Hello music fans.

Last week while I was pushing my sleeping daughter in her stroller down our
street I spotted something that gave me a start. I was in front of a house
that is three houses down and around the corner from ours when I was
suddenly attracted to a bumper sticker on a Honda Civic that's always parked
in the drive. There in front of my eyes was an XTC English Settlement
sticker complete with chalk horse. I have only had passing glances of the
occupants who moved in last year, and have never seen anyone driving the
car. Now everytime I walk by I look to see if someone is around so that I
can find out about who's car it is. Maybe I'll just have to go up and knock
on the door? I mentioned seeing it to my wife who replied, "Oh yeah, I
spotted that weeks ago and meant to tell you!"

	-------

My god the power of a pop song. For some reason I just seem to be feeling
in awe the last while about how wonderful pop music is (and I'm not talking
about commercial radio!) I know some people are having a hard time finding
things to listen too, but I seem to keep finding nuggets that suite my taste
just fine.

Faves from that last while include....( I've never done a year end list so
why not...)

Stars - Heart (a Canadian pop band...I personally love this...read the
review at popmatters.com)
See Venus - Hard Time for Dreamers (This is the band of Chalkhills member
Christopher Moll. The new CD was recently released on March Records)
Polyphonic Spree - Together We're Heavy (The high moments are really
high....some of it's a bit of a mess...best listened to with headphones!)
Fancey - Fancey (One of the guys from the New Pornographers - soft rock
rawks!)
Guster - Keep It Together (the best straight out accessible pop cd I heard
last year)
The Helio Sequence - Love and Distance (a poppy, blippy, psychedelic
two-piece from Portland Or.)
Wheat - Per second... (compared to their last album...this sounds bigger and
more produced but some really strong songs)
French Kicks - The Trial of the Century (to my ears they take that late 70's
sound and creates something new - not just a re-creation.)

The Decemberists, The Essex Green, Super Furry Animals, The Notwist, Iron
and Wine, P:ANO, Raising The Fawn, Belle & Sebastian, New Pornographers,
Rilo Kiley, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, Kings of Convenience, The Postal Service,
The Shins, Badly Drawn Boy, The Dears, Death Cab For Cutie, Yo La Tengo...
and too many others to list.

Fans of Teenage Fanclub type jangle pop check out the band "Basement
Apartment" on Download.com. Four good tracks of indie pop. (I have no
affiliation with the band or the website).

	-------

I bumped into this reading a review of They Might Be Giants children's cd
entitled "No!"

Next up is the enchantingly infectious "Where Do They Make Balloons?" This
song, featuring vocals from bass player and co-writer Danny Weinkauf (of
TMBG's backup Band of Dans) takes a riff from Colin Moulding's XTC classic
"The Meeting Place" and employs it to educate about geography and commerce
in a most unassuming way ("Marmalade's from Scotland / Rugs from Pakistan /
Mexico has jumping beans and cars are from Japan")

	-------

Well that's it for now...maybe next time I will have enough time to write my
treatise on how mature songwriters (like Andy) treat their creations like
babies to be nurtured and cared for while young songwriters treat their
songs like wasted sperm...knowing that they can create hundreds of new ones
by a simple and fast wanking process.

Cheers

**PopGawd Jason Falkner has covered a Joni
song ("Both Sides Now") and recently participated in a Dukes tribute
band ... does that count?

Well hell yeah - good catch Todd! And his take on BSN is a stone cold
knockout too...one of my favorites (and I have 368 to choose from).
Another Joni-XTC combo is that both of them contributed their respective
talents to the "Spirit Of The Forest" single. I can hear Joni's vocal but I
can't make out the XTC content on that track.

And good news on the new Warbles - 'scuse me whilst I go get 'em!

Hello chalkies!

Got my FW's today and I noticed that if you scan backwards on track one of
FW 5 to -51 seconds, you will get some gibberish of sorts that i think says:

have him skinned. take him outside and have the giraffe bugger him.

?? heh heh

have not listened to #6 yet other than to see if there is any hidden things
on that one.

FW5 is excellent! Stand out tracks include

I defy you gravity
broomstick rhythm
dear god (skiffle version)
don't you ever dare call me chickenhead
aqua deum
smalltown
my land is burning

Great stuff!

