Two Chalkhillians (that I know of, anyway), also contribute: Mitch Friedman
weighs in with a hilarious, Sinatra-inspired cover of "She's Checking You
Out," which I've heard and loved; and uber-play-at-home musician R. Stevie
Moore contributes a version of "I Wasn't Drinking I Was Just Tired" (which
I haven't heard, but bet I'd love).

Just a quick note from a lurker (determined to come out of lurkdom one of
these days), to firstly say THANKS to Mole for the VERY COOL item you sent
me!

Secondly, I picked up both Warbles at my local record shop in Greenville SC
(who'da thunk it?) and enjoy them immensely. Already had some of the stuff
thanks to Mr. Long and the aforementioned Mole, but good to support Andy +
lots of stuff I didn't have. Life is good, in the greenhouse or out!

Thirdly, I used "Dear God" many times in my tenure as a Sunday School
Teacher of 11th/12th graders. The controversial nature of the song always
made for good discussion. Fwiw, I also played "Paper & Iron", "Funk Pop A
Roll", "Human Alchemy" to lead my group in discussions of money, music, and
racism. (Plus of course to subliminally expose their young & impressionable
ears to XTC music).

That's all for now - hopefully I'll do a better of job of contributing to
this great forum in digests to come.

Pledge brought up the Spree...

A friend made me a copy of the Polyphonic Spree's
latest album and I got off on it. My first thought was
that Partsy would really dig this band. I call him up
the next day and find that he's aware of the Spree -
he'd seen them only the night before, doing a live
tune on TV... and his reaction was a cross between the
following words: yack & yawn.

Now - he's not heard any of the studio work, and I
plan on sending him a copy of the album. I really
think he'd like it - how could he not? Pledge's
description of the band is accurate - they've got a
Beatle/Beach Boys thing going on... in the ball-park
of what Flaming Lips and Super Furry Animals are
doing, but much more dense, and orchestrated... and
best of all, no samples - these cats are actually
playing the music. That's unheard of.

For those of you unaware about the band... in addition
to running 23 - 27 folks large, they all garb
themselves in flower-power cultish white robes. I
believe it's this schtik that initially turned Andy
off. In his words - as I recall them - "I'd like to be
there when they hand out the royalties. That's a half
cent for you... and a half cent for you... and a...

Also of note - there is a chance that Ben Folds and
Andy will write together. I asked if he'd heard any of
Ben's material - and he said that his daughter (Holly)
had a copy of the Ben Folds solo album from a few
years back... said he liked what he heard. I'm a
pretty big fan of Ben and the Ben Folds Five material,
so I find this pretty exciting. Ben has the whole
bouncy piano thang going on - so it would be an
interesting concoction.

Hi Chalkies

Good news for anyone who has not yet got a copy of either Apple Venus, Wasp
Star or Homespun. They are all being reissued at a special bargain price at
the start of March, I can't vouch for any other dealers but I'll be shoving
them out the door at #5.50 for CDs and #6 for LPs (including postage) in the
good ole UK, add on a quid if you're anywhere else . If you want more blurb
email me on jamie@gasbanana.com. My two pence is that WS is the better of
the 2 but hey at this price buy all 3 and make your own mind up...

They play around LA quite often (usually at Spaceland if I remember
correctly). In fact recently they did a show that featured Madonna songs.
They're billed as The Cover Problem lol.

Sorry, no XTC content.

Dave Gregory is on Apple Venus
- piano, keyboards, guitar and backing vocals

Not to single a song from Apple Venus out, but you should give "I'd
Like That" your full attention. Its a very well crafted song,
complete with, for just one example, sweetly placed ecstatic guitar
feedback; listen again... it's an incredible song!

Hey guys,

I have just undergone a hunt for some XTC bass tabs and am having a horrible
time. If anyone out there has the bass tabs for "Science Friction" or "Funk
Pop a Roll" I would be eternally greatful. (XTC bass tabs are pretty
difficult to come by, these days.)

Chalkholders:

I did a search for XTC cell phone ring tones at www.RingtoneDJ.com looking
for an XTC tune but came up empty handed. So I sent off a missive to them
asking them to add some Swindonian music and they replied:

"Thanks for the request. We are very familiar with XTC and would like to see
some of their content featured also. I will put in a request, but seeing as
it is on a song by song basis, is there one or two in particular that you
would like to see added? I will ask for that one or two specifically, if you
want to let me know. If not I will put in a general request".

Here are a couple of ideas I have: Wake Up, Bought Myself a Liarbird, Senses
Working Overtime, Wait till Your Boat goes Down, She's a Little Light House,
Then She appeared. However, if you all have any ideas of your own that
might make a really good XTC ring-tone your contribution is welcome.

Cheers,

Jamie (I have to take this call) Lowe

I'm sure you've all spotted Mr Partridge's miniature contribution in the
very funny remix of S-E-X-X-Y just posted on www.theymightbegiants.com.
It made me laugh anyway.

Oi Oi!

Just a quickie...matron...on the subject of what I
should be planning to warp the impressionable mind of
my forthcoming Mini-Me (or our forthcoming Mini-We, if
I'm being inclusive) with. Clearly XTC would be a
splendid choice, and I'll bear those Swans nominations
in mind...actually, I can imagine a tiny tot drifting
into slumber to the cranked up sounds of
'Cop'...possibly...anyway, since so many of you have
proved to be fertile (a ghastly thought, but
congratulations all the same) I was wondering if you
could enlighten me as to whether there is any truth in
the rumour that loud, aggressive music is likely to
scare the merry arse out of the average newborn. I
have a friend who claims to be introducing his
week-old son to the delights of Iron Maiden and
Slayer, and obviously I would like to follow suit, but
common sense tells me that blasting Possessed's 'Seven
Churches' at a newborn is likely to result in much
shrieking and shitting of pants. And not just from me.

Your advice, sagacious coves, your advice...

Salut!
