Mmmm. Someone's been checking out a Wil Wheaton site and then
reporting back to us at Chalkhills...Do I smell a Trekkie/XTC
cross-geek in our midst? You know, I've been told we're as bad a
Trekkies!:))

Hey Judes,

Greetings from the land of drooling, poodle-style
subservience and ruddy good pop music. Oh yes.

Three things to insert in to your collective
shit-chute. Why not enjoy them all?

Firstly, I had the splendid pleasure of spending an
evening with funky white boy extraordinaire Michael
"Michael" Versaci this week. It was very nearly one of
those cock-wrenchingly exciting Chalkhills summit
things that everyone seems so keen on, but sadly
Duncan "Oh, THAT burger establishment" Kimball made a
total balls-up of our meticulously planned rendezvous
and was faffing idly in front of the bleedin' golden
arches instead of the much more
fresh-vegetable-friendly branch of Burger King
(located right in front of the F**KING ESCALATOR you
squinting Antipodean nerk!) where myself and the Big V
were anxiously hangin'. Nonetheless, Kimball has since
apologised and is due to be horsewhipped in front of
Buckingham Palace very soon. Tickets are available, I
imagine.

But, as ever, I digress.

So there's me and the Big V, out on the town and
virtually thrumming with pent-up sexual energy and
contempt for mankind...first we headed for the big
guy's hotel (no, it wasn't THAT kind of sexual
energy...honestly, you Crowded House fans are all the
same! Filth, I call it...) and made mincemeat of his
company bar tab. Naturally, being an Englishman, I
absolutely hammered Mike's measly one pint with a
triumphant three flagons of the black stuff. A
childish boast, I admit, but an important one for my
self-esteem. Aaaaaanyway, following a rousing bout of
intelligent conversation during which it became
apparent that Mike is every bit the pinko scumbag that
we've suspected all along (and sing hosannas, sweet
children of Uncle Scam, for there is hope for your
nation!) and a man after my own bigot-bashing
communist heart, we adjourned to Pizza Express for
further verbal tomfoolery, more booze and, not
entirely surprisingly, pizza. There were no
fistfights, no personality clashes and absolutely no
nudey-prod games. A fine time was had by, at the very
least, me.

Where were you Kimball? We missed you. A bit.

Invite the Big V to your next barbecue. He'll bring
the sauce, ladies. Know wot I mean, innit.

Time for thing number two. There's a new British band
that you should all lend an ear or two to (tutu?).
They're called The Futureheads, they hail from sunny
Sunderland in the fragrant North East of England, and
they sound the very spit of early XTC combined with,
glory be!, 'Pink Flag'-era Wire, 'Entertainment'-era
Gang Of Four and all manner of noo wave, post-punk,
quirky, angular terpsichorean frippola. F**king
brilliant, in other words. I saw them at the Reading
Festival and they ruled. The rapid-fire interplay
between the three (or was it four?) vocalists was
simply dazzling...I believe they are unleashing a
download only single on their splendid website on
October 27. It's called 'A To B' and I thoroughly
recommend you hurl a pound or dollar in their
direction, for 'tis worth every last groat.

Finally, that third thing you've all been desperate to
hear. I was flicking through the four measly TV
channels at my disposal last night and stumbled upon
'Me, Myself & Irene', that moderately amusing Farrelly
Brothers thing with that Jim Carrey fella in it.
Having nothing better to do, except jig young Florence
up and down in an attempt to stop her from screaming
the house down like the frontman in a particularly
high-pitched black metal band, I watched for a while
and was delighted to hear a minute or so of 'I'd Like
That' on the film's soundtrack. I'm assuming this was
common knowledge - bear with me, I don't get out much
and even when I do I tend not to listen to the words
that come out of other people's mouths unless
absolutely necessary - but either way it came as a
pleasant surprise. The film wasn't too awful, either.
I particularly enjoyed the dildo-related jokes. Always
a pleasure. Jokes, that is.

By the way, does anyone else hear dig Erin McKeown?
It's not standard Domster ear-candy, but I'm really
enjoying her new 'Grand' platter. I always wondered
what Edie Brickell would have sounded like had she not
sucked like a industrial vacuum cleaner.

Salut!

Dom

Chalkhillers,

As usual, I'm starved for good music. And, as usual, Bruce Brodeen and
NotLame have made that good music come to me.

