I remember reading in one of Pulse magazine's "Desert Island Classic" trivia contests a question that asked for both of the cover songs XTC has recorded. Obviously, one is Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower". What is the second one? ack!

Subject: Japanese "Demo" CD
In reply to John Davison, the disc is actually a 5-song CD. It has
"Peter Pumpkinhead", "Smartest Monkeys", "Down A Peg", "My Bird Performs" and
"Always Winter, Never Christmas". They have all appeared on "Nonsvch"
singles. The kicker about this CD is the price people want for it. The new
L.E. has an ad wanting $20 (canadian) for it. Last week I picked it up in a
Tower Records in Los Angeles for $8. Don't know if this is the trend at all
Towers but worth looking into. Package color is kind of ugly but the booklet
includes all words.
By the way, does anyone know if this "alternative album award" is a
broadcast award or one of the ones they give away the night before along with
"Best childrens' recording". Oh, and if it is, does that mean one of the a
artists might perform??????? A few years ago, Sinead O' Connor did "Mandinka"
on the show.

(A CD single of "The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead is available from this US; this CD is the same as one availabkle from the UK, except it has the LP version of "Peter Pumpkinhead.") Following are the demo tracks available on the Japanese CD: The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead My Bird Performs The Smartest Monkeys Down a Peg Always Winter, Never Christmas I guess this CD would be nice if you don't have any of the CD singles >from 'Nonsvch.' I don't have it, and don't know if it has any special artwork, photos or test that might make it desirable (the way it was desirable to get the European/Japanese early versions of 'Nonsvch' for the gold silkscreened castle cover, for example). I think it IS about the actual flower, the humble daisy that everybody
takes for granted, in every field and hedgerow, nothing special unless

He gave me the name and address of this guy, and I sent in $25 for a tepe. Here's what the tape had: XTC - Live on Rockpalast (German TV show) They did songs from "English Settlement" like Jason and the Argonauts, Senses Working Overtime, and others. This was approximately a 1-hour show. Heat Wave - promotional video (great shots of Barry doing funky keyboard runs!) Promotional videos of Beating of Hearts, Wonderland, Senses Working Overtime. Short documentary in black & white of Andy doing a sound check before a show. He's not wearing the familiar round glasses but a squarish pair, like the ones he's wearing on the back of the "Kings for a Day" bootleg CD. Documentary for French TV. Interview in English, with French subtitles. Snippet: Interviewer: I have...always thought of XTC as my heroes... Andy: Heroes? Wow, We've never thought of ourselves as heroes., etc. Later, Andy says, referring to playing live concerts: "The French are great throwers." (Adopting an accent) "Ah, you could use a CHAIR up there!" (Motions with his arms like he's throwing.) Videotape of Andy putting guitar down and walking off the stage in Paris. Band plays on for a while afterward. I haven't watched this tape in a while, but I do recall other snippets of video as well. Some of it is the same as from the "Look! Look!" video. Because it's an n-th generation copy, the quality is not so good obviously as a professionallly copied tape, but it's still kinda fun to watch. I was disappointed that it did not include the videos for "Dear God" and "Mayor of Simpleton". I saw the "Dear God" video twice, I think, and the MoS once. In the "Dear God" video, I think Andy is standing under a tree, and I seem to remember the camera moving from up in the tree to ground level. Interesting. Fron what I remember of the MoS video, it's just the three of them with a white backdrop. I think Colin's the only one with an instrument (bass guitar), and there are lots of close-ups of Andy's face. That's about the extent of my knowledge of XTC videos! I know they've done others. Just thought I'd share this with the readership here. --Wes

About the Reflex XTC flexi-
The flexi comes to subscribers only, and it only contained one XTC
song, "Rip Van Reuben." The other song on the disc was "Moving to the Sun" by
They Might Be Giants. This song was later released on the CD single of "The
Guitar."
Someone also asked earlier about the Japanese release of demos.
Well, it is on Virgin and contains demos for "The Ballad of Peter
Pumpkinhead," "The Smartest Monkeys," My Bird Performs," "Down a Peg," and
"Always Winter Never Christmas." Lyrics to all songs are given. I found it
at Tower Records in Rockville, Maryland. They are usually pretty good about
import stuff, so any Tower might be worth a try.
