Any pictures on the web for this gig?
Do you mean wrong for dumping Gregster or that Hey Jude gives goosenipples?

also, someone said something about a web page of fans versions of xtc
covers.... does this exist and is it legal? At mp3.com they say no cover
tunes can be uploaded :-(
I would love to find out where this would be ok, I have a few that could be
finished (will shoot for the mp3CD too).

Here's the quick story Chalkhills.

When is $10 off not $10 off ? When you shop at CDNow.

I order 2 CD's using a legitimate $10 off URL from CDNow.

$12.49 + $4.49 = $16.98 for the two CD's
            plus $6.42 for shipping
           minus $10.00 off
          equals $13.40 for 2 CDs.

They ship one and one is put on backorder.

Order confirmation. October 1, 1999.
Shipment confirmation. October 5, 1999.
First backorder notice. Nov. 1, 1999.
Second backorder notice. Dec. 1, 1999.
Third backorder notice. Dec 31, 1999.

Jan. 4, 2000. Item on backorder is listed a new item on website.
June 23, 2000. Another backorder notice.
June 26, 2000. I start to lose my patience.
September 5, 2000. Dean Martin "Legendary" CD listed as new item on site.
The second time since my original order.
                                 "artistid=MARTIN*DEAN/itemid=650248"
I inquire why CDNOW won't fill my backorder.
September 6, 2000. CDNow informs me the CD in question was sent to me &
I should go ask my neighbours to see if they have it.
September 7, 2000. Lisa at CDNOW "must do some further investigation".
September 8, 2000. CDNow claim they didn't charge my credit card.
September 20, 2000. I show you clearly I did not receive the 2nd CD.
September 20, 2000. I prove thru CD-Now e-mails that missing CD was on
                                 backorder and never mailed.
September 21, 2000. CDNow require scan of VISA statement for proof.
September 25, 2000. CDNow are sent scan of my VISA statement.
October 3, 2000. CDNow say I wasn't charged for second CD.
October 3, 2000. CDNow make up new invoice without second CD on it.
                            Subtotal: $ 12.49
                            Shipping: $ 3.51
                             $10 off: $ 2.60-
                          Sales Tax: $ 0.00
                                            ----------
                      Shipment Total: $ 13.40

October 4, 2000. CDNow tell me to shop elsewhere for the CD.
October 4, 2000. CDNow re-send original invoice and ask for URL I used.
October 5, 2000. CD-NOW sends e-mail with special URL to use to order.
Isn't that what started this mess. The special URL.

October 11, 2000. I wrote...

"I see it as this:

I order 2 CDs. You only send one so you don't have to honour your
$10 off URL that I used. As sinple as that. The URL was the hook
just to get me in the door. Since I only ordered two CD's, you could
just not send me one, and then the $10 off URL would be void.
That's how you do business. That's fine. I understand.
I'll just let everyone else I know how you do business.
I'll send you a copy of the story too.
I'm sure you'll find the truth amusing."

That's what happened to me with CDNow.
My first on-line shopping experience.
Buyer beware. Happy Christmas shopping.

Hi Gang,

Not been round much recently and haven't had time to read every list -
hell, I may not have time to even read the list This letter appears in
which would be a shame cos I'll miss the advert!!!!!

XTC were just on Top Of The Pops 2 (Wednesday 8th November 6.25pm)

It should therefore be repeated on Saturday BBC2.

It's NOT the video of Senses Working Overtime we've all seen, but
their happy performance in the TOTP studios. So very happy they look
too. Andy is looking straight at camera, looking as relaxed and as in
control as you can imagine. Really performing the song too. It's a
joy.

The words that came up on the screen (I'm typing as fast as they
appear) went something like:

"XTC are major contenders for Daftest Album Title award, with titles
like
Apple Venus Wasp Star and Rag & Bone Buffet, Upsy Daisy Assortment and
Tiny Circus of Life. Pretty Damning we think you'll agree. The next
album - a boxed set - is to be called Fuzzy Warbles."

Yeah?

Message-ID: <OE24aJbqJGNzscE8Npq00000305@hotmail.com>

Hi Chalkhillians,

I wanted to pass along my thoughts on "The Orchid Show" VHS (Neta Dance
Company), which I know has been advertised in some recent digests. I
ordered it last week and it arrived promptly several days ago... now, I
suppose being a fan of modern dance is not necessary for enjoyment of this
show (I prefer classical ballet myself - elaborate sets and so forth), but
an enjoyment of XTC is certainly a requirement if "artsy" stuff isn't your
cup of tea (or glass of stout, as case may be).

The tape is in three parts: 1. River of Orchids (performance of said-song)
2. Apple Venus (a collection of songs from AV1 + "War Dance" from Nonsuch)
and then [after a supposed intermission] "The Orchid Show" featuring the
music of XTC, among others.

I really enjoyed watching this. My roommate (who happens to love XTC --
though he's not quite so rabid as I) walked into the room during "Fruit Nut"
and thought it was simply "silly" watching all the "yard-working motions" of
the dancers. It must be noted that he dislikes the "fine arts" in general,
and dance in particular. He watched (visibly amused) for several minutes
before leaving me to watch by myself (an arrangement I think I preferred).

The music is not overpowering (you can tell the sound is live rather than
overdubbed) and I toyed briefly with the idea of synching up my AV1 CD on my
stereo with the performances on tape for "full effect". But make no
mistake, it comes through very clearly. Also, the service that recorded
this for the NDC employed several cameras, and thus the edits are efficient
and very classy. You don't miss any of the action; this is FAR from a
"shaky camcorder in the back row" production. It's really very
well-executed.