I point your browsers to Volume 6 of the International Pop Overthrow
collection, 3 CDs chock full of 66 songs by some of the best and
brightest in pop music. I vaguely recognize some names and some
sidemen, but, for the most part, all of these bands are new to me.

Do yourself a favor and visit http://www.notlame.com to order this
compilation. The price is a measly $15 for this 3-disc set. Can you
go wrong? Nope, I don't think so!

P.S. The new Death Cab for Cutie album, "Transatlanticism," is
currently rocking my world.

Dear Friends of Atomica,

Just wanting to remind you of our showcase show in Sydney, and how we
would LOVE to see you and as many car-loads of people you can muster. This
is a bit of a special night for us in that we have a record company checking
us out for real , and we have been given our own night at the Annandale
(which is pretty cool), and of any night EVER we really need YOUR SUPPORT
next Tuesday night.....

On the bill also will be the No1 DJ from the Central Coast (One Fine Day) DJ
Yoddy and all girl band "Stripper" from Newcastle. We are also trying to
make it as punter friendly as possible by making it an early finish (11pm or
so), and we will be playing a shorter set (45mins so we don't bash you
senseless for longer than necessary on a weeknight).

We will also try to keep the door charge to an absolute minimum. As it is
the Annandale, we can't make it free because we don't run the door. We will
however try to sacrifice as much our our takings as possible so 'everyone's
on the door' to some degree. We just want you all to be there, enjoy a good
night out and check out what we've been up to in the studio for the past
year with the Atomica project... and hopefully help us get a record deal!!!!

Hope to see you there.... Music starts at 8:00pm and we are on around
10-10:15pm..

PS We want to see ALL our friends from the Central Coast and Newcastle
there!!!!

I'm really happy with my copy of the tribute mp3 disc.
Fantastic job by all! I've been on a couple of other
tributes that were horribly done, and this one is a
pleasure to be part of...thanks!

Also this caught my eye from the XTC site:
"Andy has been working on potentially supplying a new
Fox TV Series "Wonderfalls' with its theme. He
recorded six pieces of music, including two songs "I
Wonder Why The Wonderfalls" and "These Voices" which
are being mulled over in Hollywood right now. Fingers
crossed."

This is great! I saw the pilot for this show and it's
quite different from anything else on TV. I was
looking forward to it before, but now...!

For those who want the skinny on it, it's about this
teenage girl who's bored with life in general.
Suddenly, inanimate objects begin speaking to her,
forcing her to interact with people, changing their
destiny and hers. Very quirky. Based on the pilot
alone, it should be a big cult hit.

I really hope Andy's songs become a part of the show -
his unused contributions to "James & Giant Peach"
really would have made that a better movie, and
perhaps some of his magic will rub off on
"Wonderfalls". At the very least, the demos will
probably show up on future FW.

"Wonderfalls" is almost too good for FOX to be
producing it and I dread they will ruin it somehow by
the time it reaches the airwaves. Fingers crossed.

Dear Chalkholders:

If you have not purchased a copy of the the King for a Day compilation
offered by our own Richard Pedretti-Allen, I urge you to do so ASAP for it's
a true gem.
http://www.geocities.com/king4aday_xtc/

And if you didn't know already that the songs of XTC are truly special.
You will certainly realize it once you have spun this on your Mp3 player.
There's something for everybody here with 134 tracks of your favorite bands
songs done up by adoring fans with names you will certainly recognize. The
styles vary from Rocking to lounge and almost every conceivable musical
style in between. Young or old if you love music this XTC cover project
will warm your musical heart in some way.

My current favorite is Chris Vreeland's version of "I don't want to be here"
Is that Andy on back up vocals, Dave on guitar, Colin on bass? No, well it
doesn't matter because it rocks anyway! Thanks to one and all who
contributed such great stuff. It's the best $6 I've spent in a very long
time!

Cheers,

Jamie

OK

So this is a very tentative enquiry at this stage. In response to a number
of emails suggesting that there might be interest in a short X-sTatiC tour
on the East Coast of the US, we were wondering if there were any chalkhills
members with experience/ contacts or suggestions who would be prepared to
offer a hand organising- venues, media, accommodation, travel, instruments
etc.

I guess we'd be looking for maybe 5-7 gigs, in a short period of time (one a
day), sometime next year with a sensible and economic distance between gigs.
New York? Boston (not a big college town apparently)?

If you can offer help, contacts or advice, please drop us a line on the web
site.

Cheers
