    Forgive me if this has been covered, but this has been bothering me.
    I remember reading in one of Pulse magazine's "Desert Island Classic"
    trivia contests a question that asked for both of the cover songs XTC
    has recorded.

    Obviously, one is Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower".

    What is the second one?  ack!

I'm sure I won't be the only one to answer this, but here goes:
Captain Beefheart's "Ella Guru".  XTC's version appears on the
album "Fast & Bulbous: A Tribute to Captain Beefheart" as well as
on the "Mayor of Simpleton" CD-single.

Also, regarding the Chills:  yes, they are good (which is to say:
I like them a lot).  Leader/songwriter Martyn Phillips shares with
Colin and Andy a flair for catchy-yet-unpredictable melodies.  Lyrically
the Chills tend to be more somber than XTC, lacking Andy's humor.
Their latest album, "Soft Bomb", and the preceding "Submarine Bells",
are both on Slash/Warner so they should be readily available.  I
recommend them both, but especially "Submarine Bells" which is approaching
Desert Island Disc status in my ears.

To answer your question about the Chills, they are excellent, wonderfully
pleasant to listen to (IMO) and I recommend any release of theirs you
can find.  Their label Flying Nun is generally quite excellent, but thats
an entirely different can of worms.

The only cover I can think of XTC doing besides Bob's is :
Pupil Haze ("Excuse me while I cane the entire front row..") and
the nonexistent Community Worker Breakdown...

        Not really a good title... since I think I can answer two questions
with two separate answers, but what the heck, right?

XTC has done two covers that I know of:
1.) All Along The Watchtower - Dylan
2.) Ella Guru - Captain Beefheart...

if they have done others, please let me know.

Also, the words to Take This Town (a most amazingly good song) are
available via anonymous FTP to cs.uwp.edu, in /pub/music/lyrics or
in /pub/music/miscellaneous/XTC (that last one might not be right, but
there should be a postscript document of all the Rag and Bone Buffet
lyircs there, including Take This Town.

Well... just to cause a small ruckus, I dont think I liked the guitar
solo stuff in Book Are Burning... too cheesy.

CD Review magazine ('93 Feb pg88)

Synopsis : The CD label, Rhino, is about release another
compilation CD. This one will be marketed towards kids. It
will be called appropriately "Kid Rock". It will feature
the Jackson 5's _ABC_, and the Cykle's _Red Rubber Ball_

Mr Steinberg then goes on to say that maybe each person
can assemble their *own* collection of songs for children:

_Istanbul, Not Constantinople_ (They Might Be Giants) : pathologically silly

I can't belive you guys missed it, but the latest issue of _Mix_ magazine has a
feature on John Leckie, where he is asked about working with XTC. He says a
bunch of stuff about how they're brilliant musicians, and a lot of fun to be
with. Duh.

By the way, does everyone agree that Andy's "Gomer goes fly fishing" outfit
(from his last store-appearance tour) is the silliest thing he's worn since the
_Mummer_ inner sleeve?

Subject: (Videos)

As far as XTC videos goes there is an import video tape availiable (quite
expensive) which contains their first 11 videos (well, 11, maybe not all
of their videos).  It has from Science Friction or something to Senses
Working Overtime.  It's a pretty cool video, it also has some short
interview bits before some of the videos.  Most of the videos are pretty
cheap (most videos back them were).  It has two names it goes by, one of
them is 'Look Look' and I have seen two different covers, but it's usually
priced about $35.00 around here.

If you've only seen the Dear God video and the MoS video once then you're
not an MTV nut.  I think the Dear God video made it onto some 120 Minutes
video compilation.  The MoS video has all three of them and a lot of
flashy looking titles.  Most of it is fake credits.   (Credited are Barry
as the car, and Terry as the fish: I think, maybe not exactly)  It's one
of their better videos in my opinion.  The KfaD video is a simple one.
All three of them sitting with instruments that they didn't actually use
on the album and a lion walking around.  I believe Dave's brother is
playing drums too.

Crimony, Relph!  Checked Chalkhills today and saw nary a mention of
the new TAPE!!

Anyone heard "The Bull with the Golden Guts" yet?   I sent a check
for two tapes via Air Mail the day after I got it in the Little
Express.

Wish I could go to Italy to see Dave Gregory jam with the Italian
siren. Oh, well.

Oh, picked up an issue of GOLDMINE lately - nothing in it of great
interest to me, but I did see an ad for the 7'' "Wait Till Your
Boat Goes Down" (French pressing). No word on condition. Also
saw several ads for 'Nonsvch' vinyl (UK) - $18 was one quote.
$24 was another quote for same. Saw a few ads for various boot
CDs as well.
