Message-ID: <20000316065135.2462.qmail@web2101.mail.yahoo.com> RE: it seems to me that Andy's penchant for sabotaging his own success may be evident in the choice of this title, mainly because it will alienate your casual white anglo-saxon buyer by the title, since WASP does have negative connotations in the US. ok, ok, i'm growing weary of the Wasp Star debate, too, but that comment above is rediculous enough to warrent a rebuttal. I truly believe that most people, if they see the word 'Wasp', will think of a bug that flies around occasionally stinging things. Depending on the cover art, I really don't think most people would think of'Wasp' as a white-anglo-saxon-prodestant , in this case. Besides, wasp as a derogatory racial term isn't that offensive. I have never met anyone who felt the slightest bit insulted by that term (although it hasn't come up all that often). Maybe they could call it "Honkey Star". Although, thinking of that other definition, I think that Wayne Newton is about the biggest wasp star around...

My interests lie in sheet music for drums, but could contain guitars, piano, bass, and drums, etc... First, does anyone know if indeed sheet music from the boys exists? Second, are there any members of the digest who know of (retail) locations wherein XTC sheet music can be purchased? Lastly, in the alternative, is there someone who owns XTC Sheet music that I could get copies of? Please e-mail me off list if there is any information to be had. Best regards, John Gardner Chicago

XTC is using this title because it causes this kind of discussion and talk. It gets people saying,"Wasp Star, that sounds pretty cool what the hell is it?" And it certainly seems like a good idea to distinguish this from AVI in terms of people (read DJ's) getting a different experience on this album than on AVI. Remember, as of now the full title is "Wasp Star:Apple Venus Volume II" The name of the game is "charting." Art is fine. Treading the difficult line of art/commerce is hard. Going after commerce alone is "selling out." I think all us die hards would have loved it from the start if we had gotten what Andy wanted in the first place: A set of double cd's with both sets of songs on it together. We are so far up the bands news ass that we got our hopes up that this would happen. Well remember, we are uncommon fans. The regular people who like XTC didn't know this whole plan. Hell, they all thought AVI was their "comeback" album. Take a look at it from outside the "Hill." XTC has put out a beautiful album in AVI and what do you know, 1 year later, they are about to release ANOTHER album. WOW. Cool. Most bands I like take forever. Basically the bottom line is - This is a better way to go on their part. And that's what we want for them really, isn't it? Of course, I am not of the persuasion that this list should stick to strictly XTC content. It seems necessary that other topics related would come up since this is a DISCUSSION list. Also, I AM of the persusion that all these long posters just like to hear themselves type. Me included. Sorry if these thoughts sound random. I am trying to develop my "Larry King" style of writing. The Skylar King P.S. - Ate at Spago's the other night. Say, how about that Debbie Reynolds. Spike Lee's movies get me going!

Entitled "Shave and a Haircut with XTC" it features about a 20 minute interview with Andy and Colin, who are having their haircut while doing the 'view in an LA barbershop. They talk mostly of making AV1, what the songs mean; nothing we probably didn't already know. The highlight for me is listening to Colin talk, since to me he is what XTC is all about, and since he usually doesn't get a word in edgewise. The name of the DVD is "Circuit, Issue 2". It's very well made and has " for promotional use only" emblazoned on it. Anyone else heard of it? Dave

Message-ID: <000701bf8f90$9f355b80$0200a8c0@digitalpc> Whats this about Wasp Star being racist? I have never heard such a thing! I just scrolled through the last messages, maybe I missed something, but I highly doubt there is any racial meanings regarding Wasp Star. Nor were there any racial statements made with "White Music" which Andy mentions in "Song Stories" is named after "White Noise" which is that hissy sound you hear over transistor radios and stereos. I saw U2's "Legends" on VH1. God, what a dissapointment. I mean, I have nothing againsts artists who change, we all change. There are many artists I loved in the 80's that now sound nothing like they did back then and I still love their music. However, U2, is a big exception. They totally suck. Last I heard from them was the JT. After that they went from being one of my favorite groups, to being my lease favorite groups in the 90's, just above Hole and NSYNC... So, whats with the XTC Legends??? I think they deserve it. Anyone hear if they are doing something for XTC? I have a few Gigs on my PC waiting to record a 90 Minute special (ok, I will still accept 60 Minutes, but it will have to be comercial free!) Oh, as mentioned earlier, I have a 12" of Dear God/Toys in Mint condition. Its a radio promo and I wanted to see if anyone is interested in trading something for it or buying it. I would prefer a trade, but I will sell it. Let me know. Oh, I just recently sold some stuff on ebay and got a message from someone who thought Nonsuch was XTC's last album. WHAT??? I thought AV1 had ok promotion. At least enough to make the fans notice. I hope AV2/Wasp Star/Whatever gets good promotion and goes Platnium.

