Their lyrics to me are similar to XTC, they're very quirky, yet thoughtful. Take their latest single, "Pinch Me". This song has XTC written all over it, at least to me. But before I get to the part about gifts, please allow me
a selfless plug. Sir Demon Brown's band, Elf Power! is now on
tour! They were in Dallas,TX. Nov.1st. I don't know their tour
schedule so, when you look in the 'weekend cool stuff' section
of your local paper, and you see some club has Elf Power! Let
it be known, a 'Hiller! is in your village!
Now, about those 'gifts'. Look at this like one of those PBS
pledge drives. Nobody really contributes for the 'Moody Blues
Live at Red Rock' Video. Also keep in mind "funny (not size)
matters!"
So in keeping with the tradition, I'd be remiss if I didn't
make it clear, that, comma, the funniest (IMO) poster,if,they
wish,comma, will find several CDRs from my extremely modest
erec...er...collection of the unusual in their bo...er......
mail box cu...er... come mid December,er,er.
Time permitting,some runners up should also look forward to
an unusual looking package (from VeeTube) around the same time.

Thanks to Harrison Sherwood, Rich Hamilton and Bodd Ternhardt for their
recent comments on "Harvest Festival". This song is quite simply a pop
masterpiece.
I thoroughly enjoyed these comments although I cannot agree with Rich's, nor
completely with Harrison's (wonderful fellow though he most certainly is),
analyses. As for Bodd, I suggest you stick to abusing BM. In the
circumstances I thought I'd offer my interpretation of this wonderful song.
The way I see it, the narrator is your eternal under-achiever, looking back
wistfully on one of his few "successes": the fact that the school's star
pupil may once have (perhaps) secretly fancied him. (As an aside, I'm fairly
sure that he wasn't one of "the two who [had] been chosen" - they're
referred to in the third person as if he's watching from the congregation.)
He _may_ have debated whether or not that longing look was a figment of his
imagination; it _may_ not have even been reciprocated by him - cf. "there's
no way I'm going to go out with that toffee-nosed snob". What's for sure is
that the look was never "consummated" - he had to make do with it for the
rest of the year; and it was possibly one of his few claims to fame - see
above ("the school's star pupil fancies me even though I'm bottom of the
class"), something to be (possibly secretly) proud of.
Time goes by and, predictably, she succeeds and moves on and he fails and
stays in his home town in a dead-end job. Then "out of nowhere" the wedding
invitation. It is two things at once: vindication - "that really was a
longing look and she remembered me after all this time"; but also a reminder
of his own failure. And those 5 words which for me transform the song from
merely remarkable to something truly sublime "...and I wish you well". I
find these words almost impossibly moving whenever I listen to the song.
One can imagine the emotions of the narrator as he sits in church watching
the same two from all those years ago getting married, of what might have
been, but in the end he wishes them well, resigned to his own fate but
big-hearted enough ultimately to feel nothing but goodwill. One not only
admires this poor guy but also sympathises with him. Those 5 words are
invested with so much meaning that, as Todd and Harrison have already
remarked, one can only wonder at the genius of the writer - he only needed
5, short, simple words to say all that?
And having said all that, in the words of Chris Conroy, I really like the
tune too.

There has been an interesting artefact advertised there for the last couple of weeks, which is well worth the price of entry. It being the 3DCD. This comprises a couple of gigs from the Andrews (and pre-White Music) era, an assortment of early demos and an amusing Partridge recollection of the early days to round out proceedings. I am in no way affiliated with this project (I merely read the ad and duly responded) but....this is quite possibly the most elaborate bootleg I have ever seen, XtC or otherwise. The quality is astounding, particularly the packaging which is almost of a calibre to convince you it's an official release. It even comes with its own pair of 3D glasses ferchrissakes!!! As well, the gigs themselves shed a new light on the Andrews era XtC. This is definitely not my favourite line-up, but the gigs demonstrate their anarchic energy perfectly, which was never fully captured on record to my thinking. If you're at all interested, get in contact with the affable Sam (samspam@supanet.com). I get the distinct impression this bootleg is a real labour of love for him, and you can certainly tell.
