I guess this just happens. 1) SMILE is a puzzle that you have to put together. I did; it was the most intense rush I've experienced making a tape. Any non-believers want to send me a goddamn 100 minute tape, I'll save you the time and effort. 2) The Beach Boys do not play a note on Pet Sounds or SMILE. No, they weren't a good band, but shut up already. It doesn't matter if Brian was "saddled with a band that wasn't really up to converting his brilliant ideas into the kind of final recordings they deserved", because Phil Spector's musicians play on Pet Sounds and other musicians played on SMILE. 3) Those two records have nothing in common with surf music or surf anything. 4) vacuous and bubble gum? Okay, so you haven't heard SMILE. Why are you jabbering then? 5) You can't digress like that. Mike Love's a twit, but you are as well for even mentioning that fact (which seems more like the first post, which started all this SMILE talk, rather than something you'd add now). Oh Mike Love's a twit. Thank you for straightening that out. End of discussion. I don't know. You can paint any picture of yourself you want.

Leigh Gorman was the Bass Player for Bow Wow Wow and though they may have been considered a teenybop group by some, the talent of the 3 musicians that made up that group can't be denied. Unfortunately, Matthew Ashman (a way cool guitar player) is dead now and who knows where the drummer is, but if you listen to their records strictly for the music made by this three-pointed neucleus, you can't be dissappointed. Of course Mick Karn has always been on my, "best list," and I even got to see the late Charles Mingus once in Ann Arbor, MI (1978ish). When I first aquired Oranges and Lemons, The Loving didn't really jump out at me like lots of the other songs. It wasn't until I woke up one morning with it running through my head that I realized what a masterpiece it is. Now, more often than not, it's the first song I play off the CD. L8r, SMX J. D. Subject: Andy Partridge Interview!
Chalkhillians,
Yesterday the local Madison weekly "The Onion" published a great
interview by Keith Phipps of Andy Partridge. A.P. discusses XTC's
impending record deal, his views on "Upsy Daisy", his enlarged prostate,
his temporary bout with deafness (has this been discussed on our list?),
his favorite XTC songs, his views on the future of XTC----all sorts of
things. There is a picture of the group, with Dave Gregory sporting what
appears to be a goatee---I'm not sure if this is current or not---he looks
like Butch Vig! The great part about this is that The Onion has published
the interview in full on the net, so everyone go to "www.theonion.com" to
read it. Click on the highlighted "XTC Interview" in the column to the
left of the home-page screen.

For those interested, I just ran across a beauty of a compilation CD. It's
called "Ambition--The History Of Cherry Red Records Volumes 1 & 2". 47
songs, 2CD's, and a whole cargo full of bands from early to late 1980's.
Some of the bands on this gem are:
Felt ("Primitive Painters"), Ben Watt with Robert Wyatt, Marine Girls,
Tracey Thorn, Everything But The Girl, Eyeless In Gaza, Matt Johnson, The
Runaways, Dead Kennedy's, Andy Partridge, The Monochrome Set, Quentin Crisp
and many others.
A bargain at a mere $20.00! The catalog number on this is CD BRED 140.
I bought it not only for the vast amount of music, but for the first time I
will have "Primitive Painters" on CD. For those not knowing about this
song, Liz does the backing vocals.
Hope this helps anyone searching for this great song, but cannot find
anything on CD by Felt.
Enjoy and have a good night.

Steve from Tokyo will be Steve in Melbourne for two glorious weeks from the
27th of June. Yep, I'm heading home for a break. And since I'm meeting at
least one other Chalkie while I'm there, how about having a meeting we can
all get too. I'd love some Vic Bitter.
So those in Melbourne who are interested in getting together one night