I've decided to leave it on Wednesday nights, because I like Wednesdays. This next listening party is for XTC's album, Mummer. For more details go to: http://www.angelfire.com/mn/mollyfa99/xtclisteningparty.html. I hope even more people show up. I hope the people like Janis, John (Dins) and some of the old AOLers can show up. I'd like to see you guys again. I miss the fun we had. Wasp Star is a wonderful name, and if anybody takes the word Wasp as a racial comment should just get real. I really doubt Andy meant anything. This discussion brings back memories of one time I had an AOL Listening Party for White Music and all these people came in accusing us of being racists. I don't have the album anymore, but if I had it, I would never do another listening party for it. So people take things too seriously. And don't make me tell you of the chat on IRC I had where I got banned from (this was a chat I started). These druggies decided to take over the chat. That was NOT a good time. NON XTC CONTENT I was wondering what you people have in your CD players. Well, I have in my CD-ROM I have A Sides & B Sides by Talk Talk, in my 3 disc CD player I have Big Express - XTC, Shock Treatment soundtrack and Running With Scissors - "Weird" Al Yankovic and in my bedroom's CD player I have The Hounds of Love - Kate Bush. I had The Dreaming in, but I was done listening. Kate has to be one of the best female singers ever. Molly Molly's Pages http://www.angelfire.com/mn/mollyfa99/index.html

Joe Funk, Steve Oleson and I met with filmmaker David Schneider of Los Angeles and a couple of his Austin friends at a Tex-Mex restaurant for dinner and great conversation. We were supposed to see Chalker Jason Garcia and his band Household Names last night, but a bad storm including rain, hail, and tornadoes kept us home (sorry Jason! What can we say? It's a more-than-welcome return - as perfect, poised and polished as one would expect; their songwriting is up to their usual obliquely brilliant standards, yet somehow different this time 'round - can't quite put my finger on it but there's something interesting at work there. Current faves are the title track (always a sucker for eccentric time signatures, me), and the utterly groovy "Jack Of Speed". Neat. BTW I recently saw the "Classic Albums" AJA episode, and laughed my guts out at Becker & Fagan's acerbic repartee. What a double act! They're like Woody Allen split into two people. Dunks

If you did, you would know that one of the things the characters do is compulsively make up Top 5 lists, and this has been incorporated into the film. At the website... http://studio.go.com/movies/highfidelity/top5/index_frame.html ... there are some various Top 5 lists, one of which our boys from Swindon appear on. "Sacrificial Bonfire" is on the list of "Top 5 Songs About Setting Stuff On Fire." By the way, I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie. = Derek = P.S. Thanks to Molly for having the weekly XTC listening parties. I was a Chalkhillian sometime back, dropped out when it became too much reading, but now I'm back. First of all, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to Peter and June, who spent many many years putting the xTc newsletter / Little Express together. I started subscribing in '83 with the Newsletter #14, and was hooked. They did a wonderful job, and I always looked forward to the next issue. They just got better and better, even in the lean times with no release to support, it was good reading. The title track to Gaucho is to me a minor masterpiece, but yeah, they were tired of it, and it shows. 2vN just gets better and better, just like AV1. > Off on the Kevin Gilbert tangent, haven't heard anybody else talk > about this, so I have to ask. I'm told KG also contributed a track to a Gentle Giant > tribute (actually an original, produced and arranged in the *style* > of GG), but I cannot confirm or deny this. Toy Matinee was Gilbert's best, although there is some good stuff on his solo "Thud". His previous band "Giraffe" had 2 albums, ther is a comp CD just out of that work. Giraffe once did the Genesis album "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" album live, there are CD's of that circulating. The Gentle Giant contribution is flat out hilarious! The song contributed is one of the songs from his soon to be released album, "The Shaming of the True". He also basically co-wrote one of Sheryl Crow's albums, and he produced and played on Marc Bonilla's "EE Ticket" as well as Keith Emerson's last solo cd. Toy Matinee is a must own album, IMO. Well, pretty off topic, but I'll stop for now. Bruce -- http://www.soltec.net/~moebius The Present Day Zappa Refuses to Decompose.

