In digest #8-39, Ryan Anthony finally discovered Gilmore Girls and
numbered this among his observations:

> it's in dire peril of cancellation.

My how eight months can make a difference.

With the WB losing their Tuesday night anchor Buffy the Vampire
Slayer to UPN, they decided to counter program with Gilmore Girls.
And get this, the ratings went up! The show is pulling in BETTER
ratings than dear departed Buffy. The WB is so high on this renewed
interest in the program that they are scheduling repeats of the first
season in prime time this fall as "Gilmore Girls: Beginnings" or some
such silly name.

Now if only they would move the show out of Tuesday night, where a
horde quality TV shows were scheduled last year. And I still choose
to watch Buffy, which unfortunately has yet to use any XTC tunes.

"the most disturbing part comes near the end in a part where everyone
is discussing "new wave." In it, there are several vitriolic diatribes
about how these new wave bands are shit, etc etc and they cite XTC and
the Cars as the most frequent contributors to the distruction of
punk's good name."

I have heard crap like that before... Basically, it's punks who have
nothing better to do but criticize "new wave" because it made it more
popular than so called "punk" music did.

If I remember correctly, Blondie, Ramones, Moder Lovers, Television,
Talking Heads were all the original punk bands. Hell, we could go as
far as saying Velvet Underground, MC5, Zappa and New York Dolls were
the first punk bands.

Sometime in the late 70's, punk got pretty stale. Many punks felt that
if it was not "hardcore" it was sellout, hence, the media term "new
wave." Punk was supposed to be original and had nothing to do with how
hard it is. Anyway, that is my take on it. I always hated the punk
bickering in the 80's about who was "real" punk...

RIP John Entwhistle.

I have included the article! In case for some reason I can't reprint
it here, I will get to the skinny. XTC may be nominated to the Rock &
Roll Hall of Fame!

Here is the reprinted artical below:

The Police, Elvis Costello, & Iggy Pop Among Rock Hall's Eligible

July 1, 2002, 12:35 pm PT

The Police, the Clash, Elvis Costello, Iggy Pop, and Cheap Trick head
the 2003 class of newly eligible, first-time artists for the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame.

In all, there are 44 artists eligible for the first time. To become
newly eligible, an artist had to have first recorded 25 years ago
(1978).

Others eligible for the first time are Beausoleil, Black Uhuru, Karla
Bonoff, the Boomtown Rats, Buzzcocks, Cameo, Marshall Chapman, Clifton
Chenier, Chic, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Dead Boys, Dixie
Dregs, Ian Dury, Joe Ely, Foreigner, Generation X (with Billy Idol),
the Germs, Robert Gordon, the Heartbreakers (with Johnny Thunders),
Nona Hendryx, the Jam, Evelyn "Champaigne" King, Patti LaBelle, Kenny
Loggins, Mink Deville, Eddie Money, the Motors, Motorhead, Teddy
Pendergrass, the Romantics, the Rumour, Shalamar, the Soft Boys,
Squeeze, the Stranglers, Stuff, Suicide, Wire, and XTC.

Costello is actually eligible twice as a first timer as a solo artist
and with his group, Elvis Costello and the Attractions. Precedence was
established when Patti Smith and the Patti Smith Group were previously
nominated. The solo Smith made the final ballot twice but was never
enshrined.

Pop, meanwhile, was previously nominated as a member of the Stooges,
which made the final ballot in 1997 and 1998 but also failed to enter
the Hall of Fame. Both LaBelle and Hendryx were members of LaBelle;
Pendergrass was a member of Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes; all three
went solo in 1978. Loggins was part of Loggins & Messina, who have
never been nominated.

Greetings from Brazil.

I couldn't help to add my thoughts on the relationship between the
WB's GILMORE GIRLS and music:

Apart from the fact that Lane (Rory's Korean friend) is a lover of the
so-called independent music (she's the one who brings WASP STAR in
that episode), the show also has presented, over the episodes, music
that I love.

One recent example was Wilco's "Heavy Metal Drummer" (from Wilco's
YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT), when Lane enters the music shop (whose owner is
none other than Carole King, whose "Where You Lead" plays on the
opening credits).

Grant Lee Phillips often appears playing on the streets (in one very
funny episode, he had a dispute with another man over who was the
town's troubadour).

All in all, GG is a very good, well produced and well acted piece of
television. I hopefully hope the PTB at WB think twice before acting
ABC-like...

Paulo.

P.S.: We Brazilians are Stupidly Happy because of our national team's
achievent on the World Cup.

