he is the man ; despite being a bass player i have no idea what or why he
played what he did but i would recommend anything from the 64 (?) european
tour with dolphy and byard ; at the paris concert he stops pianist byard and
redirects his playing during his charlie parker tribute 'parkeriana'. he had
amazing drive and pushed his band to the limit where the sound is close
violence. it makes miles davis sound rather pedestrian.

In a rock context this does not work and this would apply to the likes of
Jack Bruce whilst in cream. I have far more time for Felix Papparlardi who
played very melodic yet simple stuf and had a wonderful sound. Other great
US bass players include Chris Hillman, Jack Casady, Phil Lesh and Rick
Danko.

THE BEACH BOYS
Can we call a truce ?

I think we have  a problem here because some people find it very difficult
to accept that their heroes (XTC) could have ever listened to something as
naff as the beach boys.

It's not uncommon.

Fans of  clapton, beck and page have to accept that their heroes would have
grown up listening to turkeys like bert weedon and hank marvin and would
cite them as influences. Robert plant had the good sense to admit once (and
once only) the brilliance of Om Kolthoum. it's life.

The actual title of the film is "The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T", which
is (as far as I know) the only "live-action" Dr. Seuss film ever made
-- with sets and all very much in the standard Dr. Seuss-esque style.

Interestingly, Hans Conreid is the actor who played Dr. Terwilliger
in the above mentioned "5,000 fingers of Dr. T"!  The plot of which
is that a young boy, son of a widow, is forced to take piano
lessons from a certain Dr. Terwilliger.  One day, a serviceman (I
can't remember for sure, I *think* he was a piano tuner, but I could
be mistaken) comes to the house, and interacts with the boy, who
then, falling asleep, finds himself sent to this nightmarish
piano-camp run by the fiendish Dr. T, along with 499 other boys (500
boys times 10 fingers = 5,000 fingers that Dr. T means to have
playing his one giant keyboard)!  Dr. T also has the boy's mom
captive (and apparently has designs on her), when along comes the
heroic piano-tuner to help rescue the enslaved boys and sweep the mom
off her feet.

My most sincere apologies and regrets for having contributed something
even remotely considered to be a "show tune".  Apparently that's what
happens when a geeky white guy attempts a pseudo blues rendition of
a pop song.  Please excuse me if I don't inform my expat (and very black)
blues piano player from Chicago.  If he were to know he participated
in a project categorized as such, I'm concerned he might burn his Ebony
collection and join the Salvation Army Band.  Of course this does shed
some light as to why he never invites me to jam ...

I suggest to those of you as yet CC '96-less, show tunes aside, to get
off your collective ass and order this most surprising and enjoyable
collection.  It's not just for contributors and (obsessive) completists.

And thanks to the mighty Richard P.-A. for the hours of labor and the
good sense to insist on digital contributions ... and the lack of sense
to think that CC '97 will actually come out on schedule.  :)

Most people reserving a song for CC97 said, "When am I supposed to do
what?"

(Sorry... >burp< ...it made complete sense to me at the time...)

If you will be contributing to CC97, email me that you are sending the
tape two days before you actually drop it in the mail.

To reserve your song... you're probably already too late.  Email me to
find out.  As of 10:00 a.m., June 23 (less than 12 hours after
Chalkhills Digest was mailed) I am TWO songs shy of a full tape.  I will
accept reservations from people who are willing to be on a waiting list
(keep in mind that you won't get extra time to record your song) in case
people drop out.

In any event, I'm very surprised at the response!  I never expected the
flood of reservations and I know that several people have asked me
months and weeks ago to be part of "the next one" but I made them wait
for the "Official Announcement."  Tis a bummer for those who don't read
their Chalkhills Digest IMMEDIATELY!  I don't know how else to manage
this project... I always seem to frustrate somebody...