Chalkers All:

Ah yes, I ordered both FUZZY WARBLES, VOLS. V & VI and, after listening to
Vol. V, I have to say that I'm delighted with the results. I will play "My
Land is Burning" loud and long on the evening of Election Day, when the
mourning really begins once we know just which jokester has made it to that
four-year vacation spot first!! Wow, what a song! I am unable to read the
liner notes, so I don't know what album this initially belonged to, but it
could have been stuck on ORANGES AND LEMONS and paired nicely alongside
"President Kill". I sure hope that these lost songs as demos are not
completely forgotten and could see finished product status one day, with
"My Land is Burning" high on that list with a full band. I do listen to
the "new" material and wonder what a full band arrangement of the songs
would be like. On its own, though, Vol. V is a fantastic listen.

Also bought the new Jill Sobule disk, UNDERDOG VICTORIOUS. Is she really
being produced by Todd Rundgren on that album? I met her for an in-store
for her album, PINK PEARL, and got a very strange reaction when I brought
up liking her Rundgren-produced single, "Too Cool to Fall in Love", that
eventually showed up on a Rundgren-production comp from Rhino. It is hard
to note the Rundgren influence, though, since Jill has always sounded the
same with her own albums. Getting back to the odd reception I'd gotten
from her, maybe it was because I was apparently the oldest person getting
an album signed that day. I was really going to just slink out of the
store with my tail between my legs after sitting through a terrific
in-store performance of some of the cuts from that older album, because the
other people showing up were sooo much younger than I! I just assumed that
the fan base would be a fantastic mixture, and when could I ever have the
opportunity to see her perform like this again? But the gig wasn't even a
Tower Records appearance! I always seem to catch the artists on their off
days, so I've basically cut myself out of the loop for such things. I'll
support the albums and the concerts and enjoy the music for what it is! I
highly recommend UNDERDOG VICTORIOUS, though. Don't know if Jill and Todd
met under better terms this time, but the music says it worked and they
should keep it up!!

But what exactly was the rift between Todd and Andy Partridge? I'd heard
reference even on this list to it, but I just never understood the whole
story, and I didn't get to read that magazine article on Andy which made
note of the sessions and Andy's initial dissatisfaction with it. When I
last herd him interviewed, though, he seemed to have made his peace with
the album, SKYLARKING, and how it turned out. Perhaps he likes it a shade
more now that the lost cut, "Mermaid Smile" had been added back?

One minor dissatisfaction of my own, though. I also had a copy of the
reissue of Brian Eno's ANOTHER GREEN WORLD in its handsome digipack edition
and noted the same glaring omission that a reader of ICE Magazine made note
of, in the song, "Everything Merges With the Night". Those of you who have
it will also notice that the first singing of the name "Rosalie" had
accidentally been removed. If anyone knows the address to Astralwerks,
please, please impart this info to me, because it had been too long since
my purchase of the disk and I no longer have the receipt. Record companies
trust the megastores too much and actually believed that, if ya take the
disk back to the store, you'll get a "repaired" copy, but who's to say that
they know what shipment you are getting that second copy from?

The only time I had to go through similar hassles was when John Astley
announced in ICE or some magazine that he'd "secretly" re-released the
Who's album, A QUICK ONE, yet again, this time having found absolute
original masters on all songs. This time it was promised in full stereo!!
I ran out and bought another copy, got the thing home only to find that it
was the same old mono remix! In that instance, however, ICE had given the
name and address of someone at MCA Records (or whatever label is reissuing
the Who stuff now) handling complaints and I merely sent the copy to him
and got the "secret" reissue; the anticipation was certainly worth it, and
I'm sure a truly complete mastering of the Eno album, ANOTHER GREEN WORLD,
would be equally rewarding!! Anyone with the needed info would be welcome.
I just can't really see myself running out and buying alternate copies from
all the megastores until I find the "winner". It doesn't bode well for
this reissue campaign which I looked forward to earlier this year...and
more is supposedly coming, including all ambient titles! Sure wish Brian
himself were supervising!!

Aside from that, most purchases these past few weeks have been very
rewarding. Anyone know what happened to that expansion on Sonic Youth's
GOO album?

Questions, questions, questions...

Kevin

Hello again.

Correction on the reverse scan time on for the extra bit of dialog. It is
at -26 that you will find the giraffe buggery part. A little mix up on my
end with the "time" button. -51 is the total time of track one plus the
rewind to the dialog.
