Just one problem: Dave doesn't play on Games Without Frontiers. How much do you reckon he's claiming? Sean

Did you happen to notice the name of a certain Mary Margaret O'Hara? I wonder if still still brings her sewing machine around with her?... Dave NP: World Trade

Given that my last name is so close, I'll just go over and get that for him and give it to him next time I see him. Ol' uncle George, I love him so. I also noticed that there's one "John McCartney" who has yet to be paid for "Dear Prudence" -- could it be an accounting data entry error that combined "John Lennon and Paul McCartney," leaving out the middle bit? In any case, I'll just pick that up for them while I'm getting uncle George's check. You know, since I'll be there at the royalty office anyway, and all that... Thinking those would be a couple of decent checks to pick up, Dave Gershman-win

Interesting to speculate on the mixed fortunes of AP with placement of his songs in films and TV series: * Take This Town - from the dire Times Square, straight to video in many territories * Happy Families - from She's Having A Baby - not exactly the most A-grade of movies * James & the Giant Peach songs - rejected in favour of Randy Newman's. As Andy remarked with typical wit, "now I'm stuck with all these songs about a fucking peach" * My Train Is Coming - submitted but rejected for two films: Buster (AP: "put it down to Phil Collins' megalomania") and That Thing You Do (Fountains Of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger got the nod instead) * Cherry In Your Tree - from kids show Carmen Sandiago; arguably Andy's most successful venture into soundtrack composition, but still relatively obscure * Blow You Away (written with and performed by Brian Vanderark/The Verve Pipe) - from the dire The Avengers, straight to video in many territories ...and now, I Wonder Why The Wonderfalls An ignominious track record for Andy's filmic forays, to put it mildly. Lesser mortals would have chucked it in by now... ~~Paul "Tenacious A?" Culnane

Message-ID: <000001c41f94$a1e5cf70$847ba8c0@shabbyroad01> Organization: Shabbyroad Media Ok, here goes. First up - this is really gonna sound/read like bragging but fffsakes it's a dream come true. I can't believe I just spent Tuesday night and all-day Wednesday in Abbey Road. I've been working with a local (Dublin, Ireland) singer-songwriter and his band : Pugwash. http://www.pugwashtheband.com Thomas is the main man (songwriter and singer) and is a fan of the fabs (of course!) and power pop generally (counts ELO, The Move, Roy Wood, Honeybus, Kinks, and most *definitely* XTC among his influences). Anyone from Chalkhills that has checked out Pugwash has fallen in love with the music. The older Chalkers among you will remember I was in Abbey Road once before back in 1998 in Studio 1 for the Apple Venus orchestra session. Couple of months ago I used my trump card and contacted Dave Gregory to do the string arrangements for 2 songs on the upcoming Pugwash album. Meanwhile Thomas (from Pugwash) contacted The Section (http://www.thesection.net) who were fans of previous Pugwash albums and jumped at the chance to work with Dave. Next thing we know we've booked a day in Studio Two and off to London we go. What a day ! I got to play the Steinway in #2 (and tried out the one in Studio Three while I was there) as well as the upright piano that has been there since the Fabs. Many frames of video were shot and a large number of photos were taken. The highlight of the day, for me anyway, was working through my piano arrangement for one of the songs with Dave. Originally I was going to play the track but we managed to persuade Dave to play it ! Talk about magic - not only recording in *that* studio but getting one of our musical heroes to play on the album too.... "back of the net" as a certain Mr. Partridge would say. His string arrangements are wonderful, as was the performance by The Section. Dave will be recording some guitars for this album which is great news - he still records in his home studio and appeared to have really enjoyed himself on Wednesday. Some very amusing XTC stories were told throughout the day - I have to say that Dave is a v. funny guy (apart from being a gentleman and all round class act). Andy has been listening to recent Pugwash albums and is the most recent addition to the fans of this music - watch this space for future news of potential Andy/XTC/Ape involvement. If you want to check out the photos go join the fans mailing list http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/pugwashfans/ We were joined for the day by Steve Somerset (Hi Steve !) as well as some other folks you might know : Chris Hare (from The Honeybus), Graham Linehan & Arthur Matthews (writers of 'Father Ted', 'Big Train' and writers/contributors on 'Alan Partridge','Black Books','The Fast Show' and many more) and Kevin Eldon who is the guy who does George Martin in those 'Big Train' sketches. We found out that the 'real' Mr.Martin was in Studio One that day for an interview (some Beatles related project I think) which set the guys off on a hunt to try out their doppellganger Martin on the real thing. Yes. I'm still on cloud nine and it's a long way down. -Peter, Dublin, Ireland.

Asked Dave and unfortunately it's an error - he didn't play on that track. Did find a good friend and member of Pugwash on that site & he's chasing it up. >From: "Paul Culnane" <paulculnane@hotmail.com> > >DAVE GREGORY is listed! He's due however many pence for having appeared on >Peter Gabriel's "Games Without Frontiers"! Buy yerself a pint Dave!

Whoa, looks like the fastest man in the world could use some meds. Seriously, I've gotten to the point where the more I read someone having a big bloody hissy fit over some favourite hobby horse, (oh, I'm sorry, I should say "topic they feel strongly about", because feelings must always be respected, especially that most holy of rock n' roll cool guy emotions, anger), the less sympathetic I'm likely to be, regardless of how I might have been inclined to feel in the first place (I'm talking all over the net now, not here specifically). Nothing pisses me off lately like someone who's pissed off. Why they're pissed off? Couldn't care less, I just want it out of my face. I realized some time back that if someone makes it a point to make it abundantly clear very early upon knowing them that they "have a major temper, so watch it", what they are really saying is "I will bully everyone around me with spaz-outs of rage in order to force people to behave the way I prefer them to, so I'm telling you this now to save myself the energy of actually demonstrating one", and that. Is. That. If you're so feckin' angry that you can't contain it, you know what? Bloody well contain it anyway. Sit on it, rupture your colon doing so for all I care. I'm quite through meekly acquiescing to the loudest voice or most threatening presence and then being led to think that that's as it should be because anger is such an "extra legitimate" emotion, especially in musical and arts circles. Control yourself, you're a goddamn human, not a chimp, Ed K.

If you watch the whole thing through, past the Flash animation that piles on the albums he's produced, you'll see a picture of Andy, Colin, and Dave singing backing vocals for "Skylarking." It's pretty cool. Yeah, so that's http://www.tr-i.com -- go there and be happy. In other news, I GUARANTEE that I'm listening to more Billy Bragg than is ANYONE ELSE on this list. Listen to "St. Swithin's Day" 100 times and maybe you'll start to come close. But I doubt it. -Ben
