I'm not sure what was more surprising--seeing the boys on VH1 classic,
or seeing an XTC video other than "Dear God". But on their "We Are
The 80's" hour earlier this week VH1 classic played "Senses Working
Overtime". Man, it sounded great.

>From Ben Gott:

For anyone who couldn't grab Rhino Handmade's reissues of Sill's
first two (and only two) albums, they are available on iTunes. I
knew nothing about her until I read Andy's thoughts on her music.
(You too can read about the albums -- and Andy's reaction to them --
by going here: http://chalkhills.org/articles/Uncut0504.html.)

Ben,

At least one of her albums has been reissued as a release in Europe with no
bonus tracks (I have the Rhino version so can't comment on the sound quality
of the other releases). Also, her third unfinished album has been finally
released and, unlike most unfinished albums, 8 of the tracks sound pretty
complete and they are augment by a couple of demos and then a second disc of
demos.

"Dreams Come True" is available at amazon.com among many other stores and
it's a fine collection of songs that come very close to equaling her best
material.

Andy recently talked about lyrics in the Guardian.
Sample quote (about Coldplay): "They're the musical
equivalent of that corporate art you get in Holiday
Inn foyers. A lot of orange stripes, over a bit of
turquoise."

Hi:

John "Mando God" Relph wrote about, and recommended, Veda Hille in the
last issue, and I have to chime in to agree with him. I've heard the
new album, and it's *really* good. IMO, it's the best thing to come
out on APE that Andy hasn't been directly involved in.

She's got a beautiful voice that reminds me at times of Terri Roche,
Natalie Merchant, or Liz Phair, and the orchestration and arrangement
of the songs is quite unique -- very atmospheric and compelling. Her
lyrics are also quite good and thought-provoking.

I'm not quite sure when it'll be available on the APE site, but when
it is, I urge you to pick up a copy. You'll be glad you did.

Folxtc,

<off topic>

Anyone who knows me either personally or through my writing on
the 'net knows that for me, everything starts with The Beatles. I
don't have patience for musicians who don't "get" them, especially
the ones that give all the credit to George Martin. I'll go as far
as to say that he was a great producer and deserves much credit for
their success and innovations.

However.

The Beatles could have been The Beatles with a different
producer, but George Martin couldn't have taken The Dave Clarke
Five, Gerry and The Pacemakers, Billy J Kramer and The Dakotas, The
Animals or any of their British Invasion contemporaries and turn
them into The Beatles.

I love Ringo, and I think his style was excellent. He had a unique
feel and his personality added much to the overall package of The
Beatles.

Have said that though, starting around "Rubber Soul," I hear timing
issues concerning both tempo and being on the beat. Missing the
beat coming out of a fill. Not being on top of things during
transitions. It doesn't affect my love or appreciation of their
records, but I hear it. I've often heard that starting around 1967,
Paul would sometimes sneak into the studio and replay the drums on
certain songs. Everyone knew he was doing it but no one spoke of it
openly. It is a known fact that Paul played the drums on "Back In
The U.S.S.R," and "The Ballad of John and Yoko" and both of those
songs are locked in way that some other songs of the same era are
not.

I mentioned these opinions to a very talented multi-instrumentalist
friend of mine, and he said, "Ringo was GREAT! I don't hear that!"

I wonder what you all think?

<on topic>

I watched the classic albums documentary about "Goodbye Yellow Brick
Road" and Gud Dudgeon said (paraphrased) that ..."Dee Murray was
probably the most underrated bassist in the business. I can't think
of a better bass player that I've ever worked with..."

Granted, Dee was an excellent bassist, and it is said that he took ill
and died in the early 90's.

Still...

IS THERE ANYONE RECEIVING ME ? Oh for the power of the web !!!!!,have
just rediscovered possibly the first quirky pop band in history,I had almost
forgotten the ability this band had to make my feet tap (neon shuffle) and
my brain spin (mayor of simpleton) and now my kids are joining me due to a
love of "the 12345 song" (SWO).Personally thought they had lost, it but that
was me in a drug fuelled crisis and now I want more can you send me datails
of any XTactivity (lost contact).
                                        Regards,
                                                    Peter Pumpkinhead!

Warning! The following link:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/06/24/DDGM1DD4N112.DTL

goes to a newspaper article that actually mentions XTC. Such unprecedence
could be startling enough to cause seizures and/or palpatations.

The article is about a fanciful question: What does Queen Elizabeth II (not
the boat) store on her iPod (which, though it sounds like something that
might jettison from a boat, is not)?

After some absurd speculations involving music about royalty, the following
paragraph (shown here in case the link does not work) says:
----
Some better downloads might include the Beatles' "Her Majesty," because,
well, she probably considers herself a pretty nice girl. Pearl Jam's version
of "Crown of Thorns" might feel good on a rainy day. There's also Stevie
Nicks' "After the Glitter Fades" for those contemplative days when the
corgis aren't enough to lift her spirits. And if Elizabeth's feeling a
little kinky? Why not XTC's "King for a Day"? A few years ago, Michael
Jackson's "Dirty Diana" would have easily topped the personal playlist.
----
Well, enough with the astonishment already. The song in question has been
played in radio stations and in stores and restaurants so much that it's
starting to creep up on "Dear God", if it hasn't actually passed it yet.
Probably has.

Until next time or space,

eriC

Hi there,
As subscribers to my Shadow Kabinet Mailing List know The Kab have a big fan
in the shape of Alan Haber who hosts a great show on WEBR in Fairfax
Virginia called Pure Pop. He has played tracks off HARK! and I also
recorded a jingle for the show.
A couple of months ago I was talking to Alan and he asked if he could get
Andy on the show. I talked to Andy and put both parties in touch. The result
has exceeded everyone's expectations and on Saturday 9th July Alan hosts a
two hour XTC Pure Pop Special with an exclusive interview Andy Partridge and
tracks from XTC and the Fuzzy Warbles albums. The show airs from 12-2pm. You
won't want to miss this!
