hey all ...
i agree with mr. culnane here in an earlier digest posting re: him
wanting some new material from the swindon lads. why the hell
doesn't andy (especially) stop concentrating so damned much on
rehashing stuff that's at least 6 years old, but go ahead instead
and put out an album's worth of new material? we all know, as
their longtime fans, that colin and andy both have it in them to
easily pull it off, so why not, guys? come on already! how many
friggin' copies of AV1&2 do we need? how many copies of the
demos for AV1&2? and why am i constantly hearing the same
accompanying XTC lyric in my head over and over again re:
this issue? ("... selling you stuff that you really do not need!")
ENOUGH ALREADY!!! give the fans a NEW ALBUM!!!!!!
i swear, as much as i LOVE this band, i do believe they're simply
getting lazy now and starting to rest on their laurels, as it were.
and i'm sorry, guys, but that's simply not good enough for me.
especially considering that these guys are so fucking TALENTED!
so ........
show some of that TALENT with an album of NEW material for
the fans!

I dont even care that you disagree. The point I made and what you have missed, was a personal observation, not a direct comparison between the lyrical prowess of the two songwriters. Also, your post suggests you have no idea of musical history. To dismiss Paul McCartney as a has-been pop star is ridiculous. You may or may not like him or his music. Thats fine. Youre allowed to like or not like whatever or whoever you want. McCartney, however, will go down as one of the greatest musicians in history. Your opinion on that (and mine as well for that matter) is irrelevant. People will judge Paul on his extraordinary talent and career, not your whiny and disparaging opinion of him. In two hundred years time his work will still be listened to. In two hundred years time the likes and opinions of one Mark Fisher will of course continue to be largely unknown and totally irrelevant (as will mine). That is historical perspective. Something you seem to lack. No doubt Beethoven had his detractors, many of whom would have made the same boorish, offhand comment as you. Centuries later, he rightly assumes an important place in history. Who remembers any sneering, snide and sniffy sniper? As for not being able to talk about guns in this digest, again you fail to see the true issue. The Administrator decided to put an end to the Melt the Guns thread as in his opinion it had gotten out of hand and needed to be reined in. If they remain unchecked, threads like that one can end up having a negative and damaging impact on a messageboard, as was pointed out by the Administrator. I, like you no doubt, look forward to participating in the discussion of new XTC material, should that long overdue new album ever eventuate. Gray Packham.

Hi everyone!
Just thought I would send out a brief synopsis of the
events that took place last weekend in Swindon.
Several hardcode fans meet there to party and celebrate
our love for the music of XTC. I'm not sure of the exact number
who attended, but I think it was in the 80 -100 people range.
So it was a pretty good turnout!
I had a blast!!!!!
Friday night - we watched Martin Newell play some songs,
many from his "Greatest Living Englishman" CD. Then it was
an XTC cover band, who played mostly the "demo" songs of
Andy and Colin.
Saturday daytime - the main Gathering, where we broke up into various
sized groups to participate in a Quiz (it started easy but the
questions got more difficult as it went on)(my team came in 4th
place), then an auction of XTC memorabilia (I had the winning bid on a
red plaid waistcoat that had been owned by Andy and then given to
Martin Newell) and then finally we watched some very rare video and
live concert footage of early XTC.
Saturday night - the fantastic XTC cover band X-sTatiC played an
almost 3-hour set. They were wonderful! And one of the highlights
was their encore when Lee Moulding (Colin's son) came out and played
drums on 3 songs (My Love Explodes, No Thugs In Our House and his
father's big hit - Making Plans For Nigel). He then made a very brief
speech saying how his father was very humbled by all the fans
gathering in Swindon - and that his father thought we were all mad!
(Someone yelled back "We are!") This evening was the highlight of the
weekend.
Sunday - a bus was hired to bring us all to the Uffington Horse. Lots
of fun and several group pictures. Then it was off to a local pub,
where various fans got up and did various songs - some originals, some
XTC covers and some covers of other artists (including someone doing a
wonderful cover of Elvis Costello's "American Without Tears").
I can't say enough about what a great time I had. This Gathering
(surprisingly) was even better then the two North American ones I
attended years ago in Barrie, Ontario and Princeton, Illinois.
There's already talk of another one in Swindon in 2 years time (2007).
If it comes to fruition I strongly suggest all Chalkhllians make plans
to be there next time. It's not something to miss!

I have just had an article published in THE ROAD magazine, which is the magazine of the Motorcycle Action Group, a pressure group for motorcyclists in UK. It's a fun and beautifully produced A4 magazine with all sorts of articles from those about safety and how the law is trying to always stop us having fun, to articles on bikes and gear and meetings and members' news and more bikes.... and this issue out now has an article I wrote about my two month trip biking across New Zealand over Dec 1999 to Jan 2000. I appear in a photo wearing my black XTC Wasp Star tshirt... and I mention that when I had to have a filling replaced along the trip, the dentist asked me to pick my music and I chose "English Roundabout". Spot the mistake... oh well, never mind. Anyway, I am so proud of this article I just had to tell you all. So now I have. Belinda
