Just started reading an involving new piece of fiction called "The Curious
Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" by Mark Haddon. It's about an
autistic teenager who sets out to solve a neighborhood mystery. The main
reason I'm recommending it to Chalkhills is that it takes place in our
Swindon, which is described by the protagonist's father as "the arsehole of
the world."

Just a quick Ad for my homey Marshall, his new LP "Whats In The Bag?"
will be released on July 22nd.

 Go Buy it!

He is one of the few American Songwriters in the same league with Mesrs
Partridge and Moulding. And his bass player is even better....

Just a couple of random responses on the last digest:

1. Zevon's "Stand In The Fire" is a great live LP. I did a nice transfer to
disc and would be happy to burn a copy for anyone who wants to send a B&P.

2. Speaking of rockers recording music for video games, has anyone else
played the Replacements games (Freakshow & A Bad Day on the Midway)? I
picked up the latter but not the former, it was really bizarre, but in a
good way if you know what I mean. What else would one expect from The
Residents?

3. Bootlegs & Ebay: I used to be really over-zealous about reporting them
to ebay, but found that nothing was ever done. The basic response I got from
them was that unless *I* was the copyright holder for the
movie/music/whatever, I didn't have the right to report them. I agree that a
lot of sellers will pull their auctions if you press them, but most don't
pull them & ebay doesn't seem to be overly anxious to do so either. After
all, every sale is a jingle in their pocket. I've noticed that some artists
really police it, and others don't.

I still have many Warbles to cross...#2 is on the way. Hope to be caught up
in a month or so. Thanks for the reviews of them, I find them fascinating,
although I do have some of the tracks. And like all y'all, I'm chomping for
some new XTC material!

Tomorrow, I'm going to go see They Might Be Giants. This will be their
second time here in Buffalo. Last year, they were rained out. Hopefully
this year they won't be rained out. The weather doesn't look promising
though. They're talking about a chance of showers and thunderstorms
tomorrow evening. I hope it holds out until after 9pm when the concert's
over. I wonder if they'll sing, "25 O'Clock".
Also, this upcoming weekend, I'm going to my Mom's to see out hometown's
annual hot air balloon rally. I'm planning on playing "The Last Balloon"
when I see the last balloon in the air. :)

I hate to be a heretic but I won't buy anything off the Idea Records or APE
websites until they have the prices in US dollars.

I like to know how much I'm paying when I buy something. I have neither the
time or the desire to look all over the web for a currency converter. I
complained last year and they said they would recitfy the problemo but no
such luck.

Surely this must be a mistake... someone other than myself with an
appreciation of Manchester's most severely underrated band? I couldn't this
post go by without comment - it's good to know it's not just me.

Apart from the obvious exception, Crispy Ambulance are, for me, probably the
most interesting band that came out of the Factory Records stable. Their
brilliantly unfashionable album, The Plateau Phase, is the only album that I
have played constantly for the last 20 or so years. With the exception of
one or two interested music journalists, they were pretty much, lazily,
written off as Joy Division copyists at the time. Their connections to Joy
Division were mostly geographic and though they inevitably worked with many
of the same producers and studio technicians, their music inhabited a
different sphere.

After a gap of 18(ish) years, they reformed last year and recorded a new
album entitled Scissorgun, which pretty much picks up where they left off. I
believe they are working on another at the moment.

If you have any spare cash, after buying Warbles 3&4 of course, I would urge
everyone to get a copy of The Plateau Phase :-)

Gary - thanks for drawing my attention to that compilation it sounds pretty
interesting.

thanks
Andrew

My newly reconfigured band and I are doing a rare show in the very
near future. There will be some new songs that will be on the next
album, and if I have the balls, I'll play a new song from my next
musical, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. It's at the seriously hip Zipper
Theatre. In the band will be Dean Sharenow, Chris Smylie and Eric
Dellapenna, whose name I purposely misspelled. Here's the info--

Following our third successful gig last month, followers of the
ever-unfolding adventures of X-sTatiC will be aware that we were thinking
about how to move our little experiment onwards.

We promised that our next chapter would be different. We didn't know how, we
just knew it would be.

