Brendan O'Brien is the perfect producer (in the mainstream phonebook) for our beloved Swindonians precisely because of his rock pedigree. Our boys have had a soft attack of late and I think (IMHO) that their most arresting work was realized when they had a rock sound (this is not to denigrate Chalkhills and Children or Pale And Precious or even Wrapped In Grey which is one of the best Burt Bacharach songs that Burt didn't write) I don't know where this grunge tag comes from, I can only guess you are narrowcasting Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, sure I'll give you that one. The media put any rock band from Seattle into this one handle and now we have to live with it. I don;t even like Pearl Jam (I already own Led Zeppelin III) and Soundgarden's singer sounds like Ian Gillan from Deep Purple, but you have to listen to the way Mr O'Brien captures a performance. Give our boys a good crackin drummer, cut as many bed tracks live, and go to town with cool analog sonics and you got yourself, wait for it, a SIXTIES RECORD not grunge whatever the hell that is. Kurt Cobain died years ago, it was on TV. LONG LIVE XTC and whoever they have behind the boards let's just get a good one okay. P.S. Steven Drake of Vancouver band, the Odds, would be a good choice for mixing engineer. He did a few bands here in Canada as well as the Odds who you should really check out. PPS Tom Lord Alge is also supposed to be no slouch in the sonic tinkerings.

Ok. Let's sum up this thread so far, shall we?
I think everyone on this list has put in their 2 cents (or pence, or yen,
or whatever) about who should be the next XTC producer.
Next thing you know, someone's going to nominate me, and I don't think I
could handle working with Andy. (That, and I've pitifully little record
producing experience.)
Maybe Lee Beddow (thanx for Fossil Fuels details, kind sir!) could contact
his contact and ask who XTC is working with in preperation for their
impending album of new songs...it's only fair.
Or get me a phone number and I'll call from work! Hell, they won't care.

Which, by the way, is an EXCELLENT album. I urge ALL Chalkhillians to
check out Sam Phillips. She has 3 albums to her credit (with a 3rd, "Omnipop"
due in August) and they are all three wonderful. She is one of the finest
songwriters out there.

I'm sorry you feel that way. But I actually quite enjoy bits and
pieces from _Take Away / The Lure of Salvage_ and _GO+_, especially
"Commerciality", "Shore Leave Ornithology (Another 1950)" -- which IMHO
is an excellent title for a song -- "Cairo", and "The Rotary". Perhaps
part of the fun is trying to figure out where the pieces all came from,
but like it in any case.

Stiff Beach and Pink Warmth were both pre-XTC bands. Pink Warmth was
one of Dave Gregory's early bands, and in an interview broadcast on
KFJC-FM 89.7 Foothill College, Los Altos Hills, California, The Wave of
The West, Andy recalled having seen Pink Warmth when he was young. The
following excerpt is from the first part of a recording history of XTC
found in the November 1990 issue of the U.K. magazine _Record
Collector_, by Gary Ramon:
The band's roots date back to the mid-60s when Dave
began taking an interest in playing guitar. Around 1967,
he formed a school band which, by the end of the decade,
had acquired the name The Pink Warmth (inspired by a
petrol ad on TV!). This psychadelic group performed
irregularly at various youth clubs in Swindon, one of
which providing the meeting-place between Dave and
15-year-old Andy Partridge, who'd just taken up the
guitar. Over the next few years, the pair met up at
various guitar shops, where they auditioned new models and
traded the leading rock riffs of the day; but it wasn't
until 1979 that they actually teamed up in the same band.

"Sterno" or "canned heat".

Barry Andrews fans take note: _Thrang Thrang Gozinbulx -- Official
Bootleg Live In 1980_ by The League of Gentlemen, recorded in Toronto,
has just been released, and reportedly is quite excellent. Prominently
featuring more "steam powered" keyboard work by Mr. Andrews.

