A while back the topic was most underrated band, a category tailor-made for XTC, who got nary a mention, though Sammy Hagar, of all people, picked Tom Waits as one of his top three. The guy has more taste than I thought. It's a show that might have been a good idea if they picked more celebrities who actually had some intelligence, like Bill Maher did with Politically Incorrect when it was on Comedy Central. Bill would pick four different people he obviously respected and liked from four different aspects of the entertainment industry and have them square off on the political issues of the day. He would often have at least two people he knew would be diametrically opposed on certain issues, so sparks would often fly, though most of the time everybody was at least polite. It was rare that things would escalate into fistfights(I never saw it happen) like on Jerry Springer. Since he switched to late nights on ABC, though, the show hasn't been as interesting the few times I've stayed up for it. Christopher R. John, you wouldn't happen to have any examples of these, or maybe provide a link to someplace that sells them?... this sounds utterly hilarious. -------------------------- Someone gave me a record a few years ago by a band called the Spiders (I have a HUGE collection of strange lp's I call my 'tacky record collection', this one fits that description nicely). The Spiders are a Japenese pop band, circa mid '60's (most of the writing on the cover is in Japanese, so I don't know the exact date). The cover photo makes them look like the Japanese equivalent of Herman's Hermits, in matching mustard-colored velvet suits. While there are some original songs on the record, the best part of it to my ears are the cover tunes scattered throughout. They make a goofy mess of "Land of 1000 Dances", The Temptation's "Reach Out I'll Be There", an old Peter, Paul & MAry song called "Cruel War", John Lee Hooker's "Boom Boom", and others. These are all done in a sort of British Invasion knockoff sound. The cover songs are in English, but it's obvious that their command of the language is rather dubious. Anyways, a fun record, thought you might enjoy hearing about it.

Hey, this is AN XTC LIST! This space is for sharing opinions about things related to XTC. Saying anything, positive or negative, or adding delightful side trips into pre-Columbian history of the Americas is all fair game. It's the new album title (well, until the next one comes along) It's what the list is for! Is Wasp Star harder to say than psonic psunspot? Tolkien's book "Roverandom" has a character called Psamathos Psamithides, which puts the the passing problem of the proper pronunciation of Wasp Star seem rather tame. Jim

Personally, I think every track on Homespun surpasses those on AV1 -
they won once and for all for their wonderable warmth.
On the Mayan thread, I highly recommend a read of the singsong ole book
called "LORD OF THE DAWN - Quetzalcoatl" by Tony Shearer. It is derived
from the ancient Mayan prophesies carved in glyphs on jaguar bones. The
whole thing has this sort of timeless ring throughout.

Rest assured that, regardless of the title, I'll be buying at least 3 copies of the new cd. That being said, however, it seems to me that Andy's penchant for sabotaging his own success may be evident in the choice of this title, mainly because it will alienate your casual white anglo-saxon buyer by the title, since WASP does have negative connotations in the US. Its sort of like Wop Star, Kyke Star or Spick Star or whatever you choose. I seriously doubt wether this will alienate current fans, it might just make acquiring new fans a tad more difficult, but then again, XTC have always taken some getting used to (at least for me). I personally prefer music that I have to work a little hard to fully appreciate as opposed to stuff that is immediately appealing (not that there's anything wrong with that mind you).
