It comes from the common (at least here in England) expression 'pigs might
fly' (or variations thereon), used to designate something that is very
unlikely to happen (eg. England winning a Test Match - cf. In Another
Life). Pink Floyd's Animals album cover (and the Pigs On The Wing tracks)
are another example of this expression 'in action'.

Having recently acquired most of the remasters (all bar Nonsuch, in fact) I
can safely say that, also personally speaking obviously, I like Skylarking
much better without Dear God at all. In fact, I wonder whether or not it is
significant that, thus far, the two albums that I've listened to the most
in this form are English Settlement & Oranges and Lemons, both of which
have the same track listing that I 'grew up' with (on vinyl in the former
case, CD in the latter). Mummer is definitely better with the bonus tracks
at the end, but in most of the other cases I've gotten used to them being
in the middle (even White Music and Go2 which were completely ingrained in
my subconscious in their original formats).
The one thing that really bugs me about the (UK version of the) remasters
though is the 'presentation'. What is all this 'standardised to 8 pages'
crap?? Why are there no track listings on the CDs themselves?? This would
have been the logical place to list all the tracks, but instead we have the
situation where it is impossible to tell from the packaging that there are
additional tracks present, nor what they are, nor indeed that they are
'extra'. Add to that the fact that you need a magnifying glass to read the
lyric sheets, and that no lyrics have been provided for the first three
albums, and all I can say is that I'm glad these aren't the only copies of
the albums that I own. I appreciate the attempt to reproduce much of the
original artwork, but why do it in such a way that it is almost illegible??
Finally, WRT to Jamie Lowe's ebb and flow (sheer poetry), how about adding
The Loving (sailors on the seas) and Humble Daisy (battleships and sunken
wreck) and (at a stretch) a couple from the Dukes - Collideascope (mentions
ships and sea) and Pale & Precious (the sea in her hair)
Oh, and Jamie responded to a suggestion:

It also includes 'one million salt seas', which ought to clinch it

I don't know the source of the expression, but it's pretty common in English, and it's probably what's being referenced in those songs. This show is streamed over the internet at www.earthwire.net I tried it out a couple of time last month and it seemed to go ok despite some initial problems with the equipment (mostly operator error). I hope you guys can check it out. I do not know how long I will be able to do it but for now they do not have a plan for that time slot so they are letting me go for it. The owner/manager of this site is a big XTC fan and I can only imagine that is one of the reasons I am getting to do it. I would appreciate any feedback on the set list. I try to cover the spectrum of XTC music with some kind of flow to it. It is amazing how easily I can fill in a 2 hour slot with their music and only cover a small percentage of their material. Those boys are awesome! Anyway, if you get a chance check it out and if you like feel free to let me know how it is sounding out there. the matador

(BTW Boy Lucas thinks that, because Ben's new band had four members, they ought to be called Ben Folds Six. Can't argue with that logic!) Suffice to say they played a blinder, and premiered a whole raft of new stuff from Ben's forthcoming CD, which he mostly recorded himself. It's called "Rockin' The Suburbs" and it sure does. Bitchen'. By luck, another friend of mine was there too, and he (A) got me a sneak preview copy of the new CD, which is utterly brilliant, and (B) tipped me off about Ben's appearance on cable TV at the nearby Channel V studios the next day. So we rocked along with the kids, watched them play live, and Boy Lucas and sisyter Amy got to meet their hero Ben, which was a real thrill for all of us. He seems like a really pleasant chap and he was very nice to the kids. Anyway, get the new album. It's superb. Two listens and I was HOOKED. Dunks

It is one of the oldest forms of sarcasm. Pink Floyd elevated flying pigs to a new level in their album "Animals" (1977). While they were shooting the cover for said album, the giant pig balloon escaped from its tethering and proceeded to drive people's senses of reality askew. However, Pink Floyd fans may note a reference to the Animals LP, which had a balloon of a flying pig sailing over a factory. The Floyd were also known to fly the pig over venues that they were playing at. This legendary pig was also mentioned on The Simpsons when Homer was on Lalapalooza, Peter Frampton was one of the guest artists and he exclaimed he bought his defective pig at Pink Floyd's garage sale. None of this has anything to do with XTCs use of the flying pig metaphor/simile/alliteration (English majors help). This is quite a stretch, but at one time Colin was apparently asked to tour with Pink Floyd after Roger Waters left. Ah, yes XTC content. Harry

The first word of the first song on the first album of the Beatles' is "well". It's also the first word of Radios In Motion, which (needless to say) is the first song on XTC's debut album, white music. A nice little coincidence that ties together the two greatest bands. I recently joined this mailing list and I'm chuffed to learn that so many people love XTC. I'm at uni in Australia and I'm constantly frustrated by peoples' lack of interest in my kind of music.
