Gangbusters!

You should all buy Jordan Zevon's album, "Insides Out," right now.
Like, don't delay. It's kind of like if Jellyfish and Owsley moved to
Massachusetts and got married and had a child, that child would be
Jordan Zevon and he would make this album.

re:...my recent "discovery" of the
mexican band, cafe tacuba, has drawn me once again out of my shell...

I have to agree completely with you about Cafe Tacuba. They are a
really great band, very versatile and seemingly capable of working in
nearly every genre of music. My favorite of their records is probably
Re, but I really like their latest, Sino, as well. Re veers giddily
between traditional Mexican folk tunes and speed metal (and makes many
stops between), Sino has a Who-inspired classic rock sound.

If you haven't you should definately check them out.

Bi-annual Michael DeBernardi is right! Cafe Tacuba is some very nice
stuff!!

It makes me want to learn Spanish (well, that and living in Texas,
working in a "warehouse" job, and recently having sold my near-perfect
Sequential Circuits Pro-One to Ulises of the Mexican band "Kinky" -
check out their cover of 'Mexican Radio' on MySpace!)

Thanks for bringing up that band, Michael. Fun stuff!

You can find them on MicePace: http://www.myspace.com/cafetacvba

...or the world wider web at: cafetacuba.com.mx

Cheers,
Richard

Over at Amazon, one of those sad, sad people who has nothing better to
do than compose essays for the amusement of total strangers on the
Internet has asked: What music would you like played at your funeral?

It took me some time to read through the thread, because of all the
songs I had to play when I saw them mentioned, including Paul
McCartney's "The End Of The End," and especially Emmylou Harris' cover
of Lucinda Williams' "Sweet Old World, which would have to played at
the funeral of a suicide but, with anguished lines like "Didn't you
think you were worth anything?" and "Didn't you think anyone loved
you?," could not be.

In case you're wondering, yes, the then-terminally ill Warren Zevon's
poignant "Keep Me In Your Heart" did get mentioned.

Which XTC songs should be on the list? No, please, not "The Last
Balloon," "Jumping In Gomorrah," "Dear God/Dying," "Heaven Is Paved
With Broken Glass," or "Travels In Nihilon."

Perhaps "In Loving Memory Of A Name," "Greenman," and "Complicated
Game" would work. Or you could go for sheer beauty, regardless of
theme, and play "Summer's Cauldron/Grass."

The whole exercise was mostly lighthearted and tongue-in-cheek, but I
hope those who created playlists for their own funerals let those who
are likely to be their survivors know of their preferences, even to
the point of including a CD-R or memory stick in the envelope with the
will and instructions.

For me? I was saving this to be the theme of my Marconi Award-winning
radio talk show, but it looks as if my funeral's going to come sooner
than that will. From Michael Rutherford's first solo album,
*Smallcreep's Day*: "Out Into The Daylight," especially the triumphant
guitar solo -- by stodgy old Ruthers himself; who knew the
mild-mannered bassist behind Ant and Steve owned such chops? -- that
begins exactly at 1:00. It could easily be followed by the next track,
"At The End Of The Day."

I've tracked down 248 of my all-time favorite songs, with fewer than a
dozen to find. (Seven by XTC, two by Andy, one by the Dukes, and 238
by other people.) If I had them all played back-to-back at my funeral,
it would take 17 hours. But if I rented out the entire hamlet of
Jerome, Arizona, U.S.A. (a copper boom town, then nearly abandoned,
and today an arts colony), flew all of you in by private jet (via the
Sedona airport), and gave you wristbands that entitled you to
unlimited food and drink in any of the town's handful of restaurants
and bars, would you lend me your ears, and cheer when you hear "Poor
Skeleton Steps Out"? Yes, it's one of the 248.

Aiie!

Well, I know some folks around here were frustrated when I posted the
link to the post where someone said XTC would be getting back together
without having managed to get through to the verification.

Yes, It wasn't true.

And perhaps I am today paying the price in my frustration at having
repeatedly tried to download the 1980 XTC concert touted here on
Chalkhills.

Here's hoping it's legal and still available somewhere....

Throw a guy a line, will you?

Hi folks,

Like many of you, I was quite chuffed to see this torrent mentioned as
I've had a crappy VHS copy for some time and it's quite played out.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a limited membership for this site
and I can't get logged in.

Will any of you fine folks be posting it anywhere else, like, erm,
MININOVA? I'd really love a copy...

Best,

d2

Hiya All

It's Debie here in Swindon! Some of you might have noticed that
Dave's www.guitargonauts.com dropped off the radar a few weeks back!
But fear not - myself along with two new trusty webmasters have been
working away behind the scenes to get it back up and running. You'll
now find the usual site at www.guitargonauts.info (note the slight
change).

So sincere apologies - it was all beyond our control I'm afraid. However,
do watch out for a 'refreshed' Guitargonauts coming very soon. Dave has
even rattled off a nice, new shiny photo for the Welcome page!

So from me, Mr DG himself, and the fab new webmasters Mr Jefferson Ogata and
Mr Daniel Prendiville, it's ta ta for now - catch you soon! I'll let you
all know when the refreshed site is 'open'.

Cheers all

Debie

I think we can do better. Given Our Todd's abilities as both a perceptive
listener of music, and a tight, powerful drummer who knows how to use drums
to both support and punctuate the melody and harmonics of a song, then I'd
like to hear him play on the track.

In other news, people into the whole Beatles / Jellyfish / ELO / Queen /
Rundgren power pop deal might enjoy this recent purchase of mine, presented
here in hideous Myspace-Tinny-Compressophonic Sound (TM):

'Captain Frobisher' is obviously on a ship in the same fleet as Admiral
Halsey. If the phrase 'More of Paul's Granny Shit' excites you, check out
'Jesus Wants My Soul Back', which would have set Lennon's teeth on edge.

Sure, it's doing nothing groundbreaking, but it sure is a lot of fun.
