The Futureheads? If your favorite XTC period is Drums and
Wires, run right now to the closest record store and pick this one up. The
guitar chords and tone, the punctuated beats, the background vocals and
melodies are classic XTC, only not just a pale imitation, this is done
RIGHT. They also do a cover of Kate Bush's Hounds Of Love. Energy,
passion, melody...all that good stuff!

Nothing really to do with that speciific issue but the Canadians have
it all cased ...
checkout www.newmusicccanada.com and it's mothership www.cbcradio3.com
... www.justconcerts.com too ...

NewMusicCanada is an index of 7000+ Canadian indie music artists,
JustConcerts.com is an audio-bucket of
concerts and studio sessions that CBC records across Canada on an
on-going basis. The recent 101st edition of CBCradio3.com's web-mag
is an impressive, cool compendium of the alternative scene much suited
to the tastes and styles appreciated by Chakhillians I'd suggest.
Check out the achives for last week's issue ...

All soon to be heart and soul of a channel on the Sirius satellite
radio service if our regulatory agency sees fit. Stay tuned ...

Back on planet XTC ... lovin' the Milk & Honey Band ... also havin' a
giggle or two with FW 5|6 ...

XTC-ly,

I finally put together my top ten for 2004. I figure it's OK to be late with
this since so many people post it in November and December before the year
is offically over.

1. Everyone is Here- The Finn Brothers
Neat concept album about family, mortality and perfect harmonies
2. Hope and Fears- Keane
Great little album. Now if they could only get a guitar player for those
moments when they really need to rock out. Their unique make up does give
them a unique sound although clearly there are echoes of other bands there.
3. Smile -Brian Wilson
Great album with occasionally pretentious lyrics decorating first class
melodies. It's a pity that it took this album to get Capitol in gear to try
and assemble the Beach Boys sessions into a coherent album.
4. The Delivery Man-Elvis Costello and the Imposters
Unlike a lot of folks I did not find this disappointing at all.
5. Fuzzy Warbles 5
I felt that #6 was full of filler although there was a handful of great
little tunes there, too. Just not enough to make this list.
6. Cloud Nine- George Harrison
Best reissue of George's solo catalog for 2004 and one of his best albums
(despite the excessive production touches on a few tunes).
7. Ray (Original Soundtrack)-Ray Charles
A great collection of previous released tunes that shows how Charles
stretched the boundaries of gospel, R&B and soul music.
8. The Capitol Years Volume 1-The Beatles
Yep, like lots of other Americans I prefer some of their American releases
to their British ones. "Meet The Beatles" is still superior to "With The
Beatles" all these years later.
9. Good News for People Who Love Bad News-Modest Mouse
Pretty cool stuff although it reminds me of The Kinks for some reason (not
necessarily a bad thing).
10. Final Straw-Snow Patrol
Solid riffs, nice warm voice, good melodies. Who could ask for more?

Hello Chalkheads

Jackson, in Chalkhills #11-5 asked us about our DID's. Here are my
selections:

1) XTC - Skylarking
2) The Beatles - Revolver
3) Leo Delibes - Lakme
4) The Cure - Disintegration
5) Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
6) Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain
7) American Music Club - California
8) Prince - Sign 'O' The Times
9) Judas Priest - Point of Entry
10) Neil Young - Freedom

I found these ten very difficult to come up with and I labored over leaving
out other favorites from Nine Inch Nails (Pretty Hate Machine), Radiohead
(The Bends), Chet Baker (Chet), Bob Marley & The Wailers (Rastaman Vibration
or Uprising), Tori Amos (Little Earthquakes), Jeff Buckley (Grace). I could
go on and on and on...

Best to all,

Tv

There's a band reviewed in The Guardian today called Towers of London.

The review says they get their name from London high rise buildings, but it
also says the sound like the Sex Pistols, Blondie and the New York Dolls so
I'm not so sure.

Things have been a little quiet in these parts, and I haven't posted
in a dog's age, so I might as well weigh in on the Desert Island
thingy.

Jackson wrote:

no particular order) sheesh....kind a shows my age:
p.s.best of/anthologies are no fair....

1) Jim Hendrix - Smash Hits<

Erm, that's a best-of, son.
Steve wrote:

>Magical Mystery Tour is my Beatles pick (with all the singles added-
strawberry fields etc)<

That's cheating and you know it, Steve. Still, in that incarnation it
does trump Pepper, if not Rubber Soul or Revolver.

>Diamond Dogs - David Bowie isn't mentioned much here."Candidate/Sweet
Thing" is Art-Rockish.<

My hero. It's heartening to see such a maligned album championed,
particularily in these pages. If it were not for "Rock 'n' Roll With
Me", this would be a perfect (if unpleasant) album. In my books
though, "Big Brother" is the highlight - I still get chills.

So here goes, and bear in mind that this list has changed very little
in the last dozen years or so, as I, too, show my age...

1. The Kinks - Are the Village Green Preservation Society
2. The Beatles - Revolver
3. XTC - Black Sea
4. Sparks - Propaganda
5. David Bowie - Ziggy
6. Elvis Costello - Armed Forces
7. The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle
8. Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
9. Robyn Hitchcock - I Often Dream of Trains
10. Stevie Wonder - Innervisions

Eeek! That looks awfully conventional, for the most part. At least I
didn't put the bloody Velvets in there...

Riley asked:

"I have a question:

Who are XTC's favorite new (1997+) artist/bands?

Sorry if this is a tough one."

I know that Partridge really likes the power pop band the Nines and has been
writing with the lead singer.
His APE label also signed the Milk and Honey band so I suppose he likes them
too.