Mike Livingston wrote: "Have any of you ever tried to say Wasp Star five times fast? When I first heard the new name, I thought it was just the boys trying to trip up some of the lamer DJs out there. " I spoke with Andy a few days ago and he knows that some people have trouble with it. He agreed that DJs would simply say, "The new XTC CD" rather than actually stating the name and didn't think it would really be a problem. We also talked about his use of other cryptic descriptors in his lyrics. He agreed with the record company that the CD should have a different name than AVv1 but wanted it to have a connection (more than being subtitled AVv2), so he chose the name "Wasp Star." We joked about trying to trip up DJs and calling the CD "Yellow Leather, Yellow Leather, Yellow Leather." Andy added '...or maybe call it "Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry!"' ...um ...I don't think so. Robert Kulick wrote: "That should satisfy the idiot entomologist that came up with WASP STAR." Funk & Wagnall's Folklore Of Mythology And Legends lists the wasp as "...wise and cunning." Not a wholly irrelevent definition if taken with some of the possible definitions of "star." W.A.S.P. (as in White anglo-saxon Protestant) is as much a derogatory slang as "Yuppie." Additionally, prior to the acronym, a person called a "wasp" indicated that they had a slender waist. It could be an acronym for Sap Straw, Saw Strap or Past Wars. In case you missed my previous posting, "WASP STAR" _IS_ The Aztec incarnation of the goddess Venus (as in Apple Venus) MAYAN ARCEOASTRONOMY (http://www.glenbrook.k12.il.us/gbnsci/Astronom/astrono1/archeoas/studproj/central/maya.html) THE IMPORTANCE OF VENUS TO THE MAYANS: Venus was one of the most important "stars" observed by the ancient Mayan astronomers. There were ten names given to it: Noh ek which meant, "the great star" and Xux ek which meant, "the wasp star." Venus could be viewed in the morning so it was also refereed to as "the morning star." During the night, the Mayans used the Plaides and Gemini as guides to locate Venus when it was not visible to the naked eye. Through this method the Mayans were able to determine Venus' right ascension and declination at almost any time during the night even though it could only be seen in the morning. There are five synodical revolutions that the Mayans determined Venus made which averaged out to 583.920 days. In each synodical revolution, Venus went through four periods. During Venus' first revolution, it was considered the Morning Star for about 240 days by the Mayans. This was known as the "inferior conjunction." After this first revolution Venus disappeared in the Mayan sky completely for about 90 days. This period is referred to as the "superior conjunction." In the third period, Venus reappeared in the Mayan sky as an Evening Star for about 240 days. Then, after that, in the fourth period, Venus disappears again for about 14 days. Again, the disappearance of Venus is called a "inferior conjunction" as it was in the first period. The number of days in each of the four periods varies but when combined they average out 583.920 days or one synodical revolution. Andy was spending the evening looking through photos to include on the CD artwork. It is still unclear at this point if they will be doing any promotional work (i.e., travelling, shaking hands and kissing babies). By the way, "Pecham Rose" is a brand of matches used in a film that Andy saw and he thought it sounded nice. That's all there is to it. So all you horticulturists can stop scanning your Jackson-Perkins catalogs. We now return to your regularly schedule program, already in progress. I certainly hope you are all well. I see you that most are coming to terms with the new title...personally I couldn't ask for a better one. For one thing its got links to a "Pagan" religion, mayan this time, and hell its the name of the Venus God. So it's not like he's pulling it completely from thin air...Has anyone read the Hound Music Guide? If you look under Xtc you will find some ratings that would raise the ire of any fan. For one thing they only recommend Drums and Wires and Skylarking for starters. In the desription of the band they take up more space explaining who the Dukes are than the true band itself. But what makes me angry are the ratings they give other albums. TWO BONES for Oranges&Lemons I mean c'mon not everyone thinks it perfect (though I do) but two out of five bones? uuurrrghh! I think Nonesuch gets 2 1/2 bones. There are other atrocities but I digress...oh and don't worry the Orgone thread will take care of itself, our own inanity immune system will kick in and we'll start worrying about the new album more. Or more than we are now. I noticed that Av1 got some mixed reviews on Amazon.com from the fans actually. Mostly I think because it wasn't what they expected, and probably orchoustic was a bit middle of the road, soft rock, or older people music for their ears (though not for mine and most others). For those fans I think Av2 will be more "pop" for their tastes. I stand by the fact that age and experience CAN improve craft. I did write a glowing rewiew to balance out the reviews there. I think I might be getting the hang of this "posting" business...Do you think in the interviews for the *new* album they'll be able to talk about anything other than all that stinky "Virgin" business? I was re-reading some of the Av1 interviews and all that talk is a bit dpressing, kind of like hearing about your best friend's breakup...well let's see...Nope no more... Seth "Legally yours until Doomsday" Frisby (Yup that's me name!) p.s. Does anyone else have trouble with the subject line? I'm tempted just to write "Stuff about Xtc...more or less" for every one. I'm sure nice Mr.Relph would get annoyed though.
