Frank, I may have a recording of that show if you're interested. They do a swell cover of "I can't go for that" of all things, and a few great tunes they never recorded in the studio. My fave of theirs is the Flying Suit cd, and the singles that came out that weren't on it. A fine band indeed. And a big thanks to all the DC area folks who came out in December to see the Bowlermen make a glorious hash of the Dukes legacy. We appreciate playing those songs for folks who know the words. -John I www.thejennifers.com

I'll keep my list to music only, although there were plenty of good books, movies, current events, etc. this year. Shows: 1. Brian Wilson 11/4, San Francisco Davies Symphony Hall - An absolute stunner. Emotional, powerful and very musical. 2. Prince - 9/4 Arco Arena, Sacramento. Killer show. Great band. The party of the year! 3. Absolute Zappa, Absolute Ensemble - 5/1 Mondavi Center, Davis. With a 20+ piece ensemble of all the right classical instruments for a proper Zappa performance (oboe, contrabassoon, percussion, etc.), plus a top notch rock group. They played so many great Zappa songs, including "Don't You Every Wash That Thing, Lumpy Gravy, Duke of Prunes, and Peaches in Regalia. Brilliant! 4. Pixies - 9/25, Greek Theatre, Berkeley 5. (Can you believe it? It's 57F degrees here at 8pm outside of Washington DC on 3 January. That's not right.) I decided not to go straight to the cafe, but instead went to my office and cooled down a bit, then changed into my street clothes and crossed the street to the cafe. The cafe is in one of those nasty little malls that are designed to make people excited when they visit. It has speakers all along the tops of the buildings, blaring heinous music that's almost always the lowest common denominator. Music that offends the fewest and thus offends the most. If I had a rocket launcher... But this morning as I made my way to the cafe for my morning caffe latte, what to my wondering ears did appear? The Three Wise Men singing "Thanks For Christmas"! The world is not such a bad place sometimes. Happy New Year! -- John
------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jan 2005 04:57:33 +0000 (GMT) From: Paul Culnane <paulculnane@yahoo.co.uk> Subject: 2004 CD-wise Message-ID: <20050104045733.55065.qmail@web86904.mail.ukl.yahoo.com> Hey Chalksters Among a few good sounds I encountered last year, I found there was less to really grab me than normally, and I found myself concentrating on some old faves. However, five notable discoveries for me were: 1) Brian Wilson presents SMiLE (natch), accompanied by the concert experience of the year. 2) The Wondermints (some of whom are members of BW's band), especially "The Wonderful World Of..." - although that CD wasn't a 2004 release, I've only just now got into this band's fabulous music, courtesy of Mark Kirk (thanks buddy). WWoW is a splendid album of covers; their version of The Monkees' "Porpoise Song" is stupendous. 3) Pugwash: "Earworm", an Aussie-only comp of their first two albums. Can hardly wait for their new one, replete with scores by Dave Gregory. 4) Ben Gott: "Songs 1996-2001" - a compendium of gorgeous pieces from one of the nicer guys of this parish. 5) The Shadow Kabinet: "HARK!" What can I say, superlatives escape me. This one has been virtually *glued* in my CD deck and you simply *must* seek it out! [www.shadow.kabinet.com] Oh, and the Warbles were suitably Fuzzy...
