Aaaiieeee! Noooo! Good god...has it not become entirely clear over the
years that Jeff Lynne is the one of the most intrusive producers in the
business? That he takes everything he lays his hands on and tries to
make it sound like an ELO record? The only reason Tom Petty's records
survived his meddling is thanks to the fact that the material was strong
enough to shine through, but they're still among Tom's most dated
sounding records. And the Traveling Wilburys ended up sounding just the
same.

Please, let's keep him far, far away from XTC...they need someone who
can bring out a more clean, acoustic, even raw sound -- say, T Bone
Burnett, for instance -- not polish it to a high sheen. I like some of
ELO's stuff as much of the next person, but I just can't take Lynne as a
producer.

I can't agree with you more.  It's heartening to know a fellow XTC
lover also loves Jeff Lynne.  He's a sadly overlooked genius, as is
Mr. Partridge and Barry Andrews.  I salute you with every fibre of my
being.

Dunno about youse guys in da UK, but on this side of the pond, we were not
allowed to forget, because they played every damn one of their 63 hits once
every nine seconds on the radio throughout the Carter, Reagan, and Bush
administrations, and they still do in some backwoods limited-DNA-variation
areas, including satellite radio.  Then of course, assorted others (Tom
Petty, fer one) keep that screamin' sow-und (Ike Willis reference) alive by
hiring him to produce their next record.

Since there are many Beatles fans among the fans of XTC thought I'd pass
along that 1976's "All This and World War II" has been released by Hip-O
Select. I received my copy and while there are a few bum tracks the 2 disc
set has some terrific and unusual covers of Beatles tunes. The artists are
primarily those that were popular from the mid-70's and while I'm not a fan
of alot of them they do very good jobs on most of the tunes. This album was
originally the soundtrack to a film from the same year. Jeff Lynne and Roy
Wood both do interesting covers (Lynne combines "With a Little Help from My
Friends" with "Nowhere Man" while Wood does "Polythene Pam" and "Lovely
Rita"). Peter Gabriel's version of "Strawberry Fields Forever" is rather
interesting as well.

There's also a bluesy rendition of "Get Back" by Rod Stewart (who sounds
like he's accompanied by the rest of the Faces on the track although I can't
be sure since there's no credits for the individual tracks).

The songs feature orchestration as the main accompaniment tastefully but
imaginatively arranged by Will Malone (none of Phil Spector's over-the-top
type of arrangements). The least impressive stuff was the stuff that the
Beatles had applied George Martin's arranging expertise to himself.

Since Andy and Dave covered "Strawberry Fields Forever" as part of Dave's
remolds for Fuzzy Warbles I thought it interesting to compare the two.

Difford & Tilbrook's self titled album is also available and received that
as well. It's a solid album marred only by some production/arranging touches
that date it as being from 1984.

Kind of XTC tied, as these guys have worked with Partridge recently. The
Nines have new songs released on their own TAS label and are streaming 4 new
unreleased ones on myspace. They have a wonderful disc called "Calling
Distance Stations" out (Andy wrote a song on it) but these new tunes are
mostly rare unreleased songs that were not included on the new disc.

How is the number niiiine bonus CD in the Warbles set?  Is it
worthwhile?

Hey, I got "Orpheus", cheap, off eBay.  I kinda like it.  It's kinda
weird music and ambience but I love the artwork and the strange
"negative" picture that Steve Somerset took.  SS told me some
interesting things about that encounter.  And Haydn Bendall recording
the drums in Abbey Road?  Andy must by now feel right at home
there-

Anyhoober. a few things to reply to since I just red 8 hills in one sitting.

Tweed and Ivory..
Darryl Darryl Darryl you forgot the cassettes as JJ so rightly pointed
out shame shame. But Kevin and Wayne seriously you need remasters of B
sides? And you think Virgin thinks they can make $ off of that. The
fan in me says 'yes please', the business man says 'uh-huh, ain't
gonna happen'.

Warbles - OK time to let fly some pooperatimi. I have for a long long
long time, had all of the material that Andy submitted to Virgin for
the proposed Coat of Many Cupboards set. Virgin used what they could
and let Andy have the rest back to use for Warbles. There are only ten
discs submitted to Virgin and so far very very very little that has
been on Warbles has not been on one of the originals so please do not
feel badly that we are only getting 9 Warbles instead of the bandied
about 12. Cos the cupboard is bare! Ooo bad pun! The empty warble bin
sounds delicious! Some of what I consider to be the better stuff has
not been released yet so.... lick your chops. Kind of like going to
the prom with your sister for me but thats what you get for reading
the last chapter first. <shrug> And no copies are NOT available, don't
bother asking.

Here is a thought,  'how about some new XTC music?' Andy, Colin? Knock
Knock? Sigh....

And lastly I can't see the Sherwood forest for the trees where r ya? I
read 8 freaking Chalkers without any nuggets of incredible dry and
intelligent humour in them. Little chum for the snarky sharks there eh
mi chacho!