True to the sprit of outrageous ambition, we are overjoyed, and slightly
nervous, to announce X-StatiC's FIRST TOUR!

 The dates run as follows:

FRIDAY 19th September, Riff's Bar, near Hook, Swindon. 8pm
A special acoustic set, featuring all the XTC songs you NEVER thought you'd
hear live, and we NEVER thought we'd have to learn. .

SATURDAY 20th September, The Victoria, Swindon.8pm
 A full balls-out electric rockafest, featuring a revamped set-list -i.e. a
bunch of songs we've never tried.

Ta-daaaaa! Ok, so not MUCH of a tour. Some might say, a 2-day tour of
Swindon, in fact. But where better to celebrate our one-year anniversary
since we took this project onto the stage at the Hope and Anchor?

So, to all those who've seen us before - you can expect something totally
different. And to all those who have been thinking about maybe getting
around to seeing us one day, mark our words and mark them well. This could
be your last chance. It seems quite likely that we'll be putting things on
ice for a while after this hugely optimistic venture.

So - superglue the babysitter to your sofa, break out of prison, miss jury
service, hijack a Great Western train, steal a car, do whatever you have to
do, but don't miss this once-only event. Swindon is only an hour down the M4
from London, and you could go see the Big Horse thing on Saturday to kill
some time between these momentous entries in the history book of ROCK.

We will be looking into local B&Bs, so contact us if you need information on
where to stay.

It would be of enormous value to us if you lot email us to let us know if
you can make one, both or neither gigs. Enormous values cos we ain't sure if
we're splitting our audience!!!

Well stay in touch you crazy people, and we'll see you in Swindon.

Much love from X-sTatiC.

hello all,

while not perhaps experiencing the same depth of feeling recently
expressed on this list, i have some comments/questions on both the
latest fuzzy warbles instalments and even the ones before. I am not
a rich man, and have infact often pondered the irony of the fact
that recently xtc has released as many albums as they had heretofore
in their career, whilst actually only writing/recording three. Be
that said, after such a ong drought, i was gald to say my cup
overflowed-eth...

I bought all FW discs through the web sites for the same reason i
buy records (dating myself, i know, but get over it) from bands at
concerts. i personally feel it's worth an extra dollar or two to
know that more of the money is going into the bands pockets. when i
playes, i was always grateful for t-shirt and disc sales because it
meant i could eat that night... (enuff about me, but those of you
who know me know i know what i'm talking about...)

i also have too many of Andy's autographes, but i hold onto the
thrill of seeing it the first time... the first FW discs reached me
weeks after some on this list has theirs, frustrating, but not the
end of the world....

My problem is this (sorry for the extended drum roll): Opening the
first package, one CD fell to the floor and shattered. I was mad at
myself, and replaced it. Then, weeks later, a friend banged my CD
tower with his suitcase and it fell over. Only one CD broke: FW 2
(the one that hadn't before)... I noted the coincidence which seemed
to take on added importance when after playinf the added price to
buy from APE, the CD's arrived (on time!) but SHATTERED! I kid you
not, one of the jewel cases was in two main pieces, with at least
twenty others rattling around in there... the other wasn't
completely broken int wo, but the front and the hinge were totally
cracked.

My girlfrined calmed me down and convinced me to buy new cases and
forget it, rather than tak emy case to APE. That said, i'd sure like
to know: Am i alone in this? has anyone else found, as i did after
closer inspection, that the jewel cases are rather flimsy compared
to others? mine arrived wrapped half-assed in bubble wrap which was
visibly inadequate...

it seems a shame for a product that is aimed so clearly at core
fans, and which depends so directly on their good will (and i've
thought much about certain comments Colin made in Wes' interview),
to be so shoddy in execution. The music's the thing (to paraphrase
Bill S.), but seeing that we're to have as many FW discs (sans M
Moulding), and we're being asked to go the extramile, it would be
nice to know our Beloved Mr Partridge was doing the same for us.

i'll buy the next ones. i admit it. but i'm not proud of it, and i'm
not happy feeling this way.
kisses from the French riveira,

don device
