An open letter to Mandy Moore:

Mandy, honey, you've done good. Screw all those record company execs
and their teen pop fluff! You've taken some hot songs and made them
hotter! Your version of "Senses Working Overtime" does not make me
want to vomit (good backing vocals there, especially the "lemon and
lime" bit), and Joan Armatrading would be proud with the way in which
you growl through "Drop the Pilot." Good Mandy. Very good Mandy. God
bless the child that's got her own!

 From your pal,
Ben

Drat.... I was hoping to go through life never having to purchase a Mandy
Moore CD. But now, based on some of those songs she's covering, I may just
have to watch for it in the discount bin.

Speaking of embarassing CDs..... Here's a question for you all:

Supposed you are hosting a Chalkhills party. Everyone on this list will be
coming to your house. Even Harrison Sherwood. Now you know that the first
thing we all will do is head straight for your CD collection to "figure you
out".... We're going to pore over your discs like anthropologists studying
some lost pygmy tribe.

The question is, which of your CDs are you going to remove from your
collection and hide under the couch simply because you are ashamed to let
fellow XTC fans know you own and enjoy these discs?

A few of mine:

Geri Halliwell - Schizophonic
Shania Twain - Up!
Jackie Gleason - Music For Lovers Only/Music To Make You Misty
O-Town - O-Town
Newsboys - Shine
Dixie Chicks - Home
Sister Act Original Movie Soundtrack
Linda Ronstadt - Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like The Wind
Robbie Williams - The Ego Has Landed
Sting - Fields of Gold
Phil Collins - Hits
Curtis Stigers - Curtis Stigers

Delurking after a long lurk ...

>From: "Bill Packard" <bpackard@tampabay.rr.com>
>Subject: the dreaded "T" word ....

>dare i ask? will the band(??) ever tour again?

Obviously not, but it made me wonder a recurring wonder ....

Surely at some time in the near future Andy and Colin could kiss and
make up with Dave, rope in a few other buddies like Prairie Prince
(maybe even, god forbid, Terry and/or Barry for a couple of numbers?),
ensconce themselves in a suitably-equipped TV studio somewhere and sit
down and record some kind of live something ... perhaps in the vein of
Steely Dan's plush TV jazz-rock party in stereo, the "Two Against
Nature" special).

I mean, would it kill Andy to do *ONE* TV gig so that we have some
visual memento of this time of their career and of what masters of the
craft they still are?

I know, Andy, that you think the records are the One Big Thing, and
live performance doesn't rate (with respect, you're not entirely
correct there IMO) ... but fer cryin' out loud, surely you must know
how far the quality of live sound has advanced since you quit
gigging. You guys would be GREAT.

And you doesn't even have to have an audience there at all if it
freaks you out that much -- but let's face it, the Dan were almost as
reclusive as XTC and even they are touring pretty regularly nowadays
-- and SLAYING them (author pauses to cross fingers that Part II of
the 2003 Dan tour will be happening while I'm Stateside).

And if you're concerned about a recurrence of your performance anxiety
-- try beta blockers! 22% of US musicians can't be wrong ;)

Come on Andy: you of all people MUST have seen that Dan video? Imagine
yourselves similarly immortalised? It would be FAN-FUCKIN-TASTIC. And
dont tell me someone out there wouldn't bankroll it -- christ,
Chaklhills will pay for ourselves by subscription if you'll agree do
it (won't we team?? ... Team???)

Couldn't you throw the faithful fans a bone and get your funky selves
down on videotape, just one more time? Please??

I think this might be one of the signs of the apocalypse:

http://www.mandymoore.com/mandyletter.html

Download the clip from the link supplied and scream in horror.

Unfortunately the sample clip of the song is only of the chorus so I have no
idea if she's covered the full song or not. (I have a scary vision of whey
clouds and skidding buses being excised for some goddawful white girl
rapping about much she wants to shag some horrid pubescent weedy Tiger Beat
clone with unfortunate 'kewl' hair. At least she has an excuse I suppose,
whereas Madonna is old enough to know better).

All this AND Todd Rundgren! I think Mandy has a severe case of Desperately
Seeking Credibility happening. On the plus side, the number of units
shifted for this forthcoming album might make Andy a *very* rich man. In
which case: new album please!

Last night I watched Third Eye Blind portray the Kinks
on the TV show "American Dreams". I thought the show
was pretty bad, and the band was OK. I wish this show
had been around back in the days of the Dukes. They
could have really done something fun.

My favorite quote from the Mandy Moore site:

"I can't tell you how sincere I am about that."

