Maybe I will someday get around to programming my MTV Music Generator to play some decent new stylings of XTC music and tape an accompaniment. Most of the time I try to be accurate, but I have to relate one song that I just don't want to sing like XTC do. With the "Wow!" ending of "Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead", I tend to feel the next song needs more energy, so I then sing a faster version of "My Bird Performs" that sounds rather punk rock. -------- OFF-TOPIC ALERT! Well, I finally bought Wingspan, but most of my favorites of Paul's are missing! Let's see... I just picked up a old copy of English Settlement in cd form (sorry, I can't, nor will I ever I fear, be able to spring for the remasters). This is noteworthy because the tape I've owned for the last ten years lacked several songs. My guess is due to time constraints on the cassette, a few songs had to get the axe. Anyway, I just can't believe I've gone all this time deprived of the joy of hearing tunes such as "Yacht Dance", "Knuckle Down", and "Fly On the Wall". This cd has not left my cd player since I've gotten it. I only pity my family who have to listen to it repeatedly :) (as the husband so richly commented, "Are these guys from Africa?" And, oddly, I was NOT listening to "Nearly Africa" when he said this...hmmmm. Of course, he used to think REM were British until I taught him better.) The only thing I find unsettling about this disc is, aside from the first three songs, everything else is in a different order. Perhaps this is the original song progression but it sure messes with my noggin. For example, I am furiously trying to retrain my brain cells to expect "All of A Sudden" to pop up, er, all of a sudden in the middle of the album instead of at the very end. But overall, I'm just lovin' it! :) And it's amazing how fresh ES still sounds even though the blasted thing is almost 20 years old. To me, that just testifies to the brilliance of our beloved Andy and Colin... --Angie

Some news bits: 1) The Coat of Many Cupboards release date has been postponed until at least January of next year, owing to difficulties remixing some of the live tracks at Idea Studios. Virgin isn't paying for facilities to do any of the remixing -- in fact, according to Andy, the only people being paid anything for this thing are the artist doing the cover and the hapless goober writing the liner notes essay. The 4-CD set will consist of one disk of Andy and Colin's favorite XTC songs, with written commentary from them; one live disk; one disk of outtakes, alternate versions and rarities; and one disk of the Cream of the Demo Crop that Andy and Colin have been assembling. (The Non-Cream--i.e., the demos unearthed by XTC and not chosen by Virgin for Coat--will become Fuzzy Warbles. There's a huge number of these, enough for several volumes.) There is some lack of clarity about the contents of the Demos disk: Our Man at Virgin says that it will replicate the Fossil Fuel collection in demo form; Andy says that's news to him. We shall see. Oh, and there's a 128-page booklet planned. With a big-assed worshipful essay. Written, as I say, by some hapless goober. And some pictures, I suppose. 2) "Una Guida Scolastica" is particularly funny when read aloud by its main subject into a telephone in a derisive comical Italian accent. It is NOT recommended as an *actual* Scholar's Guide to XTC, as it is shot through with stunning ineptitude. Perusal of the other copyright violations in the series (listed in the back of the Guida book), however, puts XTC in some grand company, including Captain Beefheart and The Third Ear Band (1968-72, drony acoustic proggers), who inspired this memorable riff: "They're the Bubonic Plague, expressed in music. They're the Pop Top Ten if you're dancing about with buboes and pustules in your armpits, and have 15 minutes left to live. They're Pieter Breughel in a Box." 3) Repetition is Indeed Very Important, very good, Harrison. (Confirmation of Sudden Hapless-Goober Bull-Session Insight.) 4) A mutual friend recently gave Brian Wilson a copy of AV1 and Wasp Star. Wilson apparently loved them, to the extent that he expressed interest in a collaboration with Partridge. Wilson is now on R&R following his recent tour, and will have more to say on the matter when he's finished resting up. Partridge has some pretty grave reservations about the gig--Wilson's had a, er, colorful past, and Andy wants to assess what extent this colorfulness has affected his musical decision-making faculties--not to mention his capacity to put two sentences together without drooling on his lap. Andy's also a bit worried that his own prickliness about musical matters might put Wilson off. So don't hold your breath... (But Lordy Lordosis, wouldn't