As for a new producer, it seems to me the obvious person is John Leckie. The guys know him, have worked with him and he has a good credibility rating with the music buying public. Here's how Andy himself put it: "We went around and asked them for a sleeve" says Andy Partridge, "and they came up with the usual stuff - lots of chrome taps and women getting out of cars in the middle of nowhere. We turned them all down and they came up with this..." He holds up a copy of _Go 2_. Or in the words of Mr Amazing Terry Chambers: "Fuckin' terrible, it was" shouts TC, "they've got some six year old child does most of the artwork around there". Seriously. So if you got a few thousand bucks to spare, invest them in a top Hifi set (spend 1/2 on the speakers) and experience pure aural ecstasy. I would be the happiest man on earth if Mofi would remaster ES. The UK CD is ok but not as clear and vivid as the vinyl version. Re. Fossil Fuel: I agree that a rerelease of Nigel or even better, Senses on single coninciding with the Fossil Fuel release could get our boys a surprise hit and some hard-earned cash. They are slowly getting more and more respect. And many people are surprised they still exist. Well, I personally love Suzanne's "99.9 F" album...I think it's her best.
And have you heard what he and Tchad Blake have done on the last couple of
Los Lobos albums ("Kiko" and "Colossal Head")? I would tend to give Los
Lobos a lot of the credit for the excellent songs, but both albums just
SOUND wonderful...so many cool, experimental sounds. It's definite "ear
candy," as they say (though I don't want that to make it sound like they're
"bubblegum" music, obviously).

Congratulations, Peter! That's the album I had in mind, although I don't
know either whether they appear together on any songs. I suspect they do, as
I believe Colin plays bass throughout the album, so they've got to meet up
somewhere! As for your prize, would a hardy slap on the back and a handshake
be sufficient?

Subject: Odds & Ends Greetings fellow Chalkheads! It is a bummer that the compilation apparently won't have anything new on it but it will have it's uses (meaning I'm probably not the only one that's compiled a pretty similar package for my own use). A friend of mine (hi Mark) that reads our musings over my shoulder thought it would be the perfect gift for those in need of conversion to the Swindon Sound. It looks to be a pretty comprehensive overview of the band's evolution. Of course I'll probably buy it anyway just to clear out some slots in my CD changer... J. Hall volunteered to set up a lyric interpretation centre. Perhaps dear Mister Relph might inform him of what kind of volume he'd be in for ;-) Re the producer thread (ho hum), it came to mind that perhaps what we should be discussing is the ENGINEER. Ultimately the song's will come through in all their brilliance but I'm more concerned about the over-all sound. Any ideas? BTW it was Hipgnosis that designed the cover art for Go-2, which is sometimes my favorite (when it insn't ES, BS, D&W, Mummer....) I must admit that I too have been known to skip the odd track. Both bands resolutely do things their own way and aren't afraid to experiment with their sound. Their most recent album(I forget the title; somebody left the CD at the club I used to run, and when it closed I took it home and listened to it out of curiosity)has some surprisingly understated and rhythmic stuff on it. Neil Peart seems to have outgrown his Ayn Rand fixation and tendency to overplay, and much of the album actually has some stylistic similarity to some of The Big Express. Even Geddy Lee sings normally for the most part. On the other hand, Rush still tours and releases a new album regularly every year or two. There's also an XTC/Rush connection in the person of Aimee Mann, who sings backup on Rush's "Time Stands Still" and has shared a tour(and presumably a bed)with Dave Gregory much more recently.

This is the XTC digest. We are all fortunate to have a common bond that, in my opinion, is a pretty powerful and deep one. XTC is *not* an everyday band, you know. I have always felt very at home perusing the notes because I feel I can relate to what I'm reading (well, except maybe the Rush stuff ;-)) and the people who are writing it. I'll bet many of you feel the same. Point is, we're lucky to have a place like this, a forum that fits like a glove. We're lucky to have XTC, too. So let's be happy. Okay, enough ebulience. I just picked up the Acoustic Tales CD from a local dealer for $15US. I would have paid more. I know it's a bootleg and all, but if you have an addiction, you'll commit crimes... The first seven tracks, recorded >from the KROQ are excellent, and Blue Beret really touched me; it's one of my favorite XTC songs. Does anyone know why it was omitted from O&L? The medleys were quite enjoyable as well (Andy is hilarious missing the line on Love on a Farmboy's Wages). I wonder how many other non-album songs I'm really missing out on, and which ones? Anyone have some advice? I'd pay $100 at least for a new (ten new songs, say) album. The boys mean quite a bit to me. -Peter

Thanks to everyone who has mailed me to have their pages included in the
XTC directory. Unfortunately, I am no longer able to maintain this page -
at least for the time being. This is because I have left Oxford, and have
to telnet in from Wales to access my account.
I shall probably be able to start this site up again at the start of
October. I still have records of those who have asked to have their URLs
placed on the page, and will try to do this ASAP in October.
In the meantime, apologies to all those who have seen no response to
their requests. I shall still be reading Chalkhills at irregular
intervals throughout the summer: mail or post if anyone has any suggestions.

(if westcountry ears could take it!).Read,read,read-unless you suffer from 80's nostalgia and end up reminiscing about 'the good old days'.
