Someone's working with Michael Penn?!?!?! Good Gawd! It's about
time that boy puts out another CD, hmmmmmm???

To whomever asked about XTC's sales records, yeah, I'd be interested
too. US vs. UK, also.

Robyn Hitchcock fans, thanks. I got several responses, both within
Chalkhills and privately, regarding some good stuff to check out.
I'll try to check out some of his stuff soon. Maybe I can return
the favor - on Elvis Costello? Squeeze? Smithereens? The Osmonds?
Marky Mark? :~)

Thanks for all the info Lee. A couple of quick thoughts... No Dukes or
similar offshoots, which seems like a shame as there's going to be a lot
of spare CD left over. But more to the point: What is Wrapped In Grey
doing on there? OK, it was going to be a single, and they even made some,
but it was hardly released properly? Well, maybe a reissue is in order? :)

Seriously, I suspect a reissue of something like 'Nigel' or 'Sgt.Rock', or
maybe in these post-Crash-Test-Dummies days 'Peter Pumpkinhead', would
more or less guarantee a big hit and help shift loads of the compilations.
Since when the OMD best of came out Virgin reissued a couple of their early
singles, complete with original B sides, on CD (3"!), you never know...

Hideho!

I was interested to find that there is no XTC "interpretation
archive". Some other bands have a page where people can submit their
interpretations of different songs, allowing all the fans to see what others
think the songs are about. However, I haven't seen such a page for XTC.
Therefore, I would like to volunteer to maintain the XTC Interpretations
Archive (XTCIA). Anyone who e-mails me a copy of their song interpretations
(with "XTCIA" in the subject line) will have their opinions permanently
interred in the Archive for all to read. If this is a stupid idea, I rest
assured that y'all will inform me post-haste. :)

OK, I ADORE Eno and Roxy Music, but Bryan Ferry's solo output just seems to
get worse and worse. As far as I can tell, "Slave To Love" is the only
decent melody he's written since Roxy broke up. The rest is just vaporous,
vamping grooves with no direction whatsoever. So please don't blame this on
Eno -- it's just weak songwriting. Boys And Girls and Bete Noire have the
exact same problem, and Bete Noire is even worse than Mamouna, if you ask
me. Buy These Foolish Things and Let's Stick Together...the other Ferry
albums are really pretty marginal. :(

Now, as enormous an Eno fan as I am (he means more to me than XTC even,
sorry), I don't think he's the right producer for XTC. As others have
stated, I think someone with more gutsy, non-glossy approach would be an
excellent choice. And please...no Mitchell Froom! Blecch. Let him ruin more
Suzanne Vega albums, but just keep him away from Andy!

I was disappointed that a couple of folks responded to my Blur/XTC comment,
but didn't comment about Wire's "I Am The Fly" vs. "Boys & Girls." Is "Fly"
that obscure a song? Oh well.

What does O'Brien know about good ol' sixties powerpop? Does his experience

Yeah, I agree - maybe Brian Wilson. I mean, folks, there's a lot of talk
about the Beatles influence in XTC's work but what about Mr Wilson? The
Smile-like vocal backing on Rook, the God Only Knows-sleighbells on Wrapped
in Grey, The Dukes' fab Pale & Precious and of course Chalkhills & Children
wouldn't be out-of-place on Pet Sounds. So, what do you guys think? I mean,
Andy and Brian would have something in common ...

I see that David Byrne flame war is back. Yay!

By the way, I believe the "Go2" cover art was designed by Hipgnosis, the
people who designed the Pink Floyd albums "Dark Side of the Moon," "Wish

XTC boys didn't come up with the idea.

Eno is god, but maybe he shouldn't produce any longer. Look what he did

Hello and Greetings!

Here is some good news - If you want a Christmas present, either an LP or
a CD, featuring the Alter Egos of The Three Wisemen, a remastering of
Oranges and Lemons is tentatively scheduled for December. If its only
tentative, I say deluge them with requests at mofi@mofi.com and maybe it
will become official??!!

Since O&L is probably the brightest (as in ear bleeding) (IMO) sounding CD in
the XTC catalog this could allow for many hours of exulting the skills of the
songsmiths without suffering severe aural trauma, and uncover a wealth of
new, previously obscured details in some favorite songs.

Mobile Fidelity did a good job with Skylarking. Let's hope they can be
convinced to proceed with O&L.

