A few years ago - okay, many, many, years ago - I did a three hour special
on Nilsson on WXYC's featured artist program. A friend loaned me his copy
of "Nilsson Sings Newman" (as in Randy Newman) which I, somewhat
surprisedly, found on CD a few years ago. I'm not sure how well-known this
record is, but if ya don't 'bout it, you're in for a treat. 'Tis a
lovely, lovely little record.

cheers.kah

Wayne is certainly welcome to his opinion--and I'm sure this album is
not for everyone--but let me just offer a contrasting opinion.

After my first listen to Orpheus, my review would have sounded like
Wayne's. I hated it. I remember asking myself "what the hell did I
just buy?!" But after a few listens I now can't get enough! What a
great piece of work. My only complaint now is that it's too damn
short; it seems to end while I'm in the middle of enjoying it.

If you buy it, give it a chance to sink in...

I have a lot of sympathy. I have twin five year old boys. Still don't get
all that much accomplished but they do love "Bumper Cars" (my 11 year old
loves "Greenman")so, for a little while anyway, we have a lot in common.

Totally off the subject of XTC--

Nilsson's "Son of Schmilsson" should be picked up in addition to his great
"Nilsson, Schmilsson" (as well as first four albums and his next to last
"Knillssonn"). Here's an example where buying the Japanese import is worth
it--the sound quality is a huge improvement on the remastered edition that
was put out in Europe on Camden/BMG a couple of years ago.

Thanks to whomever mentioned The New Pornographers. Their latest album is a
blast. Not listening to anything all that new right now but am digging back
into some classic movies---
"Picnic at Hanging Rock", "Marathon Man" and "A Shot in the Dark". Do love
the latest Pink Panther Lounge CD though.

Now XTC has some of the greatest album covers of all time (well, except for
"Explode Together" but that's another matter entirely).

These worst covers and the comments made me fall out of my chair. If there
are worse, I haven't seen them (nor would I fess up to owning them).

In defense of Orpheus, The Lowdown:

For starters, listening at a record store listening
station is hardly the best place to relax and take
this in, methinks.

For after starters, this is a great album, though
admitedly not for everyone. I love the poetry and the
weird sounds, and the way they combine. So does my
mother. So there.

In defense of children:

Sure, I've never had twins. So Gotta be careful and
start by saying to Chris "Wow, how do you do it?"

But I'm on my third baby at the moment, and I have
learned one thing in 14 years of parenthood.

Let us turn now to the eternal wisdom of Cheap Trick
and sing to ourselves:

SURRENDER !

SURRENDER!!

When my other children were babies, I often tried hard
to "get things done" that weren't work related, like
writing or recording songs, exercising, etc. I kind of
regret that now. Those other things don't seem as
important as my children.

Now, with my third baby, I give in to her completely.
I just go with it and put other things on hold or let
them go.

It's a much better way of approaching parenthood. I'll
have no regrets with this one, and they grow up fast.

3. REGARDING ENGLAND

I really enjoyed the gig with the Absolute Ensemble at the Barbican on April
1. More gigs with the ensemble are planned later in the year. Also, after
the Absolute gig, I went to Swindon for a few days and wrote six songs or
partial songs with Andy Partridge, and started working up yet another song
at Dave Gregory's place. These are baby songs in the early days of their
babyhood but they do exist. What will happen to them? I don't know. Stay
tuned.

Hi:

Wayne did complain:

> Sorry folks [Orpheus: The Lowdown] was about as much fun to listen to
as it is to watch paint dry. Actually, it was worse much much worse.
I've already got my nomination for worst album of the year.

Perhaps this album just wasn't made for me.<

It was, however, made for me. I've gotten rather fond of it - I've
always liked Andy's excursions into the avant-garde, and this one is no
exception. Blegvad's poetry is measured and evocative, his delivery is
very strong (especially in "Noun Verbs," my favorite of the pieces), and
the music ranges from subtle melodicism to jarring dissonance, with
quite a bit of humor ("Galveston" is a hoot ... I'll never approach
bowling in quite the same way again).

Wayne, listen to it again, then listen to it again. Do it with no
distractions around. It's an especially good headphones album. It
requires active listening, but IMO it's worth it.

And, while I'm plugging things, everyone get your own XTC bumperstickers
from Jamie Lowe! The "clear cling" version is especially cool, and can
be applied to any window ... anyway, anyhow, anywhere you choose.