I just figured that the boys must be making SOME money off it, so I'd help out and contribute, as well as showing record companies that people do care about them. And I'm listening to it now...sounds great, nice selection of songs of course, but what did you expect? Anyway, I actually really do like the packaging, despite some misgivings from a few of you on the wisdom of putting a cute lamb on the cover of the album. As it turns out, in an interview with Andy at The Onion (www.theonion.com), it was his idea to do it, envisioning it as an assortment of chocolates with the sort of tacky design some chocolate boxes are known for. In fact, it's a pretty attractive cover design (nice fonts!) -- a cute little itsy-bitsy lamb is frolicking in a flowery field, leaping into the air with what might just be a small daisy in its mouth, a bee flying nearby, while in the distance we see a quaint rural town on the edge of a lake with mountains in the distance and a steamboat on the water. The back cover is the same, minus the lamb, with the song listing in its place. In the upper-right corner on the front, a photo-realistic ribbon is tied in a bow, overlapping onto the back upper-right corner, gift-wrapping the "assortment." In the clear plastic left edge of the CD case, where a matchstick could be found on "Fossil Fuel," there's a long-stemmed daisy. Inside, we find that the CD itself is decorated with chocolates, continuing the metaphor, and inside the booklet (it's only a 2-page spread inside, no extra pages) there's a wallpaper-like design on the left and the covers of all albums from "D&W" onward on the right, with the songs on "Upsy Daisy" that come from each listed below their covers. On the back of the booklet is a recent photo of Andy, Colin, and Dave (sporting a beard-type thing that makes him look a bit like a slimmed-down version of Lemmy from Motorhead). Andy's holding a guitar, and Dave has his strapped on, with the cord running right to the viewer, looking like it was plugged into the camera taking the photo. All in all, it looks pretty nice. As with "Fossil Fuel," it would have been really nice if there had been SOME sort of liner notes about the band and the purpose of this CD. There must be some notable person who'd be happy to have said a few good things about them. Well, that's it for the description...just thought that those of you who haven't seen it yet or who may have trouble finding it might be interested. Assortedly yours, Dave Gershman

Hello Fellow Chalkhillians...
Just got back from the Matthew Sweet concert in
Fort Lauderdale, Florida and I have some news that
will be of interest to all fellow Chalkhill
readers. First off...the concert was pretty good.
I like Matthew Sweet but I think I would like to
like him more. What I mean by that is that with
his albums, there are 4 or 5 tracks that are real
great "POP" songs with "Sweet" harmonies (No Pun
Intended!) but the rest of the songs are fillers.
With more quality control he could probably
produce a classic "POP" album from start to
finish... but whatever...he still writes pretty
good stuff. Anyhow...the reason that I'm posting
this is I was hanging out talking to Matthew and
his backing band afterwards. Really cool guys! Now
the keyboardist and drummer are from another band.
That band is Velvet Crush. They have recorded with
many other bands. They have also recorded with
Stephen "Tin-Tin" Duffy. (They reason why I'm
speaking in short sentences is that it builds for
dramatic effect!) Now Stephen's new album,
forthcoming shortly, was recording mostly with
Velvet Crush as a backing band, Stephen Street
(Smiths and Blur producer, excellent colourful
producer in his own right) producing most of the
tracks and our own........Andy Partridge producing
the rest, which I think amounted to 3 tracks. Not
only that but he also contributed guitar, keyboard
and vocal work. All of this came from Velvet
Crush's drummer, Ric Menck, who by the way, is a
virtual "POP" encyclopedia. He described Andy as
being cool and laid back but extremely quirky at
the same time. He said that as far as producing
the material Andy had an excellent "POP" ear and
was able to really wind people up in the studio to
get their best performances. It's funny how this
all ties together because Ric Menck has very close
connections with Blur and played drums on the
single that Alex, (Blur bass player) Stephen
Duffy, and he worked on together. And as we all
know Andy worked on the aborted album tracks for
Blur's "Modern Life is Rubbish".
So there you have it...
Talk to you later...

I know they're on different labels, but I don't get the reasoning behind their release. Most XTC fans I know are not casual fans: they own at least the whole released catalogue. I myself bought the entire catalogue twice, in different formats before moving on to JVS, BGG and other various live selections and home demos, and I refuse to buy these same songs again for sonic differences my ears probably cannot hear. Was the purpose more than just offering Greatest Hits to unknowing would-be fans? Or was it to assess what kind of interest is out there for new XTC material? Because if it were the latter, and it didn't sell well, that would not be good for those of us who have waited patiently for a new release for so long. What thinkest thou? 2) Again I implore any kind souls to help me obtain any Home Demos after Skylarking. That's where my collection leaves off. I have a list of items for trade that I would love to share with any interested individuals. Yours seeking XTC, Georgie

Dear Chalks,
Recently seen in London, the following. Follow these up yourself,
don't ask me, I don't have time (sorry):
Virgin Megastore - corner of Oxford St. & Tottenham Court Road:
XTC - Fossil Fuel (ltd. edition version with embossed cover)
Thought this was worth noting; I'm surprised this version is
still in stock there. Only one copy though.
Music & Video Exchange - Notting Hill Gate (this is not one of
the two shops down the side street whose name escapes me, nor
is it the bargain shop on NHG, nor is it the classical music
one, but the one inbetween those two. From the tube station,
turn right out of the ticket gates, then up the right hand
side steps (past the toilets). Walk along for about a minute
- it's opposite the Midland bank).
Sighted 21.6.97:
Under 'Rock & Pop XYZ' - loads of stuff, mainly albums but
including the '5 Senses' EP if anyones interested, for #2.50.
Also a German(?) copy of Drums & Wires on LP, Virgin 200 917-320.
Under 'Indie Various' - a copy of '1967 Through The Looking
Glass' (that's the one with Colin's Hermits on it).
Hopefully useful to someone. I hate to advertise these crappy
shops, but still...
If this message wasn't interesting or relevant to you, please
don't read it. :-)