Well, I think Bert could justify accusing Harrison of plagiarism if,
in Bert's opinion, Harrison had lifted prose unattributed from another
writer. It is the ultimate insult to a writer precisely because it is
the worst crime a writer can commit qua writer. I don't know if
Harrison did "borrow" the prose or not, because I find it difficult to
care less. Nevertheless, these things are clearly demonstrable one
way or another. The fact remains that if Harrison did it, that's
plagiarism.

Chalksters,

Feels like a very long time since I've posted ... or maybe it's because I
haven't had a good night of sleep in 2 weeks. And it's not because I've
been playing Moby all day and all of the night!

Esteemed to be sharing a birthday with George Clinton (and markedly less
so, Barry Manilow), my daughter Jordan Elise Lieman was born on June 17
2002. Thankfully she doesn't know much about Barry Manilow at this point.
And she has yet to react to Stupidly Happy either positively or negatively.

Birth announcements have already been sent out, and the inclusion of the
subject of this message in said announcement was soundly rejected
(although, understood) by the one who makes such decisions. Maybe I'll mock
one up on Photoshop when I have time. (Ha! Time! Ha! That's funny!)

Then again, I was listening to Oranges and Lemons while commuting to the
hospital for the three plus days my wife and daughter were there, and
Garden Of Earthly Delights (again, as when my son was born) sends a chill
down my spine.

I have to agree with everybody who thinks Wilco has put out the album
of the year. On first listen, I was not impressed, but it has grown
on me and attached itself in my brain. I have EC's newest, and I am
an old-school Costello-phile, but it pales compared to YHF. Has
anyone heard the new Guided By Voices yet? I want to get it, but
haven't taken the plunge.

Myself, I don't understand why people would want to take the Bert V.
Harrison match off-list. I haven't been this entertained since Mike Tyson
did his taste-test on Evander Holyfield's ear.

OK it hasn't got all that much to do with XTC, but it's about a very
important musical issue and hey, given the combatants, you can't say it's
not entertaining. Any chance to watch two such aggressively articulate and
argumentative opponents duke it out is a treat in my book.

I freely admit I'm rooting (oo-err missus) for Harrison, but that doesn't
mean I am "against" Bert. He has a perfect right to express his opinions,
totally wrong though they may be (:P) hahah..

But seriously folks ... how many times does one have to remind the less
tolerant Chalkers amongst us about the existence of the "Page Down" button?
If you're not interested, don't read it ... and stop whingeing!

Vale The Ox. How come Death didn't take Bush or Sharon or Le Pen? If you ask
me, that's just one more irrefutable piece of evidence that, if there is a
god, he certainly can't be both all good AND all-powerful.

I ask you -- how could an omnipotent, good and loving deity take someone
like Jeff Buckley, yet leave behind a turd like David Irving?

If anyone is still interested in coming to the Gathering on 13-14th July.
Please get in touch if you'd like to come along.

The first thing to tell you is that due to various reasons (mainly me not
know it was graduation time at Oxford Uni - d'oh!) we're moving the
gathering to Lechlade which is nearer to the Horse and of course Swindon.

Thanks to Smudge's organisational skills we have a timetable that looks good
to me.

Saturday:
Meet lunchtime in New Inn - general greetings and hail-fellows-well-met
type stuff

Afternoon for either more gassing in pub or a walk down by old Father
Thames, enjoying the sunshine (har har) depending upon preferences (and
perhaps some meeting/picking up stragglers)

PM, meal and more drinks somewhere in Lechlade.

Sunday:
Visit the Horse and then on to The White Horse pub at Woolstone to meet
Debra Edmonds and some special-ish guests.

Debra - who is a star btw - has got Steve Warren (XTC's roadie and friend of
Andy P's from when they were little) to come along on Sunday - all things
permitting. He has said about bringing along photos and info to show us. And
she's also seeing if Paul Mabberley can make it too.

I want to book us a table(s) because it's a busy time of year, so can you
let me know if you are going to be with us for lunch. Can I ask you to let
me know asap or by Sunday lunchtime at the latest.

Here's a link to the pub
http://www.whitehorsewoolstone.co.uk/

And finally anyone else want a t-shirt? The design can be seen at
http://salmagundi.0catch.com/final/index.htm

And now I'm off to lie down in a darkened room and take the dried frog
pills.

Hello,

The Spys "The Young Ones" single (Virgin, 1979) is not the work of XTC in
disguise.

The record was made by another Virgin act, The Young Ones, who released
their own very good 7", "Rock 'n' Roll Radio". This has been confirmed by a
member of The Young Ones.

If anyone needs extra clarification before putting this hoary old chestnut
to bed, please feel free to mail me.
