What an oversight -- I checked the liner and he's on "I Don't Remember" and
"Family Snapshot" -- but no, he's not on 'GWF'. Funnily enough I always
thought he was (oh, the old people and their funny minds) but also odd that
the people who put the unpaid royalties data together didn't think to check
that.

On a trivia tangent, I recently had confirmation that (as I'd believed) PG's
original post-Genesis music director was Australian guitarist Rob Mackenzie,
formerly of much admired Aussie 70s prog band Mackenzie Theory and currently
lead guitarist with (believe it or not) Sha Na Na.

According to my contact, Rob revealed during a chat that he quit PGs band
just before the Angelic One's solo career really took off, AND he
subsequently turned down the offer to replace Steve Hackett in Genesis. Talk
about 'things that make you go "D'oh!".

.. which reminds me of another Aussie muso (ex of cult Melbourne 70s funk
outfit Hot City Bump Band) who contacted me recently, and admitted that he
had turned down the offer to join an up-and-coming local band as their
keyboard player, although his bandmate took up the offer to be their bass
player. The newbies were about to head off to America, and shortly after
that they made it BIG -- turned out it was ... Air Supply. Dontcha hate it
when that happens?

Still, it could be worse -- you could be one of those infamous Xerox
executives who, when presented with the Palo Alto lab's prototype Graphic
User Interface, which was created for the lab's newly developed desktop
computer system, totally missed the potential of the whole thing, responding
along the predictable lines of "we're a copier company, not a computer
company", and ordered them to sell it off. Their loss was Steve Jobs' gain
...

You're absolutely right, Ed, I could have made the same point without the
bluster. Emotional subject for me, I apologize to the list.

Cheers! Don't steal music!

Chalkhellboys (and girls),

At the instigation of Doug Goans, I now provide some RSS (Really
Simple Syndication) feeds of Chalkhills information. Use your
favorite RSS aggregator to read the following:

  Headline News http://chalkhills.org/headlines.xml
  Recent Changes and Additions http://chalkhills.org/recent.xml

  Discography Updates http://chalkhills.org/discog/recent.xml

Please don't ask me what "RSS" is or where to get a good aggregator,
though http://blogs.law.harvard.edu/tech/rss is a good place to start.

Enjoy!

Greetings on the hill,

A rare message from Pallius. My daughter wishes to express her sympathy for
anyone who had to grow up without XTC tunes. She's 14 now. This from the
girl who at 12 was sure the Yacht Dance refrain was "In all your pa-a-ants".
She's a jewel. She came home from high school today all jazzed because she
finally met another girl who is an XTC fan. Yes!

First off, Thanks Michael for turning me on to P.Hux last year. I just
finished doing the right thing, and ordering Deluxe, Purgatory Falls
and the new one from his site. Here's what I noted on his website
discography though which raised an eyebrow:

As Collaborator

XTC Oranges and Lemons "Cynical Days" (percussionist) Geffen Records CD
and
Double LP 1989

Well, how about that. You learn something new every day.

Figures. Just as I was about to check out the song "Waterfalls", it gets
pulled.

Anybody have a version of the song in mp3 format? (or for that matter a
version of Colin's "Mates" song on CD).

Totally unrelated to XTC--

Harry Nilsson's classic album "Nilsson Schmilsson" has been remastered and
reissued with bonus tracks most of which have never seen the light of day
before. It sounds better than the UK remaster of a couple of years ago
(which sounded like it was from a second or third generation mastertape).

My fav song still has to be "The Moonbeam Song" (along with "Gotta Get Up").

Remember, the age of reason has checked out to lunch.

Further to Paul's musings on Andy and cinematic treatises:

of course there was the glorious use of "I'd Like That" (I think) in
the majestic Jim Carrey vehicule (accident?) "Me, Myself &
Irene". That song and JC's Rhode Island cop earmuffs were the two
towering achievements in that schlock.

Gang,

This morning, one of my students handed me a CD by a band called
"Switchfoot." I didn't listen to the CD (no time on a Monday
morning), but I did check out the credits. The album was mixed by
Jack Joseph Puig and both of the Lord-Alge brothers, but, more
importantly, it was produced by our own John "Strawberry" Fields! (I
mean, are there be many other music producers named "John Fields" out
there?) I'm going to try to download some samples from iTunes Music
Store today. I'll let you know how it sounds.

By the way -- does anyone want a copy of The Grays' "Ro Sham Bo"? I
saw one on eBay for, like, $10 (and the price is rising!) Isn't that
unfair? Anyway, I'll burn you one if you'd like. Ian C Stewart was
kind enough to send me a copy he'd bought in a cut-out bin a while
back, and it's been spinning a lot recently. (Speaking of The Grays:
the new Morrissey album, "You Are The Quarry," apparently features
Jellyfish keyboardist Roger Manning on a few tracks. Interesting!)

In music,
-Ben

Hi Fellow Chalkhillians-

The wife got me a USB audio interface for my Powerbook for my birthday.
It's an M-Audio MobilePre USB, a USB bus-powered interface with two
inputs, built-in preamps, even phantom power! It's got two 1/4" inputs
and two XLR connectors too.

I hooked it up and recorded my first song in 15 years, using Apple's
Garageband application. Sure, it's not an original song (I'll get to
that), but I'm still excited to be able to cook up this kind of audio
at home. If I'd had this technology when I was in my band in college,
our demos would have been much better-sounding. The fact that I could
do this at *all* with a wild one-year-old in the house is pretty
impressive in itself, I'd say.

For my first effort, I did a cover of "Earn Enough For Us." If you want
to check it out, read my blog entry for notes on how it was done, some
excuses for why it's not perfect (ha!), and a download link. Please be
kind!