Dunno if Andy and co. were looking there as a potential future home, but if so, they can cross it off their list. Another reliable source (AHEM) said Mercury was at one time interested. Might not be a bad idea; a few years back no one would spit on them, but it appears that within the past year or so, they've been signing 'name' acts left and right (INXS, the Ocean Blue, Morrissey) and etting newer groups in the spotlight (the Cardigans, Hanson) All the labels I think would be a good match for them - Bar/None, Restless, Slash etc. probably can't afford them, esp. if XTC go forward with their double album. BTW, being the prolific writer Andy is, he would appreciate Mark Eitzel's workload. Eitzel, as many of the indie-informed here at Chalkhills knows, was once the lead singer of the brilliant American Music Club. Anyhow, check this out: in addition to his new Warner Bros. release ^West^, a collaboarative effort with some Peter Buck guy who's in some other band, Eitzel will have a another solo out on Matador (cheekily titled ^I'm Caught in a Trap I'm Can Back Out Because I Love You Too Much Baby^) this fall. If that's not enough, he scored a soundtrack to a small indie film called ^No Easy Way^. And that doesn't count the LP he did with former AMC member Bruce Kapahn called ^I Lost My Humor^ which is currently in limbo. Oh yeah, and he and Bruce did some helping out on the new Cool For August LP. (Er, obXTC reference: on Mark's Warner Bros. solo debut, last year's 60 Watt Silver Lining, features horn work by one Mark Isham, who of course did the "heavenly honking" on ^Oranges and Lemons.^) Anywho, that's about it for me. Thanks again for letting me bore you senseless AGAIN. Adam Ostermann currently listening to: Failure/Fantastic Planet (Slash)

I haven't seen that for years. Another tragedy of having my collection stolen. I remember a vacation in northern Michigan with a bunch of friends and everyone doing a tribal type dance to that record. I think Pigbag was the rage back then too. I think there was a fifteen year or so gap between that and his previous solo recording. For those who don't know Roky, he was the leader of the 60s Texas psychedelic band 13th Floor Elevators. I really enjoyed "All That May Do My Rhyme" and would recommend it. I didn't know he was back in action. Last I heard he was in jail for mail fraud. Apparently some twisted fan sent him a package of suspicious nature which he made the mistake of accepting. The man's an insane genius, roughly what you'd get if you crossed Syd Barrett with John Fogerty in Texas. I didn't know about the recent album; the last one I know of was in '88 or '89. The one I have is from 86 or 87(Don't Slander Me; one of his better ones). There's also a very good tribute album from a few years back, featuring ZZ Top, REM, T-Bone Burnett, Thin White Rope, The Butthole Surfers(of course!), and many others. One of the few tribute albums that actually works! I also have a very scratchy old cassette of a live album by his old band the Thirteenth Floor Elevators. Makes his solo stuff seem tame by comparison. Christopher R. Coolidge Eleventh Hour Cauldron Publications

greetings fellow Chalkhillians...
Well, 2 days ago we finally got to have the chalkhills gathering in
Atlanta, it was as much fun as I was expecting and probably a little
more fun than that! I was battling the flu on that day, so I felt
just a LITTLE bit under the weather, therefore, I can't quite
remember EVERYONE'S name that was there (ah yeah the beer and
all the medicine I had taken probably didn't help much either), but
everyone was really nice and seemed to get along quite well for
basically a bunch of strangers. It was a total XTC-overload for all 5
senses, well, sight and hearing in particular, considering we got to
listen to all sorts of rare tracks, demos, and my particular favorite,
we got to watch the "LOOK LOOK" video twice!! Thanks to my wonderful
friend Doug I now can watch these 10 times a day if I want (thanks
again Doug!). Ah, and of course, the HIGHLIGHT of the evening, the
WONDERFUL band ORANGE HAT played a few of their original psychedelic
pop songs and a few excellent covers of some XTC songs ("mayor...,"
"peter pumpkin...," "blue beret," and "helicopter"--this was
GREAT!!!). sorry if I forgot one, gotta excuse me....those guys were
just a lot of fun to watch (I was trying to keep my jaw from gaping
most of the time, but that's ANOTHER story! [i's such a stoopit gurl
sometimes...])
All in all, it was a blast. I hope we can do it again real soon!
