Well, to me, the chorus of I Don't Want to Be Here

Following on from the sell-out at the Hope & Anchor, we are proud to
announce the second coming of the UK's "Headspinningly Brilliant" XTC
tribute band.

This time we will be performing at SWINDON's finest music venue- Riff's Bar-
on Friday 21st March.

We promise as many new songs as we can perfect in the coming few weeks, as
voted for by visitors to our website. (Including a Mr. T Chambers who is
apparently keen to hear River of Orchids! Ho ho.)

This is very probably the only chance you will get to see us so close to
Swindon, so don't miss out.

Delurking for two seconds. Chris Vreeland wrote (and Paul Culane later
agreed)

>Too many of Andy's anti-war songs are suddenly WAY too appropriate
>all over again.

Couldn't agree more, but I've been listening more to Colin's anti-war
messages; specifically "Generals and Majors" and "War Dance." I never
really liked the latter, but it has more relevancy now than ever before.
My bad punk band is considering doing a death/metal version of "War
Dance" - a fine tribute to Messrs.. Bush and Blair. Any chance we could
coerce A&C into playing a free acoustic show in front of Number 10 and
1600? A medley of "President Kill," "Living Through Another Cuba,"
"Generals and Majors," etc etc. Maybe even "Roads Girdle the Globe,"
since thousands will be dying to keep those SUVs heading to the mall.

And finally, Radiosinmotion had this to say about "Fuzzy Warbles:"

>Colin is a smart man to keep his hands off of the Fuzzy Warbles
>collection. I know I will end up a hated member of this list for my
>dissension; but the 2 CD's are some of the worst material to actually be
>sold to fans.

To be completely honest, I half agree with you. Some of the material
seems like "filler" to me; songs (and non-songs) that were chosen only
to take up space. But several of the tunes are also real gems, and
should have been included on earlier releases. My wife and daughter
both adore the "James and the Giant Peach" songs, and we all agreed that
the movie would have been better if Andy had been allowed to finish
scoring the soundtrack. I personally think "Dame Fortune" and "Goosey
Goosey" are stellar tracks that could easily have been singles if they
had been allowed to move through the process of being recorded by the
entire band.

The price was too steep, like most of us I went through the Idea site.
The total came to about $47 with shipping - if I had gone through CD
Universe the price would have been only slightly lower and the discs
would not have had Andy's John Hancock. I know hundreds have said this
before, but if the discs had been more nominal (say $12-$15) I'm sure a
lot more would be sold.

But what the hell do I know? I majored in history.

I just have to say that I did something very interesting. I traded some CDs
that I rarely listen to anymore and got $45 worth of store credit. I looked
in the XTC section and found, you guessed it, Fuzzy Warbles Vol. 1&2, so I
snatched them up. I still have a few dollars left of store credit. So
technically (sorry Andy) I got FW free. :) I haven't really had a chance
to hear the CDs yet, but this weekend I'm going to pop them in my 5 Disc CD
changer and play them.

Is it "Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" by Eric Carmen? I kind of think they
sound eerily alike.

The line you mentioned ("I don't wanna find myself this way again")
corresponds with the line "Close the curtain and see it end".

Hi:

Martin "Marty" Rappard wrote in the last issue (#9-7):

I'd genuinely like to know: What exactly was your motivation in
writing the sentence above? (Besides trying to make someone else on
the list feel bad, I mean.) Are you throwing down the editorial
gauntlet, trying to say that you can do better? Are you trying -- with
very imprecise and insulting language -- to criticize the content of
Harrison's post?

Because, really, I don't see the point. It looks to me as if you're
just being mean, and that doesn't reflect well on you, at least in my
book. If you don't like someone's post because you disagree with the
content, then disagree and give your reasons. If you simply don't like
someone's style, hit the page-down key. That's what it is there for.

I'm sorry, folks, for bringing this up in public. Normally it's
something I'd take offline, but because Martin felt compelled to take
a jab at another Chalkhillian in front of us all, I'd like to see if
he's willing to defend his actions in the same manner.

I've been seeing a lot of XTC lately on VH1 Classic, the second
greatest cable channel of all time, behind M2 as it was in 1997 or so,
when it was all Britpop, all the time

Within the last 2 weeks, I've seen Ball and Chain twice, Mayor of
Simpleton twice, and King For A Day (version 2) once. A friend reports
that he saw another video, possibly Senses.

I was surprised how young and angry Colin looked in "Ball and Chain."
I guess I've never seen video of him before about 1990. And I had
never heard of the second version of "King" before, although it's in
the Chalkhills discography. Very trippy colorization that I think
distracts from the song.

On an unrelated note, what ever became of Andy's appearance on 'Space
Ghost Coast to Coast?"

the Warbles. I don't think they're overpriced, I like
'em, and I hope he keeps 'em coming, all juicy ten of

And Andy, I dunno what the line "And I don't want to
find myself this way again" sounds like, other than a
very good part of a very good song.

But one similarity has always caught my ear. Am I the
only one who gets reminded of McCartney's "Listen to
what the Man Said" when Towers of London plays? It
happens at a few points in Towers, but especially at
the end, that little falsetto melody that floats above
"la la londinium"...

