"Young And Rich": one of my all-time faves also! Bought it on its
original street date. A Ken Scott masterwerk. TWorld Tour!! Saw them
rock Vanderbilt in '76. Sadly, no CD reish yet. Plus, their underrated
3rd album "Tubes NOW" really groovystrankpf as well. Van Vliet! and
Smoke... it's how you do me.

Did recently acquire a fantasma UK 2CD A&M retroremastr smapler with
selected cuts from both, but that's not quite enough now, is it?

Sputnik Spooner is GOd. Friend of mine in Phoenix knew them way back
when they were The Beans. On the prairie, dog.

I absolutely loved the A&M Tubes. Capitol hits with Todd simply fell by

I'm pretty sure they shelved the Michael Penn-produced tracks. See the

All Klaatu albums are available (or have been) on CD -
I have them on my shelf - infact the first two also
came out as a two-fer - nah, prefer Hope on its own
since it's a concept album.

Thrillington I also have - was it worth it? only cos
I'm a McCartney collector and have to have them all.

Sigh - yet another low in Sir Paul's career.

Me? I'm just waiting for the DVD release of anything
by XTC.

On a thread I had nothing to do with.came the bright idea of things we'd
like to see on CD--
Steve selected--
Kirsty MacColl - Desperate Character and Titanic Days (never seen either
of these, and the former may never have been released on CD)

The former I don't have but I do have the latter album on CD somewhere.
Steve, if I can dig it up you're welcome to have a copy on CDR.

from Neal>Warren Zevon "The Envoy"
Actually, it was released briefly on CD during the early 90's along with one
of my favs Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School

As to my personal favs that haven't appeared--
Difford & Tilbrook
The Idle Race (both the first and second albums)
Twang Bar King -Adrian Belew (I have the vinyl and did cobble together a
version of it between the songs that I recorded from the vinyl version and
the Belew anthology). It's not a great album but it's fun as hell.

Rag & Bone Buffett -Xtc-yes, it was on Cd. But it hasn't been remastered and
I love a number of songs on that CD. I just wish they sounded better.

Bryan Ferry & Peter Gabriel - All the b sides that never made it to CD or
were released on singles (I have most of Ferry's but only a couple of
Gabriel). With Ferry's boxed set forthcoming and Gabriel's rumored maybe
it'll come to pass

Bands that went that once had promising careers.
Anything by 10cc after the middling Deceptive Bends. Seems the talent
disappeared a spoonful at a time.

They didn't have that far to fall but Oasis after What's The Story Morning
Glory.

Sounds great! Not to quibble but will it be remixed for 5.1? (one can always
hope although I'm sure Virgin probably won't go for it)

Terrific news from Mr. Long concerning the upcoming DVD of XTC vids. I now
have an excuse to buy a darn DVD player after putting it off lo these many
months/years. Yes, I know the Lord of the Rings DVD is killer...but I
digress...We're talking all the post-Look Look videos, nearly all of which
I've never seen. The last I ever saw of XTC on any music TV channel was the
Peter Pumpkinhead video which seems like half a lifetime ago...well about a
third of a lifetime in my case...

Just got back from seeing Buddy Guy and the Blind Boys of Alabama at an open
air venue here in Chicago...Buddy should kill his soundman, his guitar was
wholly inaudible but the man can still sing the blues! And the Blind Boys
did a very sweet version of "Amazing Grace" to the tune of "House of the
Rising Sun" which is as groovy as it sounds...

New releases that have floated my boat of late:

The Thorns -- if you don't have this I recommend giving it a try. Matthew
Sweet, Pete Droge and Shawn Mullins do the Crosby Stills & Nash/ Tom Petty
thang fairly well, although the album could use a solid rocker or two. Why
so glum fellas? Y'all can rock when you want to...

Steely Dan -- Everything Must Go: I didn't care much for this at first, but
as with all Dan albums upon repeated listenings it just gets better and
better and better...this may be their funkiest album yet, and I'd put "Lunch
With Gina" and "The Things I Miss the Most" up there with anything from
their classic 70s stuff. "Things..." in particular is a yuppie lament that
only Fagen & Becker can pull off, some seriously delicious irony in that
one. Overall I'd say it's in the same sonic vein as Two Against Nature but a
bit more personal in the lyric department... Dan fans should dig this one.

Didn't care much for Wilco's "YHF" either ... as someone else noted I think
their previous couple albums are much better and I still think the Uncle
Tupelo stuff beats it all...

And one last request before I go -- PLEASE no more Harry Potter spoilers,
OK? Some of us were too lazy to reserve our copies and haven't read the dang
thing yet!!!

