As Universal Studios and Universal Music are no longer part of the same family (Studios is owned by GE, Music by Vivendi) I assume any of UMusic's masters had long since been removed from Universal Studios' property. Also, I assume the originals are still in the U.K. It does make you wonder, though. I hope the Beatles' masters, for example, are in very secure climate-controlled fireproof storage, and not simply sitting on shelves at Abbey Road!

So, I've got a new record player, and am struck by the weird irony that all the albums I could have bought cheaper on vinyl at the time, but paid almost double the price for to get on CD, are now going to cost me more than the price of the current CD to buy again on vinyl. Anyway, i was digging through my vinyl singles and found 'Sunburn' by Graham Gouldman. I have no memory of buying it, (and since I would have been seven at the time I doubt that I did), but since I didn't recognise the name I thought I'd give it a listen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSIvsn-eS3U (BTW, can anyone identify the upper keyboard for me?) It basically sounds like 'Armed Forces'-era Costello with all the bitterness and bile removed. It's not a great song by any stretch of the imagination, but it seemed dumb fun - hooky and obviously 'summer' enough that it made me wonder why the guy never had a follow up hit - unless the Tim Curry Franknfurter hair scared off the teeny set. You can't get the snarky booklets, the stamps, the big box with the rocket art, or the *Hinges* disc at eMusic, but if you're not a completist and the music of discs nos. 1-8 will suffice you, this might be the way to go -- especially if you want the option of cherry-in-your-tree-picking only the best songs (e.g., "Ship Trapped In The Ice") and avoiding Andy's masturbatory audio excesses. (I bought the box, and I paid full freight at Ape instead of scoring a bargain at Amazon, so I'm entitled to say that.) Make sure to download "Song For Wes Long." Andy needs to know we appreciate him dedicating music to Chalkhillians and that the rest of us want songs, too. Granted, Relph is next in line, then come Sherwood, DiGregorio, Coolidge, Dunks, Versaci, and the rest of our heavy hitters, so you and I will have to wait until sometime in the 22nd century, but let's at least get the ball rolling.