As far as sound goes, no releases, Gold, Japanese, CD, MD or anything else
has come close to the double LP English Settlement, English Import. The CD
versions I have are worthless except for convenience, and if this is your
favorite XTC album, you haven't heard it unless you've heard this version.
On a mediocre turntable, it will sound superior, on a superior turntable -
you'll know why this version is the best. If MoFi can approach this standard
for O&L (they didn't with Skylarking), we would really have something special.
Not really MoFi's fault, they can only work with what's there.

Maybe they could release it on the original Skylarking release date as a
tenth anniversary tribute to that album.

"All of a Sudden You find the Cupboards bare" - of new XTC releases.

Ah, someone got to make this comment before I did, The last several digests

Shame he doesn't play drums, 'cause that way we could have our Monkee
producing and drumming, and finally kill the three threads that need to die.

Now that I've gotten that off my chest: I was in a record store the other
night trying to find the new Sugarplastic ("Never heard of it" <Sigh>), and
I saw _Carmen Sandiego Out of This World_ for a mere $2.99. OK, so it's
not as cheap as borrowing it from the library and taping it, but not a bad

Still searching for the Sugarplastic,

I have been getting some wild stuff! Pretty much the full spectrum of

tackling some of the toughest material to interpret).

  I'm really enjoying this!

  I have a few questions...

I came to the realization (way too late) that we should probably not
include "covers" of any of XTCs unreleased demos... as much as all of us
want to hear the demos, it's a matter of ethics and respect (respect we
  have, ethics... I don't know).

There were people who planned to do songs that I have never heard. I
don't know if they're from EP B-sides, "Jules V." or "Bull, et al" but I
need to know their source and/or their original release date.

I plan to put all the songs on the tribute tape in the order that they
  were commercially released.

  The songs in questions are:

  Disque Bleu
  Your Gold Dress
  I'm Bugged
  Everything

Hi Chalkhillsters,

First, a question for all. I was going through a bunch of my old
college stuff yesterday and found two items that I'd forgotten about.
I have the singles of Love on a Farmboy's Wages packaged in the little
wallet as well as Sgt. Rock with the cartoons all over the sleeve.
They are in excellent condition and I would be curious to know their
value. Anyone with info please post to me privately.

Second, I don't like the trend I've seen on the list toward harrassing
others into discontinuing threads, eg. the monkey thing, the six
degrees of separation thing. Who cares if you (or I) don't care for a
particular topic. If people are having a good time engaging in brain
teasers involving xtc, I say have at it. I can skip over them if I'm not
interested. I've been doing that with the producer thread for about
eight issues. I'm bored to death with people's suggestions for
producers and yet I don't jump all over the list saying that others
shouldn't play that game anymore. Let free speech reign on the
internet (and in this digest) and let the threads that don't interest
you run their natural course. They all die eventually. (tearfully) Can't
we all just get along?

Merely,
amanion

Skylarking: Often "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul"
Oranges And Lemons: "President Kill"
Rag&Bone Buffet: Hoo-boy. "Extrovert," "Respectable Street" (just 'cause the
Black Sea version is the only *Real* version...:), "Strange Tales," "Officer
Blue," "Cockpit Dance Mixture"
Nonsvch: "The Smartest Monkeys"

So, that's about 15 songs I skip (some only occasionally) out of 292 (all
the songs on the above albums *only*.) Or, 6 2/3% of all the XTC songs on
those albums. I'd say that's a pretty good percentage (especially
considering that one of those CDs is a B-side collection, and contains the
two songs that the band freely admits are the two worst they ever recorded. :)

Hi all,

Do you ever go hunting through your CD collection looking for that
XTC album that you haven't listened to in a very long time...then realize
there's just no such thing. You realize that you've listened to all
of them so many times, just waiting for that next one to come
around... That's about how I feel right now... I went searching on
WWW for some good news about the band - didn't find all that much,
but I did find your list.

So, just thought I'd send a little intro message to other XTCers out there
 on the net!

Daniel Johnson
(btw, I settled on Black Sea in my CD search - and am now enjoying
"No Language in our Lungs")

Subject: Yay for Yazbek!

I'm just posting to thank David Yazbek for his response to
my inquiry about the Testimonial Dinner tracks that never
happened. It's really cool to be able to ask a question about
an album you like and then get a response from the producer.
I'm new to this Internet thing, so the novelty of it all hasn't
worn off yet.

Is Somesuch the second disc on Fossil Fuel?

