If you haven't visited the XTC Live and direct web site yet, do so and
check out the Dukes demos.

Can you imagine what they would sound like live?! I had become so used
to the over-produced studio sound that this was pleasantly shocking to
consider... maybe AV2 will rekindle more in this vein.

Can the fighting and arguing on Chalkhills please cease??? When I first
started reading Chalkhills it was chock-full of great info. Now it's
degenerating into childish namecalling and excessive foul language.

Satanas (or whoever you are), if you've got a real problem with anyone on
the list, tell Mr. Relph. In fact, I'm going to e-mail John when I'm done
with this. Or, keep it between the offender & yourself.

It's o.k. to conflict on issues concerning XTC or music in general here...
but it should never been mean spirited. I've 'argued' my points before
(see: Brian Wilson) but I looked at it as a spirited debate... nothing
done in hate or anger.

This crap has gotta stop.

Thanks in advance,

Actually, the only things that are completely cruelty-free to eat are
that which is totally artificial. So let's get out the Kool-aid now, folks,
and wash it down with a healthy serving of Cool Whip!

From: "Diamond" <arnos@nantucket.net>

Hello fellow XTC fans and fan-ettes

I'm back from Thanksgiving. I ended up coming home a day early. I had a
great time, ate too much, all the good stuff. TWO HELPINGS OF PIE!!!
That's living!!!

Now, about my first gig. It went surprisingly well, considering what
happened before the show even started. my partner in this band, the
synthesist and co-vocalist, got a little bit of that Partridge
stage-fright. The only difference was that he wasn't on stage yet. The
day of the performance, he called me up and said he wasn't going to
perform because he was nervous. I still wanted to perform, but he was
really against it. The coffee house we were going to preform at is run by
our band teacher, and we work there even when we aren't performing. So, he
came, but without his synthesizer or our drum machine, so the only
instrument we had with us was my bass.
Luckely, when he got to the coffee house, the stage fright wore off,
and he decided to play anyways. Unfortunetly, we had no synthesizer for
him to play. We asked everyone who was there if they had any type of key
instrument (synth, keyboard, piano...) and, luckely, one of them had what
he called a "Salvation Army Organ" at his house. He went home to get it,
and we waited behind stage, hoping he would hurry up.
the "Salvation Army organ" was quit surprising, and not at all what we
expected. It was about the size of a cat, and looked like it was just a
solid box. There were hinges on the back, and it opened up to show two
octaves of keys and a bunch of little buttons like are found on an
accordian. It was called a "Pianorgan" a compination of a piano and an
organ, I guess, but we all called it the penis organ, cause that's what it
sounded like to us when we pronounced it. (Boy, we're a barrel full of
laughs, aren't we?) We played the three songs I told you about a couple of
C-Hill's ago, and did very well. Plus, my mom vtaped it, so she has
something to send to Before They Were Rock Stars when I become famous (and
I WILL become famous, mark my words.

By the way, does anyone know what XTC's first gig was? What did they play?
I'm sure It's in Song Stories somewhere, but I'm to bored to get up and
look.

I saw TS2 today.
The first movie was an incredible piece of work.
TS2 blows the first one away.

As for the Randy Newman music, I didn't pay THAT much attention, but I
will say that a song from the first movie is reprised in a rather fun

While it's true that there is good evidence Christ was not born in
December -- winter, after all, is not a good time to conduct a census -- I
hardly think Tom Robbins is a good authority to cite on any issue of

Andy , Colin , Gregsy and Ian G. have lived in Swindon for most of
their lives ; who cares if it is not the center of the cultural
universe ? For me it would be a thrill just to walk down the same
streets they do ; have a few pints at pubs they frequent ; and meet
with the locals . I recall being in a central London pub way back in
1978 , and mentioning to someone I had met that the next day I was
heading on up to Muswell Hill ( North London ) to spend a few days
there . His reaction was : " Muswell Hill ?? Why would ANYBODY want to
go there ? " . I explained that I had always dreamed of walking the
streets of The Kinks' and Fairport Convention's Muswell Hill , two of
my fave groups ( at the time ) ; and that it was a bigger thrill for
me than seeing the Queen or exploring The Tower Of London ... On my
way up to Quebec back in 1992 I visited the hometown of my literary
hero Jack Kerouac - Lowell , Massachusetts . Now , all you New
Englanders out there probably know that Lowell ain't much ; but I had
to see the city that gave us that mad , genius Jack ( and of course
pay my respects at his gravesite )...

Swindon , Muswell Hill , Lowell ; these places - for better or for
worse - played a huge role in the aforementioned geniuses lives ; and
had an impact on the music and literature created by them ; therefore
it is only natural that a fan would want to take the time to drop in
for a look around when passing through . How many hundreds of
thousands of fans have flocked to Memphis SINCE Elvis died ? Or
Liverpool ? Our boys still live , sleep , eat , breathe and create in
Swindon ; so next time you are in the neighborhood pay it a visit.
And why not ?

Hope the gig went well Dom you missed a great pub-party last night. So

Hope you all have a great millennium season good people. When I return
29th Jan 2000 and resubscribe I don't expect you guys to be bickering

Subject: Top 100 Albums of 1999

Another victory of art over commerce. Amazon.com just put up a listing of
the top 100 albums of 1999 (for all genres of music) and guess who filled
in slot # 11. I personally would have put AV1 in the top ten (just above
Richard Thompson's Mock Tudor which was I think was number 6. Beth Orton
was #1 which seems deserved). What was really interesting were the albums
that didn't make the list (including some by some pretty heavy weight pop
artists).

A nice reminder that you don't have to sell 20 million copies to be
recognized.

On another note: Sometime back there was a complaint about the bonus
tracks being on the middle of the CDs. While that's not an ideal spot
(although some, like the bonus tracks for Big Express and Drums and Wires
don't sound out of place), it's better than not getting them at all. I
have the feeling with all the mergers we'll see more reissues like the
Bowie catalog. They remastered the entire catalog using 24 bit technology,
but dropped ALL the bonus tracks from every CD. A bit of a rip off for the
fans.

So, what do all the fans of the Dukes of Stratospear, Spinal Tap, and
Ziggy Stardust lurking out there think about Garth Brooks's little
identity-creation experiment known as Chris Gaines?

[For those not in the know: Garth Brooks is a big-selling country singer
who has invented a rock star persona by the name of Chris Gaines, and
created an entire history for the character, portraying it in a
"documentary" aired on VH-1 entitled "Behind the Life: Chris Gaines",
which disguises the hoax in a manner similar to that of the famous Orson
Welles 1929 (?) radio broadcast of "War of the Worlds". Brooks stars in
the program as Gaines, and is launching a tour including a Saturday Night
Live appearance under this alias, to promote release of new pop/rock music
under the false name, all apparently as a means of launching a career in
another genre. The supporting label has launched web sites, both official-
and unofficial-seeming to back up the fiction.]

I have to say, it smacks of a fundamental dishonesty to me, but is it
really any different from the Dukes? What say ye?
