A while back the topic was most underrated band, a category tailor-made for XTC, who got nary a mention, though Sammy Hagar, of all people, picked Tom Waits as one of his top three. The guy has more taste than I thought. It's a show that might have been a good idea if they picked more celebrities who actually had some intelligence, like Bill Maher did with Politically Incorrect when it was on Comedy Central. Bill would pick four different people he obviously respected and liked from four different aspects of the entertainment industry and have them square off on the political issues of the day. He would often have at least two people he knew would be diametrically opposed on certain issues, so sparks would often fly, though most of the time everybody was at least polite. It was rare that things would escalate into fistfights(I never saw it happen) like on Jerry Springer. Since he switched to late nights on ABC, though, the show hasn't been as interesting the few times I've stayed up for it. Christopher R. I know that this is a FAQ on the Chalkhills site, but is there somebody (in Japan?) who could help me in my quest to pick up a copy of Beeswax on CD. I have spoken to many sources in the UK who deal in imports, but to no avail. I know that all the tracks are available elsewhere, but this collection meant a great deal to me as a teenager getting into XTC for the first time. It would so like to get hold of a copy of this. Anybody who can help, please email me!! Many thanks Dave Wilson (Nottingham, UK)

It is through the dedication of serious fans such as myself that the truth is ferreted out for the benefit of list members such as yourself. To wit: The two current members of XtC have in their very own homes, as well as do ALL THREE former members, a device similar in shape and size to an Orgone Accumulator in every way, save for one subtle design variation. Their boxes, which I am given to referring to as "Orgone Disseminators" vary from an Accumulator only in that the organic material in on the inside, surrounded by a box made of inorganic metal. Proof that these objects really work is easily seen in the fact that they are substantially cooler inside, and therefore must be disseminating Orgone energy into the surrounding environment. The record companies manufactured goofy >groups who sung current pop hits in the US in Japanese The fans of course assumed the tunes were original . John, you wouldn't happen to have any examples of these, or maybe provide a link to someplace that sells them?... this sounds utterly hilarious. -------------------------- Someone gave me a record a few years ago by a band called the Spiders (I have a HUGE collection of strange lp's I call my 'tacky record collection', this one fits that description nicely). The Spiders are a Japenese pop band, circa mid '60's (most of the writing on the cover is in Japanese, so I don't know the exact date). The cover photo makes them look like the Japanese equivalent of Herman's Hermits, in matching mustard-colored velvet suits. While there are some original songs on the record, the best part of it to my ears are the cover tunes scattered throughout. They make a goofy mess of "Land of 1000 Dances", The Temptation's "Reach Out I'll Be There", an old Peter, Paul & MAry song called "Cruel War", John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom", and others. These are all done in a sort of British Invasion knockoff sound. The cover songs are in English, but it's obvious that their command of the language is rather dubious. Anyways, a fun record, thought you might enjoy hearing about it.

Tugging at my mind was the odd box from Idaho lying at my feet. Idaho? Sure, I lived there for two years (I couldn't wait to get away, as I recall), but who would send me a package from Idaho? Setting aside my shirtless dilemma for awhile, I opened the box to discover.........a shirt! And not just any shirt, but a bold green short sleeved Chalkhills shirt. A cosmic doorway intersection of the eddies in the space time continuum! As I slipped the shirt on I felt the power of the Uffington Horse flow into me. That's the thing about internet shopping. No instant gratification, but you get these little packages like presents from yourself at odd moments. I can't believe some folks have a problem with Chalkers bitching about the title Wasp Star. Hey, this is AN XTC LIST! This space is for sharing opinions about things related to XTC. Saying anything, positive or negative, or adding delightful side trips into pre-Columbian history of the Americas is all fair game. It's the new album title (well, until the next one comes along) It's what the list is for! Is Wasp Star harder to say than psonic psunspot? Tolkien's book "Roverandom" has a character called Psamathos Psamithides, which puts the the passing problem of the proper pronunciation of Wasp Star seem rather tame. Jim