Snoring under blankets & coughing in the toilet,

This sounds really interesting. On an aside, I haven't managed to find

Well said. I have to agree. Probably around 1987 or so we'd have been ready
to write off Dylan & Young especially, but man did they ever bounce back!
Costello, I'll admit, has yet to really impress me with his newer
material..."When I was cruel" was good in bits but rather inconsistent, and
"Brutal youth" went absolutely downhill after the first three songs...I
haven't heard anything by him recently that can match up to the last
70s/early 80s work.

I once read something from Sting that a band should call it quits after
five records. That if they haven't "said" what they wanted to say by
then, they never really had anything to say in the first place. With one
exception, I agree. Depending on how one thinks about "English
Settlement". The end, the beginning?

Why five? Dunno. Anecdotal evidence seems rather consistent. My god, look
at U2. I love these guys, but . . . .

And regardless of what one thinks about Gordon, the Cops did only do five
records. Personally, I'd rather have more Stings than what we call
politicians - with the exceptions of Paul Wellstone and Jesse "The Body"
Ventura. Hmm . . .Minnnesota, the other Massachusetts.

for the record, I'm from freakin' Tennessee. The state of losers.

eriC replies:

That isn't too far from the comments I got from BMG's notes on L---- --
albums (which you get on Windows Media Player), which are supposed to be
objective in their criticism. The fourth album, True Colours, is reviewed
only in the sense that they treat it as a re-release brought on by success
of their fifth album. Yeah, but what does that have to do with the music?.
The seventh, Staring At The Sun, is considered by the reviewer a bad album,
but then he won't say WHY he doesn't like it-- are there bum notes? Rotten
guitar passages? Was he threatened with being fired if he didn't meet his
album review quota?

"Just don't like them" has never been a good enough excuse to say bad things
about them. "They suck" is not an adequate description of what one thinks or
feels is wrong about a group.

I started this topic about L---- -- because I thought many XTC fans liked
both groups (nyah nyah, mentioned them both in the same sentence). I know I
do, and so did one friend of mine in high school, and there was once a
request on a local lunchtime radio show for songs by both groups.

I guess the XTCynicism that prevails nowadays is butchering our perception
of what might once have been considered a nice sound, and now we find the
lyrics meaningless psychobabble and the atheistic tendencies flap in the
face of songs like "Heaven in My Hands". Pity.

Let's start a new topic. Anyone hate the Beatles? :)

Just a little note following the latest Digest:

Yeah, alright I freely admit that Mark King is a soulless nonentity but I
still stand by my comment that Level 42's Hot Water is a great record. maybe
its simply because it reminds me of clubbing in the UK in the early 80's but
I still own a copy of the 12" and will dust it down from time to time and
dance around the room to it (not a pretty sight I can assure you all).

BUT Radiohead Vs Blur? At least Tom Yorke has never tried to reinvent
himself as a Manc Baggy/60's Psych child/Cockney wide-boy etc etc etc. And
yes, 'Hail To The Thief' is an excellent return to form - glad you think so
too Dom - it has not been out of my CD player for over a month now and will
probably stay put until FW 3 & 4 arrive!

Frisbie & Torben Floor

I've gotten some great band tips from Chalkhills over the years and I'd like
to return the favor.

Two bands that hail from Chicago and sound nothing like XTC, but share those
qualities that are so rare in rock/pop groups. Intelligence, amazing
songcraftsmanship, big hooks, stunning melodies, and great lyrics.

Some great listings on the "CD's I'm looking for" listings, a couple
of things jumped out at me:

1. Joe Jackson - Mike's Murder (last time I looked it remains
unreleased on cd; I transferred my LP to cd and added some non-LP
B-sides as bonus tracks, quite a fine collection! I always liked this
soundtrack...have yet to get Joe's new one though, what's the word
from those of you who have it?

2. Buckingham-Nicks - One of my favorite releases, "Frozen Love" is
simply breathtaking. This one's been traded a lot, I've got a cd copy
with a bunch of unreleased tracks, I guess from the same sessions.
FWIW, I think Fleetwood Mac's latest is excellent and I haven't had
anything good to say about them since Tusk.

3. Difford-Tillbrook - I've got a mint LP of this one and can transfer
it to CD if anyone's interested in a copy.

Let me know if I can help anyone out with copies of the above.

On an XTC note: The latest Newsweek has an article on Tony Blair with
the headline "The Smartest Monkey". Don't know that XTC first coined
that phrase but it made me think of the Nonesuch track all the same...

Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Robert, I'm a long time

few weeks back concerning Mandy covering the boys' "senses working

Well, it seems as if there is actually a chalkhills / Mandy Moore
connection, which may explain some of the selections she covers
on her disc. Some of you long-time readers may remember a chalkhills

never met, John is formerly of Minneapolis and is the producer of

Neal Buck suggested: What are your favorite albums that you can't find
on CD?

Good question! I would say The Doll by Doll's first three albums:
"Remember" (1979), "Gypsy Blood" (1979) and the third, self-titled
album (1981). I got them on vinyl but nowadays there's not any
grooves left for the needle to ride in! Is there a single soul out on
Chalk Street who have heard these masterpieces and/or knows of any CD?
I think the singer and guitarist Jackie Leven has been mentioned in
Chakhillls a couple of times. He has a solo career going on which he
took up some years ago, after his period of ... eh, troubles. Here's
an axcerpt from The Independent, 26th September, 2000:

"An itinerant guitarist and singer who left the abandoned coalfields
of his native East Fife in the wake of Sixties acid rock, he spent the
Seventies playing in Franco's Spain, and a Berlin divided by the
wall. As the front man of Doll By Doll, he presented an intense blend
of transcendent hard rock and Celtic blues invocations in the
post-punk era. Nearly strangled to death in a street attack, he could
not exercise his rich soulful burr of a voice for an extended period,
sunk into heroin addiction and devised his own cure by setting up the
Princess Diana-supported Core Trust in the Eighties."

Maybe you'd say that "transcendet hard rock" doesn't sound that
appealing, but then you haven't heard the smashing last tree minutes
of "The Palace of Love" (from the debut album).

These three records, with great poetic lyrics, wonderful guitar
playing and amazing songs, will last for the rest of my life (and I
could really recommend them to all of you) if only there actually
existed some CD versions of them!!

Anybody's got a clue? I would really appreciate an answer.

God, I love you guys. I want to have your babies! Well, no... I want

Yes, I am waiting for Fuzzy Warbles 3 & 4, and yes, the backs of

So Andy, keep printing them your way -- except No. 7. Print that one

And the best album of 2003? Ringo Starr, "RingoRama", hands down.
Not because the songs are tremendous -- although they are quite

The CD is incomplete, it does not have all of the songs from the
double LP.

Nice to meet another Tubes fan. I met another last week. But I have
"Young and Rich" on CD, an AM+ release on A&M records. The first
Tubes also was released by A&M and also by Mobile Fidelity. Hard to
find, but it's out there.

What I'm waiting for is "Now", the glorious third album.

I've got this on CD. I got it as part of a box set of Buzzcocks CDs.

Yeah, I keep hoping. It was released in Japan, but I couldn't see
spending US$40 for something I don't listen to all that often. Then
again, even the LP is expensive these days

There's a "best of" CD available, but it's only highlights from the
original double LP.

I'm waiting for a number of albums:

Captain Sensible: Women and Captains First, The Power of Love,
Sensible Singles, A Day in the Life of...
John Denver: Take Me To Tomorrow
Thomas Dolby: The Golden Age of Wireless (US promo track listing)
The Dregs: Industry Standard
Freur: Get Us Out Of Here
David Grisman: Dawg Jazz / Dawg Grass
The David Grisman Quintet: Quintet '80
Allan Holdsworth: Road Games
The League of Crafty Guitarists: Get Crafty I
Mark O'Connor: Meanings of...
Uptones: Outback
U2: Boy (original UK issue with bonus track)

And there are others where the record companies botched the CD
reissue, but that's another story.

Martin Newell recently celebrated his 50th birthday with a very rare music
gig in Colchester.
The event was professionally filmed and there is a good chance of it being
released on video or DVD in the near future if enough interest is shown.

I've been asked to gauge interest via the site. Pop along to
www.martinnewell.co.uk and read all about it. If you already know you'll
definitely want a copy just send an email to video@martinnewell.co.uk
telling us what quantity and where you are.

This is just a straw poll sort of thing at this stage.

It was a really great gig by the way and quite well attended by XTC fans who
I'm sure must have graced these pages from time to time.

The same director of this video is planning a documentary on Newell in the
not to distant future and Andy has already been successfully approached.

bands in decline? Well, most of them, other than XTC,
really. Especially Blur. Yikes!

Hard to find CDs I'd like:

The first solo albums by Adrian Belew and Dave Davies.

I do have that Difford/Tillbrook album on LP
somewhere...and Titanic Days by Kirsty Macoll was
widely available on CD when it was new and "I can't
stop killing you" was all over the radio. Is it really
hard to find?
