Nice tune with an Andy influence - or not. Still, a nice tune.

anyone heard sir Macca's latest opus? I'm hearing strangely positive
rumblings....

Um... OK! Gee, I sure miss them. (I refuse to buy Wuzzy Furballs or Andy's
demos - the studio is where they get things polished up and perfected, and
outtakes are outtakes for a reason.)
Since I lead such a rich interior life, I've projected that the next Andy
and Colin (I miss Dave, too) record will contain a whole bunch of songs with
allegorical references to toy soldiers, buildings collapsing, floods, spies,
secret agents, various apocolypses (is that even a word?), etc. It will
also namecheck several previous local deities, maybe Shakespearean
characters, or other archetypal beings. After all, the divorce shouldn't be
much of a topic now (if it is, he's got other issues), and his daughter is
no longer going to make a subject like 'Holly Up On Poppy'.
It will have a shitload of Andy chords* (which in terms of music theory,
have questionable parentage, but he'll use them because he likes how they
sound), and a lot of key changes. Maybe some style-level parody, too - the
C&W twang to signify the ugly American Cowboy, some Kinks-like pop to
signify the British, or maybe some strings, a Sgt. Pepper-ish horn
fanfare...
I mean, we've already heard from the band on previous socio-political
topics, so we know they're up for it. Why not?
I was going to call it 'Son Of President Kill', but due to Andy's pattern of
using a phrase from a lyric of a previous record to title the next, this one
will be called... um... 'Empires Crumbling'.
Unless Andy is actually too tired to be angry anymore, in which case, just
another batch of great songs about whatever. Colin's songs will be about
domestic life in the face of global warming, terrorism, or just plain
getting older. They'll be simpler but concentrated, like he's been getting
lately.
Due out about half-past three years from now. Or later, if they haven't
started yet.

Kevin
(I call them as I see them, and if I don't see them, I can make them up)

*examples abound: the last chord of the cycle on 'That Wave' (Eb/B as V to
Em7b5 as I); the first chord of 'Harvest Festival' (F#7 with 3rd and 4th in
it, now sometimes referred to in jazz use as a 'tension 10' chord); etc.,
etc., check your newspaper for showtimes in your area

in chalkhills digest, vol. 11, no. 48 .... the illustrious paul

to which i respond in kind:

paul ... i couldn't agree more, dude! being a longtime beatles fan(atic)
myself, this double-disc release has always held a special place in my
top 3 favorites list. ("abbey road" and "revolver" in the top two spaces,
respectively) there is so much diversity on the white album release with
all the individual compositions yet the overall flow of the track-sequencing
is like pouring warm water over your body - IT WORKS!! these guys (both
collective and apart) can do no wrong in my eyes (and ears). they hold
top honors in my alltime favorite group category alongside xtc and yes.

love (indeed) is all you need ....

thanks, paul, for sharing a musical opinion here that could not be truer!

/danny (... a north carolina beatles fan)

This is sheer genius, honestly. And someone even did a version of "Senses
Working Overtime" (anyone on this list?)...just scroll down the list.

Check out "Anarchy in the U.K." too, among others -- too funny.

The venerable John Relph put forward this:

Normally I would not have let some of these messages into the digest, but
since I let Mr. Pastula respond after the cutoff, in the spirit of fairness
I have allowed these messages through, too. Was that constructive?
Probably not. Should you respond to them? Probably not. Let's let this
topic die, please.

This same situation arose on another list, and Greg Ingber wrote:

I have been on music/pop culture lists that have just been decimated
by precisely this sort of off-topic political stuff. When fans of
[INSERT ARTIST HERE] feel like they have to leave the list because
they don't share the politics of a majority of vocal listmembers...
in my opinion, THAT's when the community is dead.

I fully agree. (On the other hand, things sure got exciting around here.)

>>>Yep, pretty interesting and lively. Okay. I for one am not
normally given to discussing politics, religion, manners, philosophy
and all that kinda stuff. To me, that's a bit more private.
Particularly doing it in a forum essentially devoted to a pop group.
Y'know, go somewhere else for your fill of all that. Be my guest!

That said, and without wishing to blow a bogus trumpet, the way
Relphie assembled a recent edition of this digest, it had two big long
diatribes, followed by my simple quote from Hari Georgeson. I thought
that "sat" really well. And thank you Mr Cuthbert!

After all, hey, let's try to be kind to each other, can't we? F**ck
that's all we've got, eh? While it all falls apart around us,
contemplate this beauty (XTC content):

"I'd smile so much
My face would crack in two
Then you could fix it
With your kissing glue
I'd like that
Yes, I'd like that!"

Meant to feel

Other Things:

-we don't always floss our teeth as often as we should.
-we don't eat enough fruits and vegtables for a well balanced diet
-we also don't get enough sleep. Many Americans lack a full night's
rest and are therefore grumpy when warmongering and or dischargining
 firearms at each other
-and we certainly don't listen to XTC enough

Here's a pleasant little ditty in video form from Feist. See if you
don't agree that she seems to be channelling Andy a bit, consciously
or otherwise.
