The first is an article about Andy's toy soldier hobby http://chalkhills.org/articles/Tracks0502.html that appeared in the most recent edition of Tracks magazine. The other is a review of FW 5-6 which sums them up pretty well from a fans point of view. http://www.fufkin.com Which brings me to my point which is that Andy and in a small way XTC still manage to stay in the radar of pop culture albeit ever so low on the horizon with the Fuzzys and the other side projects. Despite the fact that sadly there is not any XTC music since Wasp Star in 2000. Obviously we are all here still and there is an another crossover group of fans on the Idea chat site who continually fan the flames of fandom in their own way. http://www.xtcidearecords.co.uk/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi Some of them are Chalkhills defectors who have found more life in the Idea format. I know because I had a chance to meet a bunch at one of their gatherings last summer in Chicago and they had people come from all over the Midwest to celebrate their friendships and more importantly their favorite band. But for some reason many did not get Chalkhills and greatly preferred their way of doing things. Maybe some of their lurkers can explain? David Lake or Omnibus? They are also hosting a gathering in Swindon the weekend of September 30th this year. I am hoping to get the time and the money to drop in on them. If anybody else from Chalkhills would like to join me it be great. The old Chalkhills Family meets the young Idea family it might prove to be a lot of fun and quite interesting. Not to mention a rocking good party! I can see it now a bus full of Ale drinking disciples driving past Andy, Colin and Dave's homes with there cameras clicking away... http://www.mourra.com/XTC/2005/themeetingplace.html Anyway, happy new year to all of you who let me lurk around your computer rooms whenever a Chalkhills comes through the ether. The guy buried in fish parts? Was there any art direction from the band? Where did the title 'Look Look' come from? Ian D.

I know this because I was sad enough to have been looking at macintouch.com, where I found one of the other fungus-encrusted obsessives (c Harrison Sherwood) bitching about the fact that his download of Generals & Majors had a glitch at 1.13. (Apple have fixed it, apparently.) There's plenty to moan about with the whole iTunes thang (since when did 99c equal 79p - and how much of that finds its way back to Swindon?) but who wouldn't want Science Friction, Battery Brides or Statue of Liberty for less than the price of half a pint of beer? Download the show for free on Audible.com sometime Tuesday afternoon, or check www.HarryShearer.com Nice tribute to one "fake band" from the member of several others. (Besides doing many of the voices on The Simpsons, Harry is Derek Smalls of Spinal Tap, plus was in A Mighty Wind as one of the faux Kingston Trio whose name I've spaced.) Le Show is always an hour well spent each week, so if you haven't yet, check it out! Just wanted to report the "sighting" -- back to lurking. Cheers, G

Slowly but surely, the time they have spent out of the studio *without* needing to be on strike is approaching the time they spent out of the studio while on strike. This worries me. But I know I am not alone. In #1, our fearless leader wrote: >But this morning as I made my way to the cafe for my morning caffe latte, what to my wondering ears did appear? The Three Wise Men singing "Thanks For Christmas"! The world is not such a bad place sometimes. John, perhaps this is a geographical thing, since you apparently did not hear "Thanks for Christmas" very much when you were still living in S.F., but whenever I am on the East Coast near Christmas (which is often), I always hear "TfC" multitudinous times. I've heard the song in malls, grocery stores, women's clothing stores, men's clothing stores, bookstores, and restaurants. In fact, I was beginning to wonder if a] XTC get(s) any royalties from these things, and b] if this song is not, as I have opined to friends several times, now the XTC song with the most airplay of any song in their catalog. It is constantly present on store Christmas p.a.s around this time of year, and yes, as Tiny Tim said... >God bless us, every one! ...oops, I meant as Tyler said,... >Hopefully, it won't get associated in people's minds with bad pop Xmas songs. I agree wholeheartedly with Tyler, although you have to admit, it is better than at least 90% of that Christmas crap out there. On a related note, though, what I do find funny is Pugwash's version of the song with their (in this case) unfortunate Irish mispronunciation of the T H. The result is "Tanks for Christmas", which sort of changes the sentiment of the song... Bomb, umm, oops, *Bonne* Annee! Jeff * * * * * PS - For a wonderful article on the horrors of Christmas music on the radio and on store p.a.'s, try this link: http://www.tomatonation.com/xmassongs.shtml. The author nails it on the head, especially the part about my personal "fave" Mariah's 95,000 16th notes! Hilarious!

In reading a review of Marianne Faithfull's new album, due out 25 January in the U.S.A., I stumbled upon a description of the last track, which was co-written by none other than Jon Brion! "The disc closes with "City of Quartz," written with Brion. It's a fractured, slightly off-kilter waltz that could have easily appeared on Blazing Away or even as an outtake from 20th Century Blues. The notion of time's passage is in the present tense here, as strings enter amid the chimes underscoring longing, and the acceptance of human need." (Thom Jurek, AMG) Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh! I'm psyched! (The XTC connection, for those who are wondering, is that a Jon Brion-produced XTC album would be SOLID FREAKIN' GOLD.) Also, please check out Tori Amos's new single, available on iTunes. It hearkens back to her "Little Earthquake" days: it's poppy, bright, and sing-alongable.