Small world! The same issue also features interviews with other Chalkies like Ben Gott (the guy's a young pop maestro, serious biz) and MITCH FRIEDMAN, who also has a fabulously amazingly catchy and tuneful CD out right about now. The corker for some will be the Martin Newell cover story and attending 10 page interview! The interview is awesome and incredidbly insightful and educational for all fans of Newell. And I'm not just saying that because he actually *answered* my fake question: "So, you and Andy Partridge were lovers and that's why you both ended your relationships with women during the making of 'The Greatest Living Englishman,' right?" Although that's pretty cool too! The magazine will be out in two weeks or so... jet over to the AUTOreverse HQ for pre-ordering info if you wanna. And you know you do! Message-ID: <38CEDEE9.C0000B7C@mussmyhair.com> Personally, I think every track on Homespun surpasses those on AV1 - they won once and for all for their wonderable warmth. On the Mayan thread, I highly recommend a read of the singsong ole book called "LORD OF THE DAWN - Quetzalcoatl" by Tony Shearer. It is derived from the ancient Mayan prophesies carved in glyphs on jaguar bones. The whole thing has this sort of timeless ring throughout. By the way, I've stumbled across a few gems which I think many of you will find interesting: THE BEATLES - PEPPERLAND (VHS - NTSC) A comprehensive collection of miscellaneous footage throughout their "Pepper" era MONTY PYTHON - BEHIND THE SCENES (VHS - NTSC) Rare footage of the Pythons from Holy Grail through Baron Munchausen THE BEATLES IN PEPPERLAND (2CD) Different from the Silent Sea release - filled with rare sessions, interviews, demos, etc. Now... All these are incredible. I can get them for you if you have something to trade. Feel free to email me for the complete details. Still tick tock tickin' for the demo box set and the new Wasp Swap as well. - George Gescheider

Please, who is NOT going to buy a "new XTC release" because the title in their opinion is off-putting? And further, has it "ever" been your experience in your record buying habits to pass over a release based "soley" on the album's title? Bring back the orgone theory debates, I say. Come on , WASP STAR has got both of those beat , don't you > think ? > > Sushiman This is a variation on one of my early, desperate theories as to why it wasn't true that Dave was quitting the band. Would all the petulant I-quit-I'm-going-home door slamming tantrums during Skylarking have looked like this if there had been a Central Scrutinizer like the Web peering in at them all the time? Like that Farside cartoon with a couple of green bug-eyed aliens on some moonlike terrain: They've got two astronauts in a mason jar and one of them says, Shake the jar, let's see if they fight. Of course I was wrong. It wasn't that we were all shaking the jar . . . Also, I don't know if that was just a spiders web against my face, but I detect the faint presence of another thread, possibly called "album titles dumber than Wasp Star." My vote would be for White Music, since they had wanted to call it Black Music but they were strongly encouraged to change it. They should have just dropped the whole thing and gone with something---anything---else. Like "Captain Froot" "Venusian Blinds" "Yard" "Four Young Snots Get Up Your Nose" "Never Mind the Sex Pistols" (or would that last one be an anachronism?). The list could go on. nv ps/ speaking of wrong---yes, Steve, "Prisoners of the Sun" involves Incas, not Mayans. Slipped my mind in the heat of the moment.

Rest assured that, regardless of the title, I'll be buying at least 3 copies of the new cd. That being said, however, it seems to me that Andy's penchant for sabotaging his own success may be evident in the choice of this title, mainly because it will alienate your casual white anglo-saxon buyer by the title, since WASP does have negative connotations in the US. Its sort of like Wop Star, Kyke Star or Spick Star or whatever you choose. I seriously doubt wether this will alienate current fans, it might just make acquiring new fans a tad more difficult, but then again, XTC have always taken some getting used to (at least for me). I personally prefer music that I have to work a little hard to fully appreciate as opposed to stuff that is immediately appealing (not that there's anything wrong with that mind you). Andy shall always keep on being Andy. No unse expecting anything differently. Pancho XPRXTCFAN