As far as the name goes... Chalkhills' Children won some sort of contest
held on Chalkhills.  I can't say I'm really charmed with the name but as
far as I'm concerned, it will be the name of the "series."  If someone
wants to run a contest and tally up votes for a "subtitle" name (i.e.
"Chalkhills' Children 97: Don't Ring Us"), go for it.  By the way, if
nobody runs a contest, THAT will be the name of the tape.  "Don't Ring
Us..." (from the BBC Live CD: Andy's response to the fans singing the
intro to Respectable Street) is what I was initially going to call CC96.

        Hey ho,

                All this talk on bass players fairly recently, and upon
reading an old article in L.E. praising Colin's playing, has got me to
thinking.  I believe, somebody correct me if I'm wrong, that Andy pretty
much has a solid idea on how he wants his bass lines to go.  I don't think
Colin writes bass lines for Andy's tunes.  This old L.E. article was
praising Colin's bass figures in Black Sea but I kinda have a feeling that
he just acted as a player.  Not to put down Colin's ability, he is a great
player; but I don't think XTC's music lends itself to virtuostic extended
bass solos.  We can't really tell how good Colin can play just by listening
to XTC.  Jaco Pastorious' music, on the other hand, does lend itself to
viruostic playing, and his ability was revealed.  I wouldn't mind hearing
Colin take a stab at Jaco's music, I'm sure he'd be great at it.  I'm just
saying somebody's playing can't be fully judged if the music itself
constrains the full potential.  Colin's bass writing can be really nice,
though, as in "One Of The Millions."
                Somebody way back mentioned "Ben Folds Five" as being a
muppet conspiracy.  I personally think "Hanson" is, myself.

                The "Five Frozen Fingers of Dr.T" mentioned by Andy on
Simon's last post I believe should be "The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T."  It's, I
believe the only live-action Dr. Seuss movie out there.  It's certainly a
strange movie; it's basically about a little boy's nightmare about piano
lessons; kind of a cult favorite around my house.

Greetings.
First things first: I'm not Amanda. My name is Owen.
As odd as it might seem, given what I'll be passing along, this is my first
post. Having struck up a correspondence with Amanda, I recieved the
following by with the simple request to pass it along to our readership.
Without further ado...

The Date: June 12
The Place: Golden Corral Restaurant, Marrero, LA (aka Amanda's place of
employment).
The scene: I was mopping the floors. I was a bit pissed I hate mopping. the
music is playing. The next song comes on and I'm strainig to hear it. I'm
still trying to make it out, when I hear "...everyone's creeping up to the
money god...". I stop dead in my tracks amd mumble "Oh my God" a few times.
I then drop my mop and run to my floor managers. I say: "If you don't mind
me asking a dumb question, where do you guys get the music from?" One of
them says, "It's brought in by satellite", to which I reply "Because this is
my favorite band and I'm surprised to hear them being played as restaurant
muzak." The other one says "Who is it? Barry Manilow?" I say, "No, it's XTC.
They're from England, but you've probably never heard of them." One of them
says, "oh yeah, 'Dear God'." The other one says, "I remember them from the
early '80's." I was happy mopping from then on.

The reason I haven't posted before is that I've scanned these digest more
for info on where the band was at than to discuss the things that are
discussed. Not that there is much wrong with the discussions. On the
contrary, most of them are at least interesting, unlike a couple of the
other e-mail lists I belong to.
But now, having dipped my toes in for the first time, I will surely return
from lurkdom.

Three things before I go:

1. "Pet Sounds" is amazing, and at the very least worth a listen. Prepare to
be  inspired.
2. Here in Northern California, the perfect summer album would have to be
Skylarking, followed by O&L. Warm days and blue skies forever on both.
3. The new demos are incredible. Whatever form the new album comes in, I'm
sure that none of us will be dissapointed.

Anybody know if the latest Little Express  is out yet?

