Folks:

Hmmmm, so FUZZY WARBLES is being cut off at eight, eh? I'm sorry to hear
that, as I was sorry to hear that compiling these things somehow drove Andy
Partridge and Colin Moulding further apart. I'll totally enjoy these last
two and will keep an ear out for this WORKING OVERTIME compilation,
although I doubt that I'll buy it. My feeling is that Virgin is trying in
vain to squeeze as much mileage out of this back catalogue as possible with
no real new surprises. Of course, if this is a kind of upgrade of RAG AND
BONE BUFFET, perhaps I'll change my mind. Yet, I somehow feel as if I'm
betraying the artistic integrity of the band by supporting what sort of
trash comps that Birgin would release now. I won't rant anymore about it
all, but I don't know why record companies and video companies just don't
give up what they don't know how to promote! I'm sure there are other
labels that would love to issue all things XTC in terrific packages and
very fruitful reissue campaigns whose genius just might lure Andy and Colin
into giving it another try in much the same way as John Astley's obsessive
Who-mania eventually goaded Pete Townshend back into action and, hey, we
just never thought that there was that much good Who music out there!!

While in, oddly enough, the Virgin Megastore browsing through imports at
stuff I just can't afford these days but would love to steal, I noted a
special collector's edition of APPLE VENUS, VOL. I, but the package was the
only thing collectable about it. Otherwise, the same songs in the same
order were featured with no extras. Other than that, I now learn that a
good chunk of Kirsty MacColl's catalogue has now been reissued as imports
here in the U.S. as expanded imports. There is a double edition of TITANIC
DAYS!! And on top of all that, there is a 3-CD anthology that features
some of those coveted rareties and more! Guess it takes an artist's death
before the true collectables start flowing like water!

Good luck to Andy on FUZZIES, VOL. 7 & 8. I'll purchase my copies as soon
as they are announced on this list. We should applaude Andy's (and
Colin's) efforts. I only wish that artists of today were that obsessive
when they release limited editions of their new albums instead of giving us
tired documentaries!!

Oh, did anyone hear of an official expanded release of George Harrison's
CONCERT FOR BANGLA DESH? I don't know how they will tell this story in the
liner notes, but one just can't ignore a show with as large a roster. Note
that shortly afterward came an album called LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD!
It was a time when George learned some harsh cynnicism.

Kevin

Don Device is onto something. The hitchhiker's Guide
trailer
(http://hitchhikers.movies.go.com/)
does indeed share a certain tone and approach with the
artwork for GO2. However, this very funny movie
trailer, which has made watching other movie trailers
rather surreal and amusing, due to its accurate
mockery of the form, seems to come from the tone
Douglas Adams set for the Guide itself. The Guide
explains what things are and how to make the most of
them. Having a movie trailer that explains what movie
trailers are is very clever, and very DNA.

There are other similarities.

The Hitchhiker's Guide and XTC both emerged from late
seventies southern England.

They were both creating a sort of new genre with their
work, and some might call Barry-era XTC and Hitchhiker
"intelligent sci-fi comedy that takes a fresh look at
things".

Douglas Adams was a passionate, articulate atheist.
It's pretty easy to imagine him liking Dear God,
though I believe his favorite group was Pink Floyd.

Anyway, I saw the movie last night, and found parts of
it wonderful and parts of it wide of the mark. The
pace of things is a bit strange, and it's not like
other movies. There are certainly a few chuckles, and
a wonderful sense of aloha for the late great Douglas
Adams.

don't panic,

Jim Smart

this is from the liner notes of the Rhino reissue of
Elvis Costello's 'Trust'. I'm still trying to figure
out what XTC songs may have influenced the song.

Pancho PRXTCFAN

Trust (1981)

Preparation/Production/Perspective: "From a very
personal point of view, this was easily the most
drug-influenced record of my career. It was completed
close to a self-induced nervous collapse on a diet of
rough 'scrumpy' cider, gin and tonic, various powders,
only one of which was 'Andrew's Liver Salts,' and, in
the final hours, Johnnie Walker Black Label."

Choice Cut: "Although I might have risked a rebellion
among The Attractions to state so openly, I privately
modeled 'White Knuckles' on a couple of XTC records."

Reflections/Reactions/Reprisals: "Almost by accident,
the album arrived at a sound and tone that was very
true to my feelings at the time. The world it
described was the opposite of the album title in much
the same way that Get Happy!! had been less than
cheerful. It suggested a tarnished and disappointed
soul looking beyond the certainties of brash, arrogant
youth and early success and on into a life (and
possibly a career) in music."

Tired of waiting for some new XTC activity? I'd like
to whole heartedly recommend the cure: buy Mitch
Friedman's new "Purple Burt" album, available at:

http://www.mitchfriedman.com

My three year old and I love it all, from the googly
eyes on the case to the wonderful tracks spoken by a
narrator. You should get this CD if:
-you have a child.
-you are a child at heart
-you want something positive and upbeat and creative
-you like XTC

While Mitch's songs are very catchy (and wildly weird
and fun), there an unmistakable extra bit of
catchiness in the tune written by Andy Partridge.
You'll be humming Pluto out in the garden; it puts a
bounce in your step. Andy Partridge has that trick of
creating a vocal line which creates a rhythm all on
its own; even if it didn't have accompaniment, your
toe would be tapping.

But Mitch writes wonderful music himself. A good
example is Color Feel, where all of the backwards
guitars and pianos and percussion were created by Dave
Gregory. Sure, it's a beautiful blend of sounds that
few musicians could match, but it wouldn't amount to
much without Mitch; he wrote the song, and it's
beautiful.

Mitch's way with words, his rhyming humor, and his
sunny outlook on life have a great deal in common with
Andy Partridge. They have many of the same talents,
interests, and styles, lyrically.

So Make It Snappy and Try This On For Size; Smile
Awhile, I Hope

What a Gas!

Jim

Hiya,

Elvis Costello's interviewed in this wekks 'the onion' and has the following
to say about "Trust";

"Although I might have risked a rebellion among The Attractions to state so
openly, I privately modeled 'White Knuckles' on a couple of XTC records."

Guess which!
