In Chalkhills Digest, Volume 12, Number 9,

Adrian Ransome wrote about the Partridge/Hitchcock collaboration, and
wondered about the origins of "Turn Me On Deadman".

It harks back to 1969, and the 'Paul Is Dead' rumours which were
circulating. According to one US DJ, if you play the White Album cut
'Revolution 9' backwards, you can hear John repeasting the phrase 'turn me
on, dead man' over and over.

Nonsense, of course, but that's where the inspiration came from.

Apropos of nothing, and no particular XTC reference-

But, to me, the best song of the last, say, ten years, has to be "You
Get What You Give" by New Radicals. Despite the fact that it was
butchered to form a Mitsubushi car commercial, this song talks
DIRECTLY to me.  Think Todd Rundgren with a dash of Ben Folds.
Multiply that by ten and if you don't come out weeping at the end,
then YOU DON'T FEEL.  Some dancey troupe have even appropriated it
recently.  Even Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick said it was the best
song ever.

Some kudos for its creator, Gregg Alexander, who, strangely, promptly
retired after recording it.  Go figure.  That's his trip, but he's
left us with this magnificent song anyway.

You can find it along with some drug-dusted excursions on the album
"Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too".

I just tried to do something amazingly foolish -
and listen to "Coat of Many Cupboards" while I'm at work, trying to do
work at the same time.

Today's culprit: "Fly On The Wall", which I confess that I haven't heard
in years - I don't know how many - too many. And I've not yet had a chance
to hear this entire compliation, and I'm not going to have the time to
give it a really good, close listen for MONTHS. If I wasn't at work right
now I'd just start crying.

Yes, obviously, I need an iPod, or at least a combo CD-player/tape
recorder so that I can slap all this stuff onto cassette (because I do
still have a perfectly operational Sony Walkman, and I don't have the
money for an iPod, even a cheap one). I would very happily descend back
into the land of almost exclusive XTC listening, because other music so
quickly becomes dull and irrelevant in comparison. And there's plenty
enough material that I'd never get burned out on any one thing.

How is it that I can combine whining and worship into a single post?