I saw the Upsy Daisy disc at the Tower records and nearly jumped out of my
sneakers.  Then I saw that it was just another compilation of songs from
albums I have already.  Yeargh!  Why doesn't that moronic giant Virgin at
least slap one demo/live/bonus/whatever track on it so that I might even
consider buying it?  It's been too long between XTC albums, and this is
what we get?  I'm so cranky that I like to go down to the local Virgin
Megastore and stomp on the Virgin logo that's set into the floor there.
And I too think the cover art is doofy.

I'm only slightly shored up by the 5 hours XTC video I watched yesterday.
I was beginning to think that I was (gasp!) tired of XTC!!  Well, I won't
make that mistake again.  But Life Begins at the Hop is STILL a cheesy
video.

Hi, Chalkhillers;

I have not posted here in a dog's age.  I know recent posts have given
details of the Geffen compilation as it was in the works, wussy artwork and
all.

I just wanted to put in my two cents on the real product.
Yes... the artwork is Lame & Stupid, and hardly conjures up the image of
our lads' career, but at least the guys appeared in photo on the inside
cover.

With the inclusion of just a few "near" singles in this otherwise singles
collection, this single cd takes on a different character than its 2-disk
UK counterpart, "Fossil Fuel".

Without bothering with the ultra high energy of the "White Music/Go2"
stuff, the disk starts up with the more refined "Drums & Wires" singles and
takes the pedestrian path through "English Settlement".  The conventions
bend a little after that with the inclusion of "Funk Pop a Roll" from
"Mummer", "Seagulls..." from "TBE", "Earn Enough for Us" from "Skylarking",
and "Chalkhills & Children" from "O&L".  All the official singles from
these albums appear as well, but the inclusion of these few odd tracks make
this a very satisfying single cd for me.  Improvement in sound quality is
debatable, but it is very good as it is.

To the best of my knowledge, Disque Bleu was only released on the fan club
cassette, "Jules Verne's Sketchbook". "Goosey, Goosey" was a Nonsuch demo
outtake that never made it to fruition (but it's never too late, right?).

Of the demos you mentioned, LIAHH and TGT are the only "officially"
released demos. Both can be found on the UK Mayor of Simpleton CD single
(along with Ella Guru).

Any further info on the possible Belew/Partridge collaboration?

At least in the U.S., this was titled "The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T." It's
about a little boy who hates his piano teacher (that's Dr. T.), and goes to
sleep one night and has a rather mind-blowing nightmare about being enslaved
with hundreds of other boys, forced to work on this *enormous* piano, owned
by the aforementioned Dr. T. There are all sorts of Fritz-Langian montages
of Dr. T. and his many thousands of fingers. And I don't remember the boy's
name in the movie, but he was played by Tommy Rettig, child-star of TV's
"Lassie."

I didn't know it was huge in France...

...and who also played -- you guessed it -- Dr. T.!

I doubt the title was "Five Frozen Fingers" in the UK or even France --
perhaps this indicates that Andy himself didn't type this list, but dictated
it to someone else who mistook Andy's Swindonian way of saying "thousand" as
"frozen"? Hmmm...

Less interestingly, Dr. T's was also the name of a software company that
used to produce KCS MIDI Sequencer software for the Atari ST, the same
computer that both Andy Partridge and I use to record songs. However, Andy
uses Steinberg software and I use Hybrid Arts SMPTE-Track, so this is
somewhat less germane.

So how do I remember all this stuff? Sheesh!

Hola.

Regarding the "Andy must be schooled in music!" thread, I don't think
you need to have an incredible technical knowledge of the way music
works to come up with interesting chord patterns.  These chords have
existed before.  I think Andy has a keen AWARENESS of music which
enables him to incorporate what he's heard into unique ways of
expression that may or may not be "complex" from a technical
standpoint.  I can't speak for Andy, but I know that in my own
experience as a songwriter I tend to try to look for new ways of
getting to a particular chord or new ways of playing that chord
just to change it a little, you know, 'cause you get bored of the
same old thing.  Not that the "same old thing" is bad (I'm sure
Andy doesn't think so; there's nothing particularly remarkable,
chord-wise, about something like "I'd Like That"), but it's like
life, you just keep wanting to try new things.