that be *nice*?) I managed to get the Japanese versions of all of them except the Dukes compilation (and if they did that one in the Japanese version, could someone please let me know?). I have to say that up through Skylarking, there is a more than noticable difference in the sound quality. A friend of mine and I did the Pepsi Challenge with the US Geffen release side by side with the remaster of Drums and Wires using faders and such...definitely worth the money, and the packaging is most excellent. It's neat to hear those songs with drums and bass without pulling out the vinyl. I didn't notice a big difference on the O&L and Nonsuch, but it's still good.The Dukes stuff sounds far cleaner than my original geffen disc.I am glad they returned Skylarking to its original format. I have never understood how "Dear God" fit into that mold and frankly I usually skipped that song. I wish they would have put some of the other B-sides from that era on the album, but perhaps they'll release them in the future. Oh well.Non-XTC: Dallas's Chomsky (who are pretty quirky and have obvious 1977-1982 XTC influences) have just released their second album, aptly titled "Onward Quirky Soldiers". It's pretty darn solid, but I'm not sure how you would get it yet not in Texas. I would suggest going to their website here and bug them to put up a couple of MP3's or something...Jamesreturning to lurk mode...

The Gracenote website is a wonderful source as you can pull up some pretty obscure covers sorting by Song Title. http://www.gracenote.com/ (Doing a search for "Making Plans For Nigel" gives 89 results. Most of them are different configs of XTC CD's, but if you dig deep enough, you can find some gems! The All-Music Guide has lots of info too. Is there a website that details XTC covers? It was beautiful and I was not at all bothered by not being able to touch the stones. It must be because I've seen many programs on Stonehenge throughout my childhood that at first sight, I teared up with joy!!! I kept repeating how cool it was, and so my husband called me a dork! Next, we went to Avebury. There, we could touch the stones (but I didn't) and walk along the huge ditches. My husband thought that Silbury hill was really the left over dirt from the ditches. It was fun to walk around and the enormity of the henge itself was impressive. We also got to see one of those crop circles. Onto Uffington, to see the castle, White Horse, and Dragon Hill. Although my husband was somewhat dissapointed at not being able to get a good view of the horse, I thought it was incredible being able to walk from it head to its tail... right next to it. My daughter was amazing during this trip. She did not once ask to be carried (she's always wanting that), and walking down White Horse hill to Dragon Hill, Sarah kept falling on her bum, and laughed about it! She ang song about skipping and hopping. I think that kept her mind off of physical labor. The roads to the white horse were extremely narrow. My husband was driving and I was navigating. Most of the time, we were laughing and getting very nervous at the proximity of the oncoming traffic! It was so beautiful, I'd love to live in that region. Its always sunny when we go to England. The colors were vibrant and the gardens were beautiful. So many Thached-roof houses and sheep and horses! Also there were many Tank crossing signs (near military bases) as well as old-people crossing signs (actual signs with hunched over people)! This is how I celebrated my graduation! Blur has wanted Andy to produce the album, and for once their record company agreed with them, so he was hired for a week long try out session. The songs that he recorded with the band were Sunday Sunday, Coping and Seven Days. The first two were eventually rerecorded and released, but none of the three Partridge produced tracks have ever been released. The band complained that they sound too much like Andy Partridge and not enough like Blur. Apparently they really didn't get along, either, as Andy had Very Definite Ideas about how things should be done and that didn't sit too well with Blur who seem to inhabit a world some where up their own ass. Though with the regularity that Andy seemed to get fired from production jobs, it was probably a case of two rocks staring at each other and telling the other to move. Ahh, how I love them both. On the plus side, Blur's cover of Elvis Costello's "Oliver's Army" is about as close an approximation of XTC covering the song as one can imagine. And if anyone has a copy of the three Andy produced Blur tracks, I would desperately love to hear them and would be willing to trade my first born for them (amongst other things less likely to get jam in the CD player). - Darren Kramble "Food processors are GREAT!"