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick point on the subject of Andy reflecting the text in the chords
that he uses - he does this to great effect in the middle eight of Minature
Sun:

Now everything looks right today. A billion watts of bright today.
And I'm a blazing kite today. I think I'll float around her house,
and tell her exactly how she makes me glow.

-- is all sunny major key stuff, then:

Now everything looks wrong today. An out of tune sung song today.
I've grown from big King Kong today, right down to miniature...

-- the sun drops behind the clouds and takes a turn for the dark and
minor...

Anyone think of other songs where Andy pulls this trick off??

Oh my, singing Swans songs to a baby, that's the most demented (and
hilarious) thing I've heard in a long time. "The Golden Boy
Swallowed By The Sea" might be a good one.

Or of course "Kill The Child": "I could kill this child in my arms, KILL
THE CHILD! KILL THE CHILD!" I'm sure that screaming this into the face
of any newborn would make for a happy and healthy kid. Oh man. That's
awesome.

Opeth - hell yeah, just saw 'em in Cleveland and it was amazing. Even
their "brutal fucking death metal" songs have three slow parts to them.
"Epic" isn't the right word for them. Paradise Lost was good too but the
PA was awful and the venue was pretty unamazing too. Can't wait to hear
"Damnation"!

On a totally unrelated note, I have recently completed the first issue
of my new magazine, Mouthy. It contains new interviews with many
kick-ass folks like Martin Newell and Mitch Friedman and Gary Numan and
Bob Daisley. And Michael Gira from Swans! I guess that wasn't a totally
unrelated note then.

Issue Two is already going to be a monster, I've got interviews with
Adrian Belew and Tony Levin (separately of course) and we're lining up
several exciting, Chalkhills-related interviews too. There's a brief

Yeah I know all about that but one can always dream. I was happy with the
few pieces Virgin licensed for Coat and loved Blast. I could easily see
another live box set although I'm not sure how much it would cost. Surely
their fans might help out by preordering said box set?

What's with this "get off the crack" stuff? It must be a UK phrase--haven't
heard that yet (although I have been known to lead a sheltered existence).
This is the second time I've heard that reference.

>>Barring that how about if you go BUY The H band album "Live Spirit:Live
Body" which is a Double Live Lp released this year. Dave is on guitar
on nearly all of the tracks and they do a nifty (if slightly
unrehearsed) version of "The Loving" by Dave's old band maybe youv'e
heard of them here on this list, XTC. And no Colin doesn't sit in but I
ain't a genie you know<<

Thanks for the tip. I hadn't heard about this album. I still think that it's
viable for Dave to do a set like this. If nothing else, a live recording of
a one off show (similar to what Dave Davies did with the live albums he's
released through the Internet). Sure, Dave would have to pay royalties and
all but he might even make a small profit as well.

Don't know how much Virgin would charge him for it but since he receives a
small stipend from Andy and Colin's music, he'd be paying all three of them
to perform the material. That doesn't make it any more affordable....

I'm just getting tired of waiting for Dave to release an album of original
material. I do enjoy his guitar playing on other folk's albums but would
like to see him stretch his creative muscles. Meanwhile I'll listen to my
live Cleaners From Venus/Martin Newell tracks with Dave on guitar.

Speaking of which, how does Martin get away with releasing his radio stuff?

Picked up the remastered Off White Album. The book excerpts are pretty funny
and the video (despite the fact that it's all from one camera angle and
Martin's pretty far away from the camera), is fun for those of us in the US
who don't have access to seeing Martin live.

I'd love to see a tribute album to Martin (particularly if they could get
members of a certain band to participate). He's a talented guy who
definitely deserves some airplay in the US

By the way, loved Roxy Music's reunion tour of last year. For those Roxy
fans fyi there will be a live album culled from the shows and the DVD is
awesome. It's clear the guys were having a blast. Forgot to mention Bryan
Ferry's Frantic as one of my fav albums from last year.

Gang,

According to Phonographic Performance Ltd. (which is, I've just found
out, the body that collects royalties for musicians in the U.K.), there
are many, many, many folks to whom royalty money is still owed (or has
been uncollected). If you go to their website, you can search for some
of your favorite artists:

I searched for Our Boys. Andy's name came up four times (as
"Partridge, Andy," "Andy Partridge," "Mr Partridge," and "Sir John
Johns"); apparently he is owed royalties for "Senses Working Overtime."
Dave Gregory, interestingly enough, is owed royalties for Peter
Gabriel's "Games Without Frontiers." Since I've been listening to (and
liking) Johnny Marr and the Healers' new album, "Boomslang," I typed in
"Johnny Marr." No hits. Apparently, however, Morrissey is owed
royalties -- but only for "How Soon is Now?"

Andy and Dave would have to register on the site to receive their
royalties. I've already dropped Dave an e-mail, but does Andy, our
non-Internetted pal, know about this? Even if it's just a few bucks,
that's a cup of coffee or a trip to the cinema, right?