I'm starting to get philosophical;  look out.

I acquired the "new demos" and loved that song, thought it sounded
slightly Beach Boys.  Then I got the "Pet Sounds Sampler" CD with
the stereo version of the album and all the remixed things and
thought, this song is REALLY Beach Boys.  He really nails the
Brian Wilson impression on the "WITH the swirling sky..." bits.

I just got a drum machine!  It's quite exciting.

Also, if anyone's interested, one of my songs is currently being
played on the 'Net as part of the Demo Derby.  Anyone who wants to

Chalkies!

Konnichi wa from Osaka, Japan. Excited to hear that the Rifff! show was
such a blast.  Didn't get a chance to listen to it, though, since I was
waiting for my new computer to arrive...am looking forward to the
transcript when it becomes available.

As far as contributing to CC '97, I cannot play an instrument well
enough to save my wretched soul, but if some of my Chalkhill friends
in Japan are thinking of doing a song, perhaps I can volunteer my
Mouldin-esque vocal chords to one of them! Any Chalkies in Japan who
think they might do one (Steve? Naoyuking?Miwa-chan?)  then, by all
means, e-mail me, and let's get together/FireballXL5? :-)

And ,  what's this about the band singing with an offshoot of Virgin?
someone tell me this is only  a rumor!

P.S. I know this is like way belated, but congrat and kudos go out to
the multi-faceted, exteremly talented Becki Di Gregorio and Friends.
Check out the songs _among us_ and _one in ten_, not to mention
Inside the Dream (Dave's unique guitar signatures are not _that_
subtle; quite pronounced, IMHO, but it is true that it doesn't overwhelm
the song; more like an added flavor to make it that much sweeter).

On my PowerMac it plays until I open an application then it jumps back to
song #1, it does the same thing on my
brother's PowerMac.  The MOST disappointing thing, however, is that it cuts
in and out when I play it on my Bose
stereo system.  Whoever mastered the CD/EXTRA material on it really screwed
the pooch.

Sorry you are having problems, glad I'm not the only one though,

I can't compare with the MF gold discs, mainly because I don't have
them, but I personally like the sound on Fossil Fuel.... especially
comparing the soft version of "Science Friction" from the White Music
disc and the louder, more, well, def, version from FF... My only
complaint is that Virgin actually went over the booklet and did a
little thing I like to call "proofreading".... every page must of had
at least 20 errors, be they spelling mistakes, just plain lyrical
mistakes, verses in the wrong order, lines OMITTED (check out "No
Thugs in Our House")... the way they really couldn't settle on a
capitalisation scheme... Feh.  They might have just gone and had a
list of all the albums or something...  a la Explode Together

Though I mentioned this in my last post:  NO!!!!! Please let this be

BTW, I've found someone who hates XTC, tolerates the Dukes and loves
Explode Together.  I'm thinking of getting him Go 2 and Drums and
Wires to see if he likes the sources as much as the dubs.... BTW, I'd
still like to see a scan of the cover of Take Away/TLOS (and possibly
the back cover).... one of the reasons I bought Explode Together is
that I thought they might just include the covers, as compilation
albums of previous releases are apt to do... i.e. Then: The Earlier
Years....  But I didn't even get lyrics!!  Feh on that too.

Ah well, that's this world over...

Subject: The XTC Atlanta Bash

Folxtc,

The Atlanta Bash In Honor Of XTC was a blast.

In attendance were our gracious host Pete, Doug, Kim, Connie, (my lady),
Andy, Willie, Jason "Buffy" and his band (Orange Hat), Surrey, and of
course, your humble narrator.

