Having been an XTC fan since 1977 and listened to music from ABBA To Zappa for 40 odd years I'm startled by various contributors on the Chalkhills Site. Do they honestly think that all tracks written over a couple of years make it onto an album? Whose to say the Partridge/Cullum tracks won't see the light of day at a latter date and since when did Cullum come from Stoke-on-Trent? Cullum like XTC is a Wiltshire lad from Hullavington (Between Swindon and Bath). Having seen XTC live, played guitar with Andy Partridge and seen Cullum mature as an artist over the last couple of years I think it's time someone put up a defence of the "Jazz Dwarf" As far as I can see Cullum is making his way in an industry where no one of his like has gone before. In the UK there is no precedent for a Jazz/pop artist selling huge amounts of CDs and appealing to a crossover audience. Also I would assume that Andy Partridge must have thought Cullum had at least some musical talent to agree to work with him in the first place! At the end of the day Music is broad rich tapestry and it takes allsorts to make a world. While I agree that that XTC are a superb band, let's give the other Wiltshire lad a break, listen to Cullum's latest album, listen to some of his earlier stuff especially his stuff recorded before he a had a multi-national record deal and you never know you might like it?

Andy would have come up with something much better. We're all waiting for him to do just that, but he's been doing something else, apparently. Meanwhile, we're buying other CDs too. P.Mc. is 62 now, and his much of his idea of good music is affected by that. I like a lot of Macca's new record, even if some bits aren't as good as XTC. Sorry you don't. > Why are we allowed to talk about a has-been pop star and not guns? You can talk about guns here, but people will likely start getting upset. I'll probably be one of them. There's another list somewhere for people that want to talk about guns, I'm sure. If you bring up XTC there, how do you suppose they'll respond? You can talk about has-been pop stars here too. In terms of pop stardom, XTC are way past their shelf date. They have never been much more than marginally popular, and they haven't even been sort-of popular for a long time. On the other hand, the music they make, when they get around to it, is still first-rate. I love 'em. "Love Kraft" is simply mindblowing, and I can't recommend it to Chalksters enough> I can't agree more, although I'd actually say that "Love Kraft" is actually inferior to "Radiator" and "Phantom Power" but SFA are the best (active) band in Britain by a long stretch. Anyone with ears should listen to their music. They don't sound like XTC but they do share a love of melody. There aren't any bad SFA albums, and they are my favourite band after XTC. Start with "Songbook" for an introduction and then wonder how you survived for so long without this band in your life.

Crumbs, that cow's udder is under some considerable stress. To whit: One of my friends opined that, like him, in my view, XTC can do no wrong. Yeah, but up to a point. He and I discussed this. Hang on, gimme a break. This new Apple Box sounds and looks real fine, and in my servitude to the best band ever, I'll buy it (completist, me). But wait. New artwork and liner notes are all very fine, yet, we had AV1 and AV2, then the demo versions, then the karaoke discs. All very lovely. Now this new box set. What's goin' aahn??? The two "new" tracks will only be available if you buy the box. You get a PIN to download these new things. Fuck, what's that? Why couldn't they put the new songs onto a simple CD EP for all to enjoy? And if there is new musical activity with Colin and Andy, then please get on with it, and stop trying to bleed your fans dry with past glories. Come on! My devotion to XTC has rendered me a pauper. But, funnily enough, I still submit. What do other people think? PAUL

Don't f**k with me anymore, you bastards. Thank you Dunks for your kind words and thoughts. Beautiful man (I mean, it was beautiful, but so are you). Here's a bit of doggerel I wrote in response: Yeah, you get recognition You get rejection You get a punch in your head But you can get ignition And foolish fission Or hugs and kisses instead And if I were now to go to bed Me and my teddy would safely Lay each of our heads Because Chalkies are the talkies And whoever you are, thanks for being my friend And it is not "the end" NP: tribute to Thelonious Monk. (like how do you get a moniker like that, let alone the fab musical legacy he left? Get outta here!!!) Peace PAUL

And over the fence came this nifty carry-bag. It just blew in outta nowhere. Very spooky! The bag is green and silver, and it carries the Uffington Horse (in Chalk-white) as a motif. Needless to say, I just went "faaaark!" My boss Brian, witnessing my bewilderment, said: "that's yours, this moment was made for you". I mean, Jesus H. How does this kinda stuff happen? PAULLY