Okay... well, half of you seem to say "yay" to Eno, the other half "Nay".
So... how about someone with definite Eno influences, but also his own
distinctive sound that (IMO) would complement xtc's sound? I refer to one
Mr Daniel Lanois... check out his work with everyone from the Neville
Brothers through U2 to Bob Dylan, plus his own two excellent albums,
"Acadie" and "For the Beauty of Wynona".

Yeah, right. He did a great job on "The man who sailed around his
soul" (my all time favourite song by XTC!). Why search for anyone
else? ...Mattacks would do fine as well!

But I'm afraid no one will listen to us little XTC-list people
(*SNIF*)...well, let's trust in the band's ability to decide.

Subject: More producers

Okay, Chalkhillites, here are yet a few
more suggestions that I don't think
anyone has brought up yet:

Don Dixon (co-mastermind with Mitch
Easter on the first couple REM albums,
as well as other fine albums, including
his wife, Marti Jones, and his own)

Daniel Lanois (some fine work with
Peter Gabriel, U2, and others -- in
fact, Brett Milano of the Boston
Phoenix said this about him: "...he may
have a niche as the producer who pulls
experimental works out of vital
veterans." Sounds like it might be a
good mixin' match?)

Steve Albini (great at getting good,
raw sounds out of bands...might make
for a more elemental XTC album)

Just thought I'd run them by y'all.

Save me a seat at the Easter Theater,

Dave Gershman

Subject: what in the world is Carmen Sandiego

I may have missed this, I have been with the list for about 6 months but I
don't remember seeing it. What is this Carmen Sandiego thing? With all the
talk about people stumbling across it, I started checking out the children's
sections at my local CD haunts. After flipping through tons of Raffi,
Barney, and Mickey, I actually found a Carmen Sandiego CD. It has a bunch
of stuff by a group called Rockappela and a few by some other "groups" I
know nothing about, but nothing by our boys.

Is there more than one? Are they listed as XTC? How many tracks do they
have on it (and what are the titles)? What is the catalog no. of this
particular release?

Can someone email me with some of this info?

BTW Mr. Yazbeck, distribution of your CD is improving. It has made it to
Best Buy here in South Carolina.

If Marianne was Andy's contraction she was bound by a ring and therefore
holds the hoop as the domineering female in "Me and the Wind".

Okay, I'll stop,

Subject: Out Of The Shadows

After almost a month of lurking in dark corners, observing the comings and
goings in the Land of the Chalk Hills, I have been forced out into the light
by the appearance of my name (at the top no less!) in Phil Corless's t-shirt
list. Incidentally, thanks again Phil for your time and assistance in that
particular area. So I now feel obliged to contribute my thoughts on some of
the topics under discussion (definitely NO simian references!).

*PERSONAL* 38 year old Scotsman, who works for the Inland Revenue ::: short
pause to allow booing & hissing to subside :::. I have been an XTC fan since
way back in the days of the - 3DEP- , and own every Album/Single etc released
in the UK (or thought I did, see *FOSSIL FUEL*), and am currently updating
earlier album releases with their CD equivalent.

*DEMOS* There are frequent references on this list to various demo tapes.
As others have asked, how do you get hold of these? There seems to be a
closed circle who swap tapes among themselves to the exclusion of us mere
mortals. How do you get started?
The Elite must at one time have also been in the position of being demo-less.
Thoughts please.

*PRODUCER* An obscure suggestion for producer of the next album - Nick
Heyward. His most recent album - Tangled - was self produced, and is a far
cry from his pop days as leader of Haircut100. Even if you don't fancy him as
a producer, give the album a listen as it is really good and contains a
couple of songs that I could imagine the boys doing.

*FOSSIL FUEL* Major respect is due to Lee Beddow for the work he is doing
in our name on this subject. However, his recent track-listing for the album
gave me quite a shock. When was - Wrapped In Grey - released as a single????
I long ago gave up reading the weekly music press, but still read most of the
monthly titles. Also, rarely a week goes by without me scouring the local
record shops for new and interesting releases. Has this one passed me by
completely? If so, what were the other tracks on the CD single, and can
anyone provide the catalogue number? All help greatfully received.

*IMPORTS* As with the single above, I was totally unaware of - A
Testimonial Dinner -
until I joined Chalkhills. After a round trip of 100 miles, I finally tracked
down a copy in HMV, Princes Street, Edinburgh. #19 well spent. I have seen
references to an album - Without The Beatles - what is the XTC connection
here, and also with the Carmen Sandiego thing?

Well that's enough aimless rambling for now. Please feel free to e-mail me on
any of the above matters, or anything else.

Cheerio the noo'