Um, OK Mandy. Whatever you say. Or don't say.

re: MANDY MOORE
Hard to screw up a great song. I wonder why more people haven't mined the
XTC vein of brilliant songs. hmmmm. I'll have to think about that a while
longer. Maybe they're too hard to play? Too many notes?

re: THE ROMANTICS
LOL. I played in a band that opened up for the Romantics too. (1988, New
Jersey) I remember we had to share a dressing room and they were total
dicks. We also played with The Smithereens, Del Fuegos, Del Lords, The
Silos, Blues Travelers, Marshal Crenshaw . . . you get the picture. ahh, the
good old days.

re: NEW MUSIC
Speaking of the Del Fuegos . . . Warren Zanes, formerly of the Del Fuegos
has released a brilliant debut album called Memory Girls:
http://warrenzanes.com/ I'm serious!!! It's really, really good. Do yourself
a favor and pick it up. You won't regret it.
I like the new Pete Yorn too.

re: A NIGHT OF HEROES
About two weeks ago I saw the Funk Brothers at the Wiltern in Los Angeles.
If you don't know the Funk Brothers run out and rent the DVD documentary
'Standing In The Shadows of Motown'. The FB's were the brilliant Motown
session band. (only five left) Great show. Very inspirational . . . .so I'm
standing there watching the band when I look over to my right and the guy
next to me looks strangely familiar. I couldn't place him at first then it
hit me . . . that's the great Pete Thomas, drummer for Elvis Costello and
the Attractions. The show ends and the band has a meet & greet so I stand in
line to get my DVD autographed and Pete's standing next to me again. So i
use the occasion to strike up a conversation. What a nice guy. We talked
about 10 minutes on Motown, Los Angeles (He lives here), Elvis Costello, The
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The near-reunion of the Attractions (the bass
player is still pissed off & refuses to play with EC. I didn't ask him why
but I assume it's over money. Does anyone know the real reason?)

Now that was a good night on the town.

Dear fellow travellers of the old ways...

In homage to the natural rhythm of the world we are pleased to announce the
next outing for the X-sTatiC (the UKs tribute to Swindon's finest). Whilst
we know that you will of course be greeting the sun's first rays at
Stonehenge, it is our fervent hope that many may make the trip to...

The Dublin Castle, Camden on Saturday June 21st.

The Castle is a famous London venue, has appeared in Madness videos and was
a favourite haunt of Britpop- Blur, Supergrass etc have trodden its famous
stage. In keeping with the previous trips, space, whilst larger than the
Hope, or Riff's, is once again the final frontier, so be there early to
avoid frustration.

To date we've not tackled anything from Nonsuch, Mummer, Apple Venus or the
Dukes. We aim to correct this ommission this time around.

As ever details and flyers (an essential part of us getting any cash to fund
our rehearsals!) can be found at www.x-static.org

As ever, your pagan pals

Mick, Ed, Dan & Adrian

"UK television station Channel 4 has hit back at claims that a logo

The "eye" logo, about 300ft wide, was painted on to the site near Uffington,

I know it might be "old" news to some of us, but I feel it my duty to inform
the assembled here on the 'Hill (every man-jack of us music lovers, natch)
of the sad news of the passing of a major force in modern music.

SClub have decided to call it a day. Here's the proof in red-hot html:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/2965273.stm

I know this is going to come as a crushing blow for some of you, indeed I am
wiping away a tear as I type this, but after writing and recording so many
hit songs, releasing so many top quality albums, touring so hard - not to
mention the many hours of fine television they have given us, don't you
think they deserve a rest?

However, every cloud has a silver lining; not only have Jo (who's got the
flow, if you recall) and Rachel expressed an interest in pursuing solo
careers, lovely Tina has stated that she'd "like to have a go at music"
(that will be a new experience for her, then). I'm sure you'll also be
delighted to know that SClub Juniors have gained promotion and are now to be
called SClub8 (or is it 9? I keep losing count, there's so many of the
little ankle biters on stage at any given time) and are determined to keep
the SClub name alive.

If you've never heard of any of these people, then either ask a passing 7
year old or completely disregard this message. It's up to you.

Xtc content: With this Mandy Moore/Senses Working Overtime cover version
hoo-ha in mind - which of today's crop of fresh faced, spiky haired,
headset-miked pop puppets would you like to see record an Xtc song, and
which song do you think they would do justice to?

My vote? Justin Timberlake dropping urban r'n'b beats on Roads Girdle the
Globe.

I think I need help....

Gang,

So I'm off on a road trip this weekend with one of my students. We're
going down to Philadelphia, which is, at best, a five-hour trek from my
school in Connecticut. Being the competent planner that I am, however,
I have packed the Jetta's six-CD changer with the best and brightest:
"White Music," "Drums and Wires," "Black Sea," "English Settlement,"
"Oranges and Lemons," and "Nonsuch." On the ride there, we'll have an
XTC informational session. On the ride back, it'll be time for some
XTC-related bands (Martin Newell, Jellyfish, etc). While in Philly,
we'll be at the Pete Yorn concert. (Although I don't know whether or
not Pete likes XTC, he does like Peter Buck; that's enough for me.)

I can't tell you all how excited I am that, after months of an XTC dry
spell, I'm back in the proverbial saddle. I'm actually looking forward
to the drive down so that I can listen to these albums -- the same
albums that I've been listening to for ten years, non-stop. Isn't it
nice to re-discover something so meaningful? I think so.

Cheers,
-Ben