High points of the party in no particular order:

Various intoxicants (legal and quasi-legal) were consumed in moderate
amounts.
XTC music was listened to and discussed, including "The AP demos" and
"The Jules Verne Sketchbook".
The XTC video collection "Look Look" was viewed and discussed, as was
the 1989 MTV performance.
I mentioned that Connie and I discovered upon our first meeting that we
were both John Lennon and XTC fans, and that this most certainly
contributed to our union.  Willie decreed that this was a fine basis for
a relationship, and we agreed.
Kim played a "Ben Folds Five" CD, and it seemed that most of us liked
it, and couldn't understand the flap about them from a few issues back.
(I plan to buy some BFF.  I quite liked them actually).
I played "Seven Worthies-", and it was well received.
We telephoned JDSMX in Arizona, who was simultaneously celebrating his
birthday.  We sang "Happy Birthday", and played "This Is POP"
concurrently, in two different time zones.
Our most excellent host cooked hamburgers on the outdoor grill, and we
all ate heartily.

The high point of the day had to have been the live music as provided by
"Orange Hat".  They opened the set with a few of their well crafted left
of center psychedelic pop songs.  Then came the XTC songs.  Jason
stepped out from behind the drums, picked up Christo's guitar and
Christo picked up the drum sticks.  What came out was an authentic full
band arrangement of "Blue Beret", with Jason pronouncing "Beret" as "Baa
Ray" a la AP, and even struggling to hit the high notes!   Then the
organ player, (sorry, never caught his name) picked up the guitar,
Christo got behind the keys, Jason went back to the drums, and they
banged out a rocking, letter perfect version of "Peter Pumpkin Head"
that would have made our friends in XTC proud.  Next came a credible
reading of "The Mayor of Simpleton", followed by a snappy rendition of
"Helicopter".  Lastly, they played one of the "Jules Verne Sketchbook"
demos.

This band rocks.  Having played in various bands over the years, I can
tell you, XTC is not an easy band to cover, and they handled them like
pro's., with a minimum of rehearsal time.

"Orange Hat" has all of the necessary ingredients to become a successful
band:  Playing ability, unique sound, catchy original songs,  good
vocals, (all for members can sing lead and harmony) and a great sense of
humor.  They easily kept us amused and entertained, and XTC fans are a
discriminating lot.  I hope they can overcome the obstacles that surely
await any band trying to get by in the music business, and I hope they
get the breaks, because they are an excellent band.

This party helped to confirm what I have believed all along:  The
average XTC fan is intelligent, artistic, articulate, friendly and has a
strong penchant for partying and having a good time.

I seem to remember Cherry Red distributing Morgan Fisher's Miniatures

XTC at V2? (XTC ANYwhere...) Now, that's news we can use - if it's true.

Dan Marmer - I'll be in Chicago 7/21 - 7/29 (or somethin' close); would
love to hear the hammered dulcimer dude, if I can find him!

Pete, I don't think anybody in the London Symphony is too worried about

XTC universe is a little different from the rest of ours...

Absolute favorite XTC tunes (bridge and all):
	"Respectable Street" (started a MIDI of this once - hmmmm...)
	"Burning With Optimism's Flames" (do have one started for this)
	"Sgt. Rock (Is Going To Help Me)" (and has...)
	"Senses Working Overtime" (the only XTC video I've ever seen... sad)
	"No Thugs In Our House" (this one absolutely kicks it for me)
	"Snowman" (to me, the quintessential XTC tune)
	"That's Really Super, Supergirl" (I just love XTC's metaphors)
	"Garden Of Earthly Delights" (how to write a piece of music)
	"Mayor Of Simpleton" (I feel like this, sometimes, though I have no
	 problems with music, computers, or astronomy)
	"Poor Skeleton Steps Out" (Danny E. would nod approval...)
	"War Dance" (clarinet, sweet clarinet, moan it to me...also makes
	 me think of the 'This Old House' theme - well, I don't rent...)
Commentary always welcome.

Sorry, Karl... I didn't get it. Maybe a trip to the video store is in
order?