Some pieces, like "Knights in Shining Karma", are beautiful two-person
dances - "River of Orchids" has one dancer. The whole set has very sparse
and minimal lighting / decor, and the dancers occassionally move from slow,
expressive gestures to strange "jogging-in-place" motions that were a bit
jarring to me (I'll admit complete my ignorance of modern dance).
Occasionally I found myself wanting something a little more - something a
little more baroque, maybe. More shamelessly acrobatic. Something
grander, with more sets, more music. The music of XTC is so expansive and
visual that it seems to scream above dark lighting and lightly bobbing
bodies. Don't get me wrong - it was all very classy (and a dream come true
if you love AV1) but I've always had my own "yellow submarine"-style video
fantasies for Andy and Colin's creations, and this certainly does not
attempt anything in that direction. More power to them! I'm happy to have
anything at all like this in my collection. I'm sure repeat viewings will
increase my appreciations for the show.

The tape includes a nice postcard and several programs from the show. It's
a little bit "homespun", and I mean that as a compliment.

I heartily recommend this to everyone, even if you're just curious.

~~Steve

Whilst slumped in front of the TV last night nursing my first cold of the
winter, I received the perfect tonic. There on TOTP2 were none other than
XTC performing 'Senses Working Overtime'. THis from its original release in
early 1982. Furthermore, I seem to recall that the show in question was
compered by none other than John Peel who, if memory serves me right,
introduced them as 'those loveable mop-tops from Swindon'. All those
chalkers who can get UK terrestrial TV channels Aare likely to find this
show being repeated sometime on Saturday afternoon, so if you are around,

Got that one, too. E me, and we'll talk, 'kay?

Our schizoid pal Simon Deane/Gina Chong (what groups do you contribute
to as Gina? Hmmm...?) waxed (his bikini line) eloquently about "Harvest
Festival":
> One can imagine the emotions of the narrator as he sits in church watching
> the same two from all those years ago getting married, of what might have
> been, but in the end he wishes them well, resigned to his own fate but
> big-hearted enough ultimately to feel nothing but goodwill. One not only

I wholeheartedly agree. I think the brilliance of the song lies in this
ambiguity -- that's one of the things that makes it such a rich
listening experience. Like all great art, the song lays itself open to
its audience and allows them the room to participate. I didn't mean to
imply in my post that the hopefulness I talked about was The Way it had
to be viewed -- only that it could be interpreted that way.

Simon/Gina has done a fine job of bringing together the animus and anima
of this song. And for that, I wish you both well.

-Todd

Thanks for your input, Amy. It's been included in our tally, but due to
the recount currently underway in Florida (and the threat of further
legal action), there'll be no announcement about which album has won for
quite some time.

Good Morning Chalkhills Folks.

My last posting to the Chalkhills mailing list, which I also sent
to CDNow has had some effect.

My bad word-of-mouth around Christmas got CDNow thinking.
Read this. I got this e-mail from CDNow yesterday afternoon.

Dear Brent,

Thank you for your reply.

I apologize for any misunderstanding regarding the amount you were
charged for order number 12382229.

Our initial records do indicate you were charge $6.00 for the order,
BUT, I checked our secondary records and found you were charge in the
amount of $13.40. I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you.

You were credited for $2.60 of the $10.00 discount. I'm not sure why the
full amount of the discount was applied to the charge.

I am requesting a refund in the amount of $7.40 to be applied to your
credit card. This refund should be completed within the a week's time
(most likely within the next 48 hours.)

Please be assured that even though the one Dean Martin title was
cancelled from your order, we would still make every intention of
applying the discount to your order. We do show that you have the $10
discount for the order, but it appears, however, that there was an error
with the discount not being applied to the charge amount.

We attempt to fill backordered items as quickly as possible. I apologize
if that was not done with your order. Again, please be assured, it's not
because we do not want to extend any discounts to our customers.

I hope this helps and again, I apologize for any misunderstanding and
inconvenience.

Should you have any additional questions or comments, do not hesitate to

contact me.

Sincerely,

Audra

If you have speakers, you can hear a faint sucking sound.....

who buy music did they relent. 13 months later.

I doubt I will rush out to order from them again.
Dozens and dozens of e-mails back and forth.
Lousy customer service, lame excuses & boldfaced lies
is all I got until I started to share my shopping experience
around the holiday shopping season to the two music

Hi:

Glorious best birthday wishes to Andrew Partridge, who will be (or is,
depending on when this post, um, posts) 47, and to Nancy Bernhardt, my
daughter, who will be 2!

Yes, and Veteran's Day...

-Todd

excuse me, but i was not referring to _that_.
No use crying over spoilt milk and besides: Dave left the band; he
wasn't pushed out.

No, i was thinking about about Andy's recent remarks how a live
concert is at best a mediocre version of the record. I've argued here
before that it is of course the other way around: the stage is the
natural habitat for popular music, and musicians like to play.

You should have seen how our Dave really "got going"; after some
initial pedal problems during the first songs of the main show you
could actually see how each song made him feel a little better and
more confident. And then he just shined on and on; conjuring up the
most magical tones and solos and some pretty nifty e-bow playing
too.

And this band of friends also demonstrated that it is very much
possible to do just the one-off gig every once in a while. Without the
truckloads of gear, multi-million budgets and gruelling schedules.
Just for fun - now isn't that what it's supposed to be all about?
