The Meeting Place 2005 - *Gathering Update* Since the topic doesn't seem closed after all... White stripes King For A Day (I Dub Thee Sir Mix) Administrivia: Normally I would not have let some of these messages into the digest, but since I let Mr. Pastula respond after the cutoff, in the spirit of fairness I have allowed these messages through, too. Was that constructive? Probably not. Should you respond to them? Probably not. Let's let this topic die, please. This same situation arose on another list, and Greg Ingber wrote: I have been on music/pop culture lists that have just been decimated by precisely this sort of off-topic political stuff. When fans of [INSERT ARTIST HERE] feel like they have to leave the list because they don't share the politics of a majority of vocal listmembers... in my opinion, THAT's when the community is dead. I fully agree. (On the other hand, things sure got exciting around here.) Samuel Johnson and I call Bullshit: 57. Refutation of Bishop Berkeley After we came out of the church, we stood talking for some time together of Bishop Berkeley's ingenious sophistry to prove the nonexistence of matter, and that every thing in the universe is merely ideal. I observed, that though we are satisfied his doctrine is not true, it is impossible to refute it. I never shall forget the alacrity with which Johnson answered, striking his foot with mighty force against a large stone, till he rebounded from it -- "I refute it *thus.*" -- Boswell: Life of Johnson Harrison "http://www.samueljohnson.com/topics.html" Sherwood

They do not magically influence a culture to begin killing itself, nor does their removal, confiscation, or unnecessary regulation suddenly make everyone start to behave.>> No, Americans are the problem. American culture is completely entangled with gun ownership and autmobile culture. This has led to the current state of fossil-fule addiction and warmongering, among other things. If you're not sure about that, try to imagine an America in which gasoline is $6-7/gallon, few own automobiles, NASCAR is outlawed, most existing cars get 60+/MPG, and alternative fuels are in a high state of evolution. (I can't envision it yet either, folks.) Even if the government got behind it (it won't), the American people (who have been reduced mostly to consumers now) would not. It's dumb chance that Henry Ford decided that gasoline would be the best thing to power his invention. What does this have to do with guns? To my reality, it is all part of the American psyche. A society that prizes guns doesn't mind using them one bit. There is little difference between the man who owns a gun and the soldiers who are killing and being killed in Iraq. America is a gun culture. Right now, W is using the collective firepower of the US military to get access to the Arab world... which is where the oil is... ...and round goes the wheel. I love freedom, George. I'll say no more about this here. This is for XTC. I'm not checking off of this list. I've been here for about 10 years, and I'll have to transcribe the chords to the next XTC recording, when it comes. Kevin Brunkhorst (BTW, I grew up in an American home where guns were common; my father is a champion trapshooter, and I could bulls-eye a regulation target from 40 yards with a 20-guage at age 12. I believe guns do more harm than good, and Americans love them way too much to be healthy.) Music Department St Francis Xavier University http://www.stfx.ca http://www.kevinbrunkhorst.com

This three day festival includes entertainment, trips and all around ecstacy (pun intended!) One great highlight of the weekend features an auction of XTC created, related and inspired goods. All proceeds of this auction, along with all profits from the weekend are to be split between two charities near and dear to the XTC heart. The MS Society and Diabetes UK. To see these items beforehand, you can visit the official Gathering website: http://www.xtcthemeetingplace2005.co.uk/ Click on the Auction Items link. For those of you who are not able to attend the Gathering, write-in bids for items will be taken as well. Details of the bidding process can also be found on the website link. We hope to see you at the Gathering. David

And I have followed the advice of Spinal Tap. To whit: it's "beyond eleven". I haven't listened to this for ages, and it's just causing all sorts of musical orgasms. Simply, it's "The White Album". Oh, yummo! I'd like to recommend, (from my estranged beloved friend Benjy and beyond), to anybody else, go back and plug this one in... it is the conclusive definitive compendium of anything about pop and rock, anywhere. It caint be beat. Because (yeah), it's THE BEATLES, in a pure white cover. Love is all you need... PAUL